eHam Forums / Elmers / Base Use of a Mobile Antenna

Hi all. I have a 10 Meter Hamstick, and I'd like to concoct some sort of stand that I can use to mount the antenna outside on a patio or in the yard for temporary QSO's.
I was thinking something along the lines of a old CB antenna mirror bracket, with a wire hanging down from the grounded part, used as a counterpoise. Would this work?
What do you guys reccomend? Thanks!

Hi all. I have a Yaesu VX5R on the way right now.. Can i do sat. work with this ht? What do I need? How do you do sat work? I have read abut the doppler shift to do a QSO, and this seems confusing. Would it be better to put a load of shifted freqs. into the memory, or just do the contact in VFO mode? Since this is repeater, I assume I'll have to enter them all into memory. Where can I find the freqs.? What else do I need to know?
Many thanks and 73.

Back in my early ham days, I had a old hy-gain 1/4 wave magnet mount antenna on the cab of my truck. Worked just fine for repeaters. Best I got was a machine that was about 40 miles away on 2 meters. wasn't a bad set up at all. Looked a lil' gawky, but who cares what it looks like, long as it talks good!

eHam Forums / Elmers / Multiple antennas and SWR?

Ok, here's the deal. I have a 3' magnet mt. CB whip on my truck cab.
I want to put me a 1/2 or 1/4 wave 2M ham antenna up there with it.
Is it going to be possible to keep both antennas' SWR within a good performance range?
If not, what alternatives do I have so I can Ham and CB at the same time without affecting either radio's SWR?
Email if ya want. Thanks well in advance.

Yes, there is a huge price difference. I also am yet to understand why. I've seen mods posted before that will allow you to extend your transmit and transmit on police freq. (Heavens no) I don't see what the big deal is. You can buy a dandy HT for 120-150 bucks, and police radio's cost upwards of 250. A mystery indeed..........................

I'm faced with the same problem you are. You can stil use a mag. mount antenna w/o scratching it. All you do is cut out a slab of a plastic kroger bag, and sandwich it between your antenna magnet, and the roof. It works great for me.

I have a magnet mount 1/4 wavelength 2 meter antenna. It has a PL-259 plug, which I want to change to a BNC plug. Would it be ok to cut the plug completely off, and go out and buy a BNC plug and put on the end of the coax? Anyway I can prevent RF leakage? Any tips? Thanks in advance.
