16  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Value of restored antique equipment on: December 01, 2011, 07:19:06 PM
I watch the antiques road show on PBS at times they say to have it professionally repaired and it will increase the value, of course original mint is always best. Radio may be a little different I have seen some really nice Johnson Rangers restored in and out that looked good and worked as they should. But for me on a Viking Vallant it must have the blue 866A rectifiers. It’s just not the same without them.
17  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / conversion from 3-500z to GI-46b on: November 28, 2011, 04:52:14 PM
Looking for schematics for a conversion from 3-500z tubes to the GI-46B I saw videos on you tube and thought it might be fun to do it to a SB-220.
There were only videos, and I cannot find any paper work on the conversion.
18  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Alpha 87A and K0BG's rules of buying an amp on: November 24, 2011, 05:00:06 PM
There is an Alpha 77sx on e-Bay now for $8900. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would buy a used amplifier for that when you could buy a new Quality amp like a QRO or even a new current production Alpha for less.  As far as your question Yes I would have a hands on for that kind of money.
19  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Change doorknob value on: November 21, 2011, 09:16:45 PM
What would happen if you change the value of the capacitance of the 6 kv ceramic doorknob capacitors in the tank from .001 up or down.
This would be on a SB-220.
20  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: freebanders on: November 20, 2011, 03:15:46 PM
If the highway patrol has no problem enforcing speed limits the FCC should no more difficult time enforcing the CB band.

The FCC could do raids at truck stops and residential areas, and that would slow it down a lot. By the time a few dozen
trucks get in pounded company’s would make dammed sure there trucks  that had personal CB in them were legal and
of course the driver would be fired on the spot, plus any fines imposed by the FCC on the driver and possible the company.

Residential raids; confiscate all equipment hefty fines and even property seizer just like they would do in a drug raid.

After a few months of that 90% of truck drivers would have thrown their old illegal ring in the trash and have a nice new legal radio. The same could be said of residential base stations.  Once word got out that several had lost their home to the Feds they would have gotten new clean radios too.

There will always be some idiot that thinks they won’t get caught.
21  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: tube watts louder than transistor watts ??? on: November 16, 2011, 01:44:50 PM
I would think 100 watts produced by tube would be the same as 100 watts produced by transistor. No difference. 100 watts is a 100 watts.
22  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Parasitic suppressors on: November 16, 2011, 01:42:18 PM
i have not had a responce on QRZ so i will ask here.

Parasitic suppressors; why are they all not the same for the 3-500z amplifiers. Or does it matter.
Could suppressors from a Kenwood TL-922a work in a Heathkit sb-220 or a QRO work in a Kenwood
I would think they are all the same. If not tell me why?
23  eHam Forums / Youth / RE: Your story: How did you get into Amateur Radio? on: November 12, 2011, 09:11:15 PM
I had an interest in radio since I was about 8 years old “1964”. I knew nothing about amateur radio at the time.

I would DX AM broadcast stations at night from all over the country. I thought it was so cool to listen to radio stations half way across the country. Later I got some walkie talkies for Christmas. It must have been at a solar peak, we herd CB’ers talking all over the country. I remember a guy specifically called Arkansas Fats. By the time I was 13 I would DX shortwave. By 14/15 “Summer 1972” a friend and I saved up $79.95 and each of us bought a Midland 13.874 “8” channel CB base unit.  What a bummer only CH 14 & CH 9 couldent talk on 9 so that gave us only 1 channel. One evening while on ch 14 I said lets reverse the CH 9 crystals in the transmit and receive, and it worked. (First experiment).
A year later I worked up to a Midland 13-880B SSB rig with a 100 watt amplifier, and the best ground plain antenna offerd by Radio Shack.

Big time CB with Ham Equipment.

From their I got a Johnson Viking Valliant for $105, a Lafayette HB-800 receiver and Dow-Key relay.   This is about 1974.
( I had a complete ham station and used it on CB, I knew of no hams to guide me in the right direction). From 1976 to 1983 I was completely out of radio.

I am now a Novice Amateur Radio Operator. (1983)

I saw a Tri-Band antenna at a house about 2 miles from me. I stopped by and he showed me his shack. Mr. Vest WD5GMA /sk became my Elmer. I was a Novice for about a year and upgraded to the Technician. A few years later passed my 13 WPM got the General. “1992”. In January 2010 I earned my Amateur Extra.

Summary:

I was a CB’er from the 70”s. and many Hams got their start the same way; that were from the 70’s era. The 1970’s ere CB’ers were unique and in a time of great radio growth. Never to be equaled again. Many of us eventually got our ham license and left CB to the dogs.
Today we respect our license and comply to the laws and regulations 100%. I am being 100% honest on how I got my start, not many will.

But I can assure you at least 80% of hams from the 70’s ran radios with extra channels and amplifiers. But they wanted more and earned their ham radio license.
24  eHam Forums / Youth / RE: Youngest ham? on: November 12, 2011, 08:02:32 PM
I remember in the ARRL handbook 1984 or so of a 4 or 5 year old as being the youngest ham. I also remember looking him up years ago on QRZ and he was a young adult, and was only a technician.
I supposed his dad pushed him to get his license, just for the prize “for dad”. But evidently he had no interest in amateur radio.
25  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: G*dang UPS - My new rig destroyed before I ever get it on: November 12, 2011, 05:10:56 AM
Mistake by UPS; I bought an amplifier from a non-ham and they shipped it with tubes still in the amp. When it arrived tubs were just fine nothing broke or banged up.

I am sure it was a mistake to get it in perfect condition. It won’t happen again
26  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: RM Italy Amplifiers on: November 10, 2011, 08:38:00 PM
Would it not be better for RM Italy to make and meet FCC requirements and be approved? Then they could legally enter the amateur market.
27  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: If two 3-500zs are good in a SB-220, six must be better! on: November 07, 2011, 06:06:54 PM
Not having to use any external heat for the shack. You may even need to crack the windows some if it is 40+ outside.
28  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: If two 3-500zs are good in a SB-220, six must be better! on: November 06, 2011, 01:46:43 AM
I think it could be a good buy 5 tubes @ $200 each = $1000. Heavy duty P/S, $1000, buy it, and make a real amp out of it. A 3 tube 3-500z with a tank for 10-160M
What you get is a full legal output amplifier and 2 spare tubes.
29  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: The "JUNKER" AMPLIFIER on: November 02, 2011, 03:32:03 PM
Yes there is fun in building or rebuilding: I am currently rebuilding an SB-220, 75% of everything in the rebuild will be new; I even found a new never used face plate.  Just for fun, and the learning experience.
30  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: 6 or 8 tube 572b amp ? on: October 30, 2011, 06:41:21 PM
Well, I was just wondering why. Now I know
Thanks
