Here's a link to the conversation with Flex on the subject.

Not so for the SDR-1000.

That's what I was thinking, but Flex makes it sound as though the FCC is going to come after them for "unlocking" my radio.   Flex finally said they would accept a letter on letterhead.  MARs said that was "not authorized." , and I should wait to receive a letter from the chief, which he apparently is not in a hurry to write.   I don't know, its all starting to seem like too much trouble, and I refuse to go buy another rig just for MARS usage.  I'm digging around in the source code now to see if I can find it.  I've heard its pretty well defined...

So I joined Army MARS recently, and received all my training materials.  When I received my call sign, I emailed flex for a MARS mod for my rig, an SDR-1000.  They said "we need a copy of your license".  So I ask, and am told trainees will not receive a copy of their ticket until the training program is completed.  Well, I can't complete training if I can't TX...   Sent flex a copy of the updated roster, which lists me, they said thats not good enough, we need your license.   I need one of those little emoticons that's bashing his head against a brick wall.  Jesus man if I was a CBer, I'd just buy a flea market CB and a hundred watt amp from the truck stop before I'd go to all this trouble...

So why did you bring up the comparison then?

Gene

You still don't  get it,  do you.  I compared the owners, not the objects...  I can see you are very passionate about your radio.  So much so that it's causing you not to "hear" what you read.  So I'm going to concede here.   Don't use me for an example, though.  I own an SDR-1000 and I'm not mad at anybody.  I bought it used, this past year.  Traded an IC-746 for it, in fact.  Haven't regretted it it for a minute.

Comparing an old consumer computer to a old car is comparing apples to oranges and is nonsense.

Gene

You're absolutely right, Gene.  Which is why I wasn't comparing the two at all.  I was speaking of the mindset that a company is obligated to support everything they ever build / sell forever.  When the new comes available, the old has to give way.  That's the nature of things.   My point was, if you have a nice radio, it's still a nice radio, it doesn't become any less nice or stop doing the things it did before the new one came out.

I've grown kind of tired of that excuse.  It's a grasp at a straw that's really not there.  It is not that hard to keep a PC in good health and running for many, many years.  I run my SDR-1000 on a windows xp machine I built in 2007, and that radio will flat run circles around any rig you put it next to, past or present, and I've tried a ton.  If you "need" to upgrade to a new OS, then you're going to likely need a new PC anyway to run it.  So wheres the "extra" expense?  What's wrong with keeping the one the rig is connected to and just considering it part of the rig?    If it works now, and you treat it nice, it will still work in its current configuration years from now.   Tell you what.  If you ever see a guy driving a 67 Chevelle SS396, ask him if he's mad because GM doesn't build or support them anymore.  He'll likely laugh, and with his right foot, show you why he could care less if GM closed their doors for good.

Not really. Even if there's never another update for PSDR from Flex, my Flex 1500 will carry on working just as well (and the best update for it lately hasn't been from Flex at all, but from DH1TW), and I'll carry on enjoying it just as much.

Until you reach the point where you have to upgrade your OS or get a new computer with a new OS and your Flex hardware no longer works with the new OS.  This happened with the Flex SDR-1000 and Windows 7 64 bit.   I have a Yaesu rig that is almost 40 years old and it is still usable and it works when I turn it on.  I bet you'll only find a computer that will work with your Flex-1500 in some museum 40 years from now.

People buy SDRs with the expectation that the software will be kept up to date.  Either Flex will start charging for upgrades of PowerSDR beyond version 2.0 or PowerSDR development will languish in favor of their new 6000 series software (SmartSDR) with its pay to play model.

~ $700.

I wish I would...

You can get a whole 100 watt HF rig for that that's only a couple of years old!

I like the 300 too, but its way to overpriced to be used as a 100 watt amp, IMO.

There you go...  I say RMitaly and you say cheap CB amp.  I've never seen a band switched cheap cb amp.  Why would a company that already has a monoband amp with the same advertised specs waste money building one with filtering and band switching that costs 2.5 time as much as the one they already sell?  You know, chevrolet built the vega, but they also build the Corvette.
11  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Flex 1500 Amplifier Recommendations ? on: May 18, 2012, 05:55:43 PM
I like the HLA-150 by rmitaly, as long as you realize that the "150“ doesn't mean 150 watts output, no matter what the specs say.  You can cleanly get about 90 out.  It's band switched, and filtered, but, I'm not sure if it ever got FCC approval in the US, just because it's RM Italy...
12  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / Need help remoting on: May 18, 2012, 04:32:07 PM
Hello.  I'm migrating to my flex SDR-100 from my 746, and I'm loving it.   I've gotten my audio right, and now I want my remote capabilities again.  So, here's the setup.  I have an SDR-1000, PowerSDR 2.3.5, windows xp, Roland FA-66. My motherboard has an onboard sound card as well.  I just need help getting the audio settings configured so I can work remote.  I use pocket cloud for the desktop control, and Skype for the audio.  I also want to get DM780 back in the mix, but I bet if I can get the remote audio going, I can get DM780 talking too.  Any help would be appreciated.  I posted in the flex group, but they're all too busy arguing over the new 6000 series to notice anything else.

Thanks,
Randy

I have it receiving now, but I don't seem to have control over it. I can hear signals, but I can't tune.

Haha!  Sorry!  I was chasing a 3 year old!  Anyway,  it's an rx ensemble II, tried all kinds of software, widows XP, emu-0202 card.  Same thing happens on all, i press start, and nothing happens.  Well, the radio "starts" but theres no sound or display.  I used this setup. With an if lite kit on a ts-850 no sweat.  The kit was assembled by tony, kb9yig, and arrived today.
