I would consider a WiNRADIO Excalibur, I have had a number of WiNRADIO receivers over the years and they are excellent! The Excalibur uses the newer direct-sampling technology and supports EIBI and HFCC databases. Although it still uses a USB interface the Client/Server software is excellent for running it over you LAN. Easy software tools (no need to be a programmer) to roll your own operating environment, great device to create your own personal SWL station with LAN support. This is a SWL receiver create for the serious SWL environment with SWL supporting software.
Good Luck Tim N9RO

The video shows me how far ahead the competition is. For $7499 and $200 per year shake down fee I am not impressed, in fact what I am seeing in the video is a bit silly for the cost. At this point in time it is beginning to appear for the hobbyist market the Open Source community is far better at software delivery than a small software house with its closed source and limited resources. With all the problems they appear to be having getting this out I could see bug fixes and upgrades coming out even slower than before. In addition, Flex still has the old technology legacy line to support drawing on its limited resources and unfortunately for Flex I see this bleeding them for a long time and this is one monkey their competitors will not have on their back. This line is shaping up to be a big disappointment for most of us and I at one time was very excited about it.

Being an experimenter my operating habits are probably not typical? All my CW is done via the keyboard (has been since the late 70's when I started doing keyboard CW using a KIM board) so the much debated turnaround delay is not a big issue for me. My audio is often times produced using a $1.99 mic from eBay (it gets good reports). I use this low cost mic on the ANAN, I just simply plugged it into the mic jack set the levels in PSDR and used the space bar for my PTT (PowerSDR mRX) nothing else needed to be done. CW reports have been good and when testing using the RBN output appears to be in the neighborhood to what PSDR say's it is. Have employed it on WSPR 20 meters and again no problem. The WSPR SNR readings I have been getting between the ANAN and the Flex 5000 are so close at this time I would not claim one is getting any better readings than the other. The ANAN-10 is quiet I don't know it is on, but at times I have so much Cisco equipment running in my Ham Center you would not hear it anyway. I will not have a switcher supplying power to any of my SDRs so these linear supplies with their fans add to the high level of room noise. My limited experience with the ANAN so far has me feeling good regarding the software support. For example, a new release of PowerSDR mRX was released and a few noticeable bugs were reported, they were fixed in 24 hours and then in the next 24 hours another release was put out with some minor fixes along with an enhancement. My ultimate goal once I have all my radios converted to LAN devices and everything reasonably integrated (no converters no Skype etc) is to have all this crap stuck in my Ham Center and then simply operate everything via IP from a nice clean desktop or in my wheelchair using a mobile device anywhere in the house or next to the pool, I can now realistically see that reality in the near future. These are truly exciting times for us experimenters.
I cannot comment on the some of the confusion regarding the ANAN documentation because I have not experienced it firsthand yet. Perhaps this little bit of information will be of value to some of you?

Received my ANAN-10 today 3/14/2013. Delivery was FAST!!
Ordered Sunday night at 8:18pm (CDT) paid via PayPal, very easy order process. Shipped Confirmation was in my mailbox before Monday morning at 7:05am (CDT) Received call from FedEx Tuesday 2:30pm (CDT) saying package would be delivered by 10:30am (CDT) Wednesday. Due to delay outside FedEx control at Memphis airport packaged was delivered at 10:22am (CDT) Thursday.
Will be setting up rig later today after some network changes and the fun will begin. Little rig has a nice heavy feel to it, a great deal heavier than my 1500, good looking case. Will be posting my results on my web sites.

I've got the same issue with mine. The sensitivity is horrible. Local FM stations barely come in on the included magnetic whip.
Since so many are having good results, there must be something in the setup that is being overlooked.
I found this device very disappointing but then again it was only $25 I got what I paid for. Tim N9RO

Frank,
Thanks for posting you business experience with Flex, the ham community needs to see when vendors lack common courtesy, I see Flex treating their customer base NO better. I believe Flex Radio Systems views the ham community as being composed of a large number of SUCKERS ready for the picking, and after following the Flex Reflector they are probably correct. However, they are creative, by requiring a large down payment for something they could not show works they develop a fools list most medicine men would pay thousands for. Thanks again, your posting was very informative.

I have had a UV-3R (UV5 was not available at the time of purchase) for over a year now paid around $40 shipped and for the money it is fine. The receiver is not the best, I have to have it connected to my tower mount antenna to say it was satisfactory. However, if you live close to the repeater you frequently operate it would probably be a great little radio. Construction was fine and hard to believe you can have so many features in a sub $40 transceiver. A better handheld antenna would probably help this little guy a lot.
