92  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Ft 817ND Mobile ? on: December 07, 2011, 07:38:01 AM
Would it be safe - Yes with FT817 should be fine - I have run many radios through Cig/Aux plugs - no issues.
Best bet - Keep it under 50 watts.  73 K1WJ David
93  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Antenna height on: December 07, 2011, 07:32:50 AM
For 10m/11m - the base of antenna at 16ft minimum will work fine.

Shoot for a 1/2 wave minimum height - 35ft - even better in most cases. Should work great.

11 radials must be fixed to antenna design? Not sure if true 1/4 wave radials?

Hook up the 2m radio to your Power supply - no reason to buy another.
And you can have the FT-950 on at the same time - just do not xmit both radio's at the same time.

In the past, a 75 meter dipole - 119 feet total. Apex 33 feet - ends 10ft up.   73 David K1WJ

I would say the chances are slim a 200mi line of site contact with 2- 5watt HTs will make it. 73 K1WJ
98  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Simple HOA Antenna on: November 17, 2011, 07:18:06 AM
I recently moved to a Arizona HOA - Before I lived in NH & MI - lots of room for full size antennas - and had many.

We have a back yard with a 6-7ft block wall around it.

I took a 20m MFJ hamstick & mounted it on Bucket filled with 25lbs of cement & wood to attach to.

The base of the antenna is 2ft off the ground with a single 1/4wave counterpoise wire also 2ft off the ground held on end by camera tripod.

Made one for 10m & 20M in single bucket - see pic on ORZ on right ( click on, gets bigger) - my call K1WJ. Check it out.

Both have at least 100khz of bandwidth - low cost - low visability - Simple.

Have made Hundreds of contacts on 10m/20m with these low profile antennas - Band conditions dictate success primarily.

See other antennas like the Transworld 2010 or whatever - costing like $300 - My 10m/20m 2 antenna system cost about - $70.

I was in the back yard looking at antennas the other day - & said to myself " wow I worked Japan & Russia last Saturday on that, amazing"

Was worried about HOA - Not any longer - make contacts - Everyday.  73 K1WJ David  Cool

99  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Increasing 80 meter effiency of 5btv with a 40 meter ham stick?? on: November 08, 2011, 07:36:54 AM
This is what I did with my 4BTV:

For 75M: Took a 60ft piece of wire #14 (1/4 wave) for 75M+-, with metal hose clamp

On wire: one end took off about 1in of insulation - other end put on plastic insulator

Attached open wire end & metal hose clamp just below 1st trap (10M) - only about 6ft up+-

then went out and attached insulator side to rope tied to tree at 6-8ft up.

Then trimmed a few feet for 3.930 - SWR 1.5:1

Worked good on 75M - 100 khz bandwidth - good for local 20-500 mile range.

On 75 Meters - good to go. Easy.  73 K1WJ David
100  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Looking for backcountry high power antenna to get signal up and over mountains on: October 27, 2011, 08:46:42 AM
Sounds like you should try the Smiley 270A - 2m/22/440 HT antenna.

Will give about 2 s-unit gain over stock duck. Check out reviews here on e-ham.

Installed one of these babies on my VX-3R = Love it.

101  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Small Multiband HF Vertical on: October 21, 2011, 03:57:49 PM
Check out the Hy-Gain AV-12AVQ 10-15 & 20 meter Vertical.

It is only 13.5 ft tall - Gound mount it - follow instructions supplied with antenna to install.

16 ground radials would be a decent set up - but put as many or as few as you can.

HRO is a great place to buy one, I think about $130. It will get you on 3 bands - works well.

Catch you on the AIR WAVES..........73 K1WJ David Cool
102  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Magnum257HP on: October 15, 2011, 05:53:49 PM
"10M is so junked up with splatter" - Really? Huh

Was on 10m today did not hear any.....heard about 10-12 different stations - no issues

10m all messed up......yeah right  Huh - most of the time hear nothing - with a Ton of band spectrum free as can be.

This Radio is Not the problem - yeah right - blame the gun -not the moronic operator....

If you were stranded & needed to communicate  Shocked - the tiddlywinks Magnum would function just fine.

It is a cheap 10m radio that works -----Who Cares?   Dave K1WJ 73

The Magnum 257HP is a cheap 10m radio - what's the big deal? - for $200 bucks - who cares?

It works just fine I'm sure for 10m no problem - because the radio is easy to mod. for 11m, who cares? 11m is a wasteland anyways.

104  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Could one use a CB antenna for the 10 meter band? on: October 04, 2011, 08:08:08 AM
I'm using a 11m Truckspec Mobile antenna cut down 3inches to use on 10m - works good.

See K1WJ on QRZ to see set up - ground mounted with single 1/4wave counterpoise 2ft off the ground.

Plenty of contacts - 10m is open half way decent now.......73 K1WJ - ARIZONA Cool
105  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: How likely is it that I can use an HF rig out in the field without a tuner... on: October 04, 2011, 08:02:20 AM
I have always been able to tune my antennas to obtain good swr in the field for what ever band I am working -
No Tuner needed - ever. Dave K1WJ Cool
