2  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 3D2C SIGNALS so far.......... on: October 03, 2012, 08:39:33 PM
I must have really lucked out then. I just happened to turn on the mobile rig 2 nights ago and heard them calling CQ on 17, got them on my first call.

I have to admit I had no idea who or where they were, I dont keep up with it.

Dumb luck I guess.

Used an FT-100 to an ATAS-100
3  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Odd fluttering noise? on: March 15, 2012, 03:00:45 PM
Thanks for the link, I listened to the sounds and none of them are what I am experiencing. My issue is more of something that is noticed on a received signal, the audio has a fluttering or buffeting quality if that makes any sense.  It is not present when at rest but only happens when I begin moving.
4  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Odd fluttering noise? on: March 15, 2012, 07:22:46 AM
Not sure how else to describe it and hope someone can help.

My mobile HF is working great, but recently I noticed that when I start off from a stop I hear what can only be describe as a "fluttering" on my received audio. Not sure if it is on the TX audio. Seems to lessen and go away as I get up to speed.   Any ideas?

Running a Yaesu ATAS100 mounted on an "L" shaped plate screwed to the back of my tool box in the bed of my truck. Rig is a Yaesu FT-100, powered directly off the battery and grounded through the floor of the truck.

I have had excellent signals all evening from pirate station X-FM on 6.940 AM

Mostly classic rock, very high quality.
7  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: What's your longest mobile contact? on: December 29, 2011, 08:36:15 PM
Back in the late 90's I was headed to Ft hood Texas from Abilene, running my FT-726 mobile with mag-mounts on 2 and 6 meters. Listening to a dead band on 6 and all of the sudden I heard Arnie Coro, calling CQ on 6. If you aren't familiar with Arnie, he has been a fixture on Radio Havana Cuba for years with SWL and Ham Radio programs.  so it was a good contact for a minimal station, and a thrill for a former SWL turned Ham to speak to Arnie Coro!

Uniden BC785D
Uniden BC780XLT
Radio Shack Pro-2045
Radio Shack Pro-97

I am primarily a milair monitor, I enjoy the B-1's and C-130's here at Dyess as well as the F-16's that train south of here.
I also keep up with most of the public safety stuff in this area.
9  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: FM Dual Banders With AM Airband RX Coverage on: December 19, 2011, 04:45:10 PM
If you want the 225-380 MHZ air band as well, many radios that advertise coverage there fall horribly short in performance, the VX3R is just one of many.

My favorite is the FT-60, very sensitive across the entire range.
10  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: What was your first shortwave radio? on: December 19, 2011, 04:38:41 PM
Mine was the Radio Shack kit, the little red and clear plastic bread-bord style kit they sold, back around 1978 or so. I had been coveting my Uncle's SX-100 and feeling pity he gave me an old Halllicrafters S-41G that was rescued from the junk. I used that S-41G untill I left for basic training in 1981, and yes, I did end up in the signal corps!
11  eHam Forums / MARS / RE: Amature radio in the military on: December 10, 2011, 03:13:05 PM
I got my ticket while I was stationed at Ft Sill, OK back in 1989. I lived off post so my ham station was of no interest or concern to my commander.

I did however make my very first contact from my AN/GRC-122A Radio Teletype rig in the motor pool. Fired up the AN/GRC-106, threw the 15 foot whip in the air, strapped on the leg key and worked a station in Windsor Locks, CT on 15 meter CW.  It made for an interesting QSO for sure!
12  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: HT with wide RX? on: December 02, 2010, 06:47:56 PM
I purchased a VX-3R this week and I love the radio except for one thing, it is stone deaf in a portion of the UHF air band so I will be putting it up for sale.
Guess I will try the Kenwood TH-F6A next.

I have always gone for the old Drake Twins as they can be crystaled for any band.

14  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: HT with wide RX? on: November 02, 2010, 07:39:34 AM
I had one of those years ago and loved the RX.
It would be nice to have a little more TX power but I could end up with one again.
I have a nice Kenwood TH-D7A/G that I am going to sell or trade.
Thanks and 73,
Ed
15  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / HT with wide RX? on: October 31, 2010, 05:54:01 AM
I want a different HT and I would like it to have wide RX coverage. I would like it to have good performance in the 225-400 mhz AM range.
Can anyone recomend one? I am more interested in your own experience not just advertised specs.
I dont care if it is a model in current production or 10 years old.
Thanks,
Ed
