1  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Roh 25G short base drawing on: August 19, 2003, 09:40:58 AM
I need to get a copy of the rohn 25g short base section installation drawing.....can someone scan it and email it to me?

I have the old ham radio catalog, not the new consumer catalog.

Thanks

2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / check this out...rohn 25 on: August 14, 2003, 09:05:26 PM
It figures....  It looked as if one leg had been put in a jig wrong.  They must still be shipping it because the stock (at least at my local supplier) is not all that old.

I hope that the legs are not bent....I do not notice any bend just looking at it.

I guess I will find out when I get it up.

3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / check this out...rohn 25 on: August 12, 2003, 07:28:16 PM
I bought used rohn 25g last winter and am in the process of installing it now....just dug the hole today.

Last week I bought the short base section to submerge in concrete and another 10 foot section (so that I would have 58feet of tower with my old stuff).

When I went to join the base section to the new 10 foot section, the holes on one tube did not line up.   Not even close.  I fit the base section to several of my older tower pieces with no problem, so evidentally, Rohn made a mistake in manufacturing the 10 foot piece.

Anyone ever run across this?

The folks I bought it from are going to exchange it tomorrow, but they had never heard of such a problem.

Thought you might find this interesting.  (things like this happen to me!)

4  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Question about a Rohn drawing on: August 12, 2003, 07:22:12 PM
OK...thanks.  I wasn't sure what it meant....looked like a rotation symbol of some sort.

I understand the plans as to what is supposed to happen, so I wasn't worried about it.

5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Question about a Rohn drawing on: August 11, 2003, 08:45:53 PM
On the Rohn drawing for the 25G, it shows a symbol on both sides of the concrete drawing for a bracketed tower that has an "A" on both sides.  Center of gravity?

What is the significance of this?

Thanks

6  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Pouring concrete in clay on: August 11, 2003, 10:52:43 AM
I am planning on pouring concrete for my tower this week, maybe even tomorrow.  The area where I am putting the tower (Rohn 25G with a 3+ foot base section) is in clay (red, Georgia clay!).  It can be moist at times, but it seems solid.

Do I need to take anything extra into account?  All the Rohn drawings refer to normal soil, but I have clay.

Just curious.

7  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Icom 706MKII Mic Gain problems on: August 03, 2003, 10:39:51 AM
I think I am going to take my rig into the shop.  I have never had good results with my hand mic..and it should work fine.  I even have problems now with the PS85 switching power supply.  It is a shame because I have really babied all my gear.

I did a net the other night and my older FT 840 cleaned the clock off my 706mkii.

I will probably take it into the shop on Monday.

8  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Icom 706MKII Mic Gain problems on: July 29, 2003, 12:36:55 PM
I tried to run my session of the Maritime Net (14.300) last night on battery power with the 706 and the stock mic, and was getting terrible signals.  I switched radios to an FT 840 and all of a sudden, my signal reports went up dramatically.

It is not getting out like it should be.  I can't figure it.

I will check what you said with the ALC.  I appreciate the advice.

9  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Homebrew Mobile Antennas on: July 23, 2003, 10:51:45 PM
I emailed Don and he said that they do not sell the plans anymore.  Evidentally, people were marketing his plans as their own and not even giving him credit:

Greetings Mack, Since so many people have copied the antenna and started reselling them without Any mention about Don or giving credit to his design, he stopped making them available several years ago. The bootleggers that copied antenna design and now sell then under their own names now charge 3 times the price of the original. Don's W6AAQ still making the antennas at 86 years of age, and still sells them for $150 + shipping all the time. 73 Doug H. KC6FRY

I have been looking around at some of the mobile antennas and noticed that they are not cheap....
was wondering where I could find plans (or if it is feasible) to construct a good screwdriver antenna.

Where can I look?  I want to run hf mobile, but have never done it before...lots to learn.

thanks

11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Roof antenna and garage door height on: July 20, 2003, 08:54:21 PM
This post is several months old, so I don't know if you will read this, but I put a 1/2 wave 2 meter antenna on a remote controlled motor mount that I love.

I raise it every morning when I pull out of the garage and lower it when I go in the garage.

Works really well.  I paid about 100 bucks for the mount from HRO.

12  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HF rig & Dodge Dakota.... on: July 20, 2003, 08:17:44 PM
I am considering putting my 706 in a 92 Dodge Dakota too, so I will be following this thread.  I use the radio at home currently and it is a great little rig.  Driving over 2 hours each day, I am getting a little tired of the same 10 repeaters.

I will be curious if you eliminate the problem, or maybe if it is not a problem in an older truck.

I am also curious how you mounted your antenna.

No, I am not.  I get the same response whether I use the jack on the head or the back of the rig.

14  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Icom 706MKII Mic Gain problems on: July 17, 2003, 10:44:42 AM
I have an IC 706MKII that seems to have mic gain problems.

When I run the rig using a desk mic (Icom), it works just fine, and I get great signal reports.  When I compare that with the stock handmic, I get terrible reports, no matter what the gain setting. I even bought another hand mic (Icom with the DTMF) and it gets the same low signal reports.

The desk mic obviously has a preamp.  However, I should not be getting bad reports with the stock hand mic.  (It has been on the order of 3-4 s units lower).  I want to use this unit mobile, but there is no sense in doing this if it is not going to put out like it should.

I have heard about mods from taking the film of the back of the mic to changing a resistor.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

15  eHam Forums / Elmers / Jet Noise sounding interference on: July 17, 2003, 10:32:38 AM
OK...I found it.  It turned out to be a problem with my Icom Switching power supply for the 706.  I borrowed a power supply from another rig and the noise is gone.

So, I guess I have to take my power supply in for repair.

thanks for all the help!
