LED's are supposed to last several thousands of hours installed in a properly designed circuit. That's why they replaced the old wheat lamps on most all modern radio displays and why they are being touted for replacing incandescent bulbs in the home. They are energy efficient and long lasting. Besides, I do not use it much at work anyway but it's handy when I DO use it.
I appreciate KE3WD's idea, however, the radio is under warranty and I do not want to open the case and void the warranty, therefore I cannot perform tests. I was trying to furnish something of better quality to the tech that would be an easy drop in replacement so he wouldn't have to do much fiddling around.
Sending the tech your own selected LED would also very likely be a warranty-voiding situation if the tech were to install same. And assuming that the problem lies in the LED itself does not take into account another possibility -- it very well could be that there is the wrong value dropping resistor in the radio, which would be the real reason the factory LED's are being destroyed. Why not just return the radio for repair and indicate, in writing with the rig, your request to check out and change that dropping resistor as well? A reasonable request considering the repeat callback on the repair. 73

A Low Impedance mic can drive a High Impedance input.
This is simple Ohm's law.
The High Impedance input cannot load down the Low Impedance source.
In some instances, you may experience less gain. This is often overcome by a built in mic preamp and even if the preamp is Low Impedance output, it can still safely drive the High Impedance input.
The reverse is not the case, a High Impedance mic cannot safely drive a Low Impedance input simply because the input will load down the mic too much. Again, simple Ohm's law.
Hams have to understand the differences that happen at AF and that they are not the same as the RF situation where impedences have to be matched.

If you going to buy your own LED, the volt drop for the one the mfr used isn't an important issue at all.
Take a look at the connect points for the original LED, find the dropping resistor, which should be close by and connected to the positive lead via a trace.
Measure the resistance of that dropping resistor.
Might also be a good idea to power on and measure the voltage from top end of that resistor to chassis ground.
Ohm's law and the specsheet for the new LED can be used to calculate the proper dropping resistor to install - or it might end up to be the same as the one already in there. If you don't know how to calculate the value, Bing search can bring up endless howto webpages on that subject.

The + report, +10, +20 or whatever, may not be a requirement, but neither is any signal report at all a requirement anyway, but I always felt that telling a ham that their sig was "20 over" would leave 'em with the same good feeling such reports used to give me when received.

International Crystal (Do a Bing for 'em)
They keep a huge database by brand and model, a phone call can likely get the right crystals, brand new, immediately.

Constructing an Ugly Balun coax coil at feedpoint works just fine on the G5RV.

Look on the switch itself for a manufacturer's part number. Then source the manufacturer (NOT Kenwood) for possible replacement.
Given the era of the '940 and the manufacturer of same, it is very likely that the power switch was supplied by a japanese company called, "ALPS" - Bing should be able to bring up Alps corp., but a Bing of the part number on the switch itself may bring up more definitive information.
ALPS replacement switches are carried by quite a few electronics catalog houses, DigiKey, Mouser, etc. as well as MCM Electronics, all of which have online catalogs with Search Engines.
The key to the Search Engine is likely to go much better with the actual mfr and part number off of the switch itself rather than the Kenwood part number, which is "inhouse" reference and now, of course, no longer supported for most parts of a rig that age, but don't assume that to be the actual case until after contacting Kenwood Parts, as they might still have a switch in stock that fits the rig, you never know unless and until you try.

That may be true when morality predominates in a society. However, in the type of society we have today where its "every person for themselves", "free market" only benefits the very wealthy and the old axiom, "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" prevails. Tom
That requires us to believe that there was once a time when socialism worked for some society in the past. Care to NAME that particular society? Look, TANSTAAFL. Given the realistic parameters and choices, I have to prefer a system in which at least some of the poor have the chance to become rich as the only other alternatives in history have always ended up with the exact opposite of the wonderful scheme promised, with misery, near complete poverty and much loss of life being the realworld results. Study history. 73

Both of ya give the PC version from the way we learned it back in the fifities...
*grin*
It may have been UN P.C. -- but darn near every class member *remembered* the mnemonic from the first time it was heard!
And, at that time, I was the only black member of the class.
So what? The class was about Electronics, not social engineering...

Be advised that the authorities in Mexico are not going to be as lenient as authorities in the US would be about illegal/unlicensed transmissions in their country, made by foreigners.
You should do whatever it takes to find out exactly what Mexico's rules and regulations are for such transmissions, if there are restirictions as to what bands and frequencies Mexico allows for use in air/ground transmissions, if there are licensing needs, etc. before doing anything else.
Bing searches are a good start, not forums. Follow that up with written letters to Mexican radio regulation authorities. Find out from the source what's legal and what is not and govern your operations accordingly.
If you do not, you could very easily end up incarcerated in a foreign country with no recourse other than to serve the time handed to you.
