eHam Forums / Misc / QSL card question
|

Why use the publisher until you get the design that you like? The savings over printed QSLs is pretty good however buy some extra color ink catriges and good quality stock. If you check around the pricing gets good for quanity purchases.
While you are operating your rig you can be printing off what you need. You could even design a mail merge to fill out the card while you are talking to the station.
I used to be a GCI Controller and in the operation of heavy radar. That gives me a multitude of ideas for subject matter and I can almost personalize the card to the QSO. For instance I can use a picture of a radar site or Sage block house that use to be near the station I am working. For inbstance if I am working Fairbanks, Alaska, I'd use a picture of Murphy Dome Air force Station which is about 25 miles up the road.
You are only limited by your imagination. However if you use that new computerized system that ARRL is implementing you will have to conform to what they want. I doubt if I'll use it. I just enjoy opening the mail box and getting the hard copy wallpaper but to each his own on that matter.

Has there ever been studies showing how well digital communications perform in heavy QRN and/or QRM.
I would like to see the data and statistics as to capability, reliability, saturation points,in the use of mobile what is the burn through range, etc.

Look for the KWM2-A. That is the main change implemented by the A modification. It provided general coverage to the KWM2. It added the crystal sockets and modified the band selector switch. I used many of them on military HF nets.
I don't know of any modification kits available so I guess you'll just have to find a KWM2-A.

Bet you get the same reaction in Vegas too. with all those green stamps laying around, they get serious about security both for the green stamps and the scams in the casino. They bar card counters too when they catch them.

Who knows and who cares. If it was hacked they fixed it. Any site can get hacked. A few years ago th hackers nailed Mouser.com too. I know that because I was a buyer for a company and couldn't order from them via the internet until they fixed it.

eHam Forums / Misc / HAM RADIO'S RELATION TO MUSIC
|
on: July 19, 2003, 11:25:30 PM

I have two left feet and the only musical instrument that I can play is a stereo CD player. I have no musical ability whatsoever. I copy CW between 15 and 25 WPM depending on how I feel.
That said, that is the only way to learn the code and attain any speed. any other method is doomed to fail. Morse code is based on the rhythm or beat of the character. (When someone types code in a thread, i.e. --.- ... .-.. I have trouble with it because it isn't natural.) I have a feeling that is one of the reasons some many new hams are having trouble learning the code.
Most people remember a song by the beat or rhythm. It is the same way with the characters of the code. Each one has a different beat or rhythm. For instance the character Q is dahdahdidah, it almost sounds like pay day today. Try it. Work from thre simplest character to the longest character and build words along the way.
Also, buy a key and osscilator. Just because you don't have to send for the test, practice sending. It helps to make the code fun. Better yet practice with a friend.
You know, you just might have some fun.

eHam Forums / Misc / QSL card question
|
on: July 19, 2003, 11:04:47 PM

I agree with the other. It is best to keep QSLs to radio.
The one thing I thought I'd mention is the fact that I have created several QSL designs that can be printed on postcard stock that is available at most office supplies or through Avery. The software that I used was "Microsoft Publisher." Just print them on a color printer.
This could help you as you can design several cards for different people that may receive them. For instance, you may have one available to send to someone that you meet on a missionary net. That card may be different from the card that you may want to send to a ham in Saudi Arabia.

eHam Forums / Misc / Why is used gear so expensive?

KG4YBS,
If they are dumb enough to pay the seller's smart enough to take the profit.
Don't worry about why people do stupid things, just try to aviod being the one doing the stupid things.
If I knew that I could make the deal you described, I might buy a dozen to sell. With my luck I'd more than likely be stuck with a dozen radios who's value just dropped to half of what I'd paid for them. Hi Hi

I thought this one was dead by now but another in the mail box. The answer is simple but no one wants to accept it.
Everything sells for a price a ready, willing and able buyer is willing to pay to a seller.
Granted supply contributes but there is no scarcity (I am not refering to vintage radios) in most used equipment.
If everyone waited the price will come down. The problem is the people that can't wait or are willing to pay any price just to keep from waiting.
From the stuff I've seen on this subject, I think a course in Micro Economics should be added to the license requirements.

eHam Forums / Elmers / Why do so many hams prefer unhealthful food?

Do we still live in the good ole USA? Questions like this make me wonder!
What the hell does this have to do with ham radio!
You a member of the Pleasure Police or just normally stick your nose into other people's business?
If you don't like the Field Day food bring your own food, eat it, then keep your mouth shut about what others enjoy!
IT AIN'T NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS WHAT OTHERS EAT!
You go here to play radio; not run other folks lives!

It is basic economics. In a free market the price of anything is the greatest amount that buyers are willing to pay. If hams wouldn't buy it the price would go down. Don't blame the seller.
Have you offered what you are willing to pay?
Careful -- you might get it for that price! Maybe there were no better offers.
After making an offer you might also get a counter offer in return for your offer. Then you can accept the new price or counter offer back and negotiate to a price you are willing to pay.
You may also hurt the seller's feelings because you came in with a low offer. So what? It isn't your wife or girlfriend. They might get over it eventually.
One thing is sure; if you don't ask, you'll never know.

eHam Forums / Elmers / "GS's" illegal to send to which countrie
|

I can't tell you which countries they are but I can suggest that you try emailing to the Department of the Treasury and the Department of State. They should be able to give you definitive information. You might also try ARRL.
It will give you trouble if the country is on the list of countries under US sanctions. That is why the last thing I would do is trust one of the guard house lawyers around here for information like that. You may get good information but more than likely you will get wrong information or incomplete information. I also have been told that it may not be illegal for you to send the money here but it may be illegal for the receiving ham to get US cash. That would cause him trouble.
When it comes to my money and possibly violation of federal law, I want to be safe and sure not sorry.
I hope this helps.
