1  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Watt meter on: May 17, 2013, 08:52:09 AM
Decided to go with the Elecraft W2. It matches my K3 and matches the repaint job on my Alpha 76a.

I liked the Autek's price, but it looked like some of my early homebrew projects.

I wish my homebrew projects looked so nice.  Smiley  The Autek actually looks much better in person than in the manufacturer's photos.  Hope you enjoy the W2.

You may want to check out the Autek Research WM1.  I believe it is only rated for 100 watts on 6 meters though.
3  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Flex 6700 vs Anan 100D on: May 10, 2013, 02:20:45 PM
Yes, the competition benefits us all. Maybe someday I will see my dream of a turn key or near turn key, 2M/70cm all mode SDR designed exclusively for weak signal and satellite work.

That sounds awesome to me.

And both radios have such lousy transmitter IMD specifications that in the real world would  making having such excellent receivers of waste of good technology in the real world.
Both manufacturers simply dont get it! They build receivers  that perform well yet put cheap 12 volt  poor IMD amplifiers in the box. Its plain technical stupidity.

I want to like the Apache, but this is what I have been concerned about. While your posts about transmitter IMD annoy many, you are of course correct to be concerned.  I wish more were.

Looks like I'll stay on my original course and purchase the QS1R and exciter.
5  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: Receiver buying advice please on: May 07, 2013, 10:54:26 AM
Two SDRs that can do this are the Perseus and the QS1R.  The Perseus can record 1600 kHz of bandwidth and the QS1R can record 2000 kHz of bandwidth, both enough to cover the entire AM broadcast band.

Yeah, I'm still planning on buying a QS1R, but that may not happen for a few months.  Meanwhile, playing with the budget-friendly PCR-100 sounds like fun.

Using a point 'n click logging system with integrated EIBI, HFCC, etc. (I personally use Shortwave Log), clicking on a spike, whether in a 192kHz wide display, or a 12kHz display, will give you at most a list of stations that are supposed to be transmitting there. No more. Therefore, the only advantage of a wide panadapter vs narrow panadapter for MW use is the ability to watch lots of spikes go up and down. Handy if you are keeping tabs on many slots at once. Useless if you are actually listening for a particular station.

Wow, that's neat.  And thanks for sharing the PCR-100 ideas.
7  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Windows XP - the end approaches...... on: May 07, 2013, 09:16:30 AM
One reason Windows got so big was a consistent interface and driver support.

That, and some of their business practices.   Wink

But seriously, I've been thinking of re-purposing my XP desktop to give Linux a try.

I'm not so sure that most care one way or the other about having to use an external PC. In either case they just want it to work well. I wonder if ANAN users are experiencing stuttering or other problems that some Flex users have complained about?
My point was that some of the criticism of the Flex radios in the past was directed towards the fact that they used PC's running Windows and that Windows was not a real time OS. I guess I should have been more specific rather than just citing the use of an external PC.  The critics always harped on latency and said that the Flex line would always have issues because of it. Now some of those same folks seem to be championing the ANAN over the Flex and it appears to me the ANAN is just as dependent on the PC and OS as the older Flex radios while the newer Flex 6700 is not. It's just an observation.

Yeah, I understand.  It will be interesting to see this plays out.  Also, I have been curious if ANAN users have experienced issues with latency and their external PC?

As for belittling people on public forums for their choice of equipment, it's not just in Amateur radio forums that happens. I used to be into woodworking and some of those forums can be just
as brutal if you are not using name brand equipment to produce something. Post a photo of a project and not mention equipment use to make it and you'll get all kinds of positive comments. But, add that you did it with a low cost table saw, then you'll be told how your work would be
better if you used a top of the line cabinet saw.  People being people seems to be the norm in
most forums and people don't want to think a person could make something as good as they did without spending a ton of money for the best of the best.

I agree completely.  I am a member of a martial arts forum and there are plenty of similar nonsense debates that amount to nothing.  And I have some friends that insist that the only good trucks are made by GM.  They are actually insulted by Ford, or (gasp) Toyota owners.  Brand loyalty is an interesting thing.

I see both sides of some of the Flex debates.  Some are offended that anyone likes their Flex radio and some are offended that anyone would say anything critical about their Flex radio.  I do believe that comments about specs, operating the rig, and ones experiences with the manufacturer are fair game and should not lead to hurt feelings and arguments.

In the end, I'd like to see Flex succeed.  It's good for amateur radio to have as several viable radio manufacturers.

I've often wondered where the idiotic term "fanboy" originated.  I can't see how someone enjoying using the particular brand of radio they choose to use should make them a "fanboy" but if that's the case I was once a Kenwood "fanboy". Also have been a Yaesu "fanboy" on occasion. I've never been an Icom "fanboy", just never really cared for them.  But, I don't go around bashing them every chance I get. Lot's of folks like Icom and I say more power to them. They just aren't my favorite. I still don't get you guys who feel you have to bash things you don't like. If you don't like a brand of radio then by all means, don't buy it or use it. Use what you like and let others use what they like. Pretty simple concept. So simple even you and the rest of your ilk should be able to understand it. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I agree with your premise, but much of the problem was created by Flex themselves.  Consider that some of the most hated companies right now are banks and satellite/cable TV providers.  Why?  Misleading advertising, the way disputes are handled, the mismatch between marketing and the customer experience, hidden fees, and not keeping promises are some of the key reasons.  Many would argue that Flex is guilty of some of these behaviors.
13  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: Beware of Cedar City Sales on: May 03, 2013, 09:42:10 AM

Quit being a cry-baby over a $20 item!  Just exchange it for something else and move on.  Hams are some of the cheapest and most petty groups of people you can deal with!

I have to agree.  The dealer did offer to exchange the item, which seems more than fair under these circumstances.
14  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Still No Ammo on: April 27, 2013, 10:39:22 AM
Ammo is loaded and sold to:

1- Government (1.5 BILLION rounds) No palatable explanation why 70,000 government agents require an average of 1,600 rounds of ammo a year)

I have a relative who is one of those government agents.  Since 9/11 there has been an emphasis on being well qualified with ones sidearm, so they shoot more.  These agents include the Air Marshals, DEA, ATF, etc., etc.  In addition they need ammo to perform their job.  We don't want them scrimping on ammo do we?  The media has made much ado about this.  Much ado about nothing in my opinion.

Or, we can read the follow up posts as they occur and save you the cutting and pasting.  I saw nothing new in your latest post.  Am I missing something?
