181  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: NEED HELP WITH A SOCIAL ISSUE on: May 27, 2011, 09:21:53 AM
Tony, I have had problems with the neighborhood juvenile delinquents congregating near my house and am very interested in this topic.  I am familiar with the device being used by shop owners in the U.K. to discourage loitering.  Seems like it was called the Mosquito and is very expensive.  It produces audio frequencies that juveniles can hear but most adults can't.  I have been unable to find a schematic for this device but have been playing around with a 555 timer as an audio generator and built a simple audio amplifier with a horn tweeter.  It can produce sounds that adults cannot hear but my teenage kids sure can.  It works, but the range is limited, so I'd be interested in your findings.

Classic.  As often happens when a neerdowell gets caught, they shift the blame to the victim.  So you're sticking to that lame story that he's trying to get paid twice?  Why don't you make this right before you're even more embarrassed by public scrutiny?

Well Jerry, you're one ham I'll never deal with.  Where there's smoke there's fire, and the way you've threatened legal action against the posters on this forum makes you look even more despicable.  Are you going to report me to the authorities for expressing my viewpoint?  Go right ahead.   Tongue

The fact that your rambling post is in all-CAPs and the fact that you actually did receive the items just to refuse them really makes me wonder what the rest of the story is...

But that's okay as long as he is now current with his dues.  The BBB is known to give poor ratings to those businesses who don't pay dues, and look the other way for a while whan a dues paying member rips off customers.  There are plenty of news stories about this on Google.

The advice you've received so far is good, not idiotic.  You're swimming against the current. As Ken pointed out, the correspondence you've received from the city probably spells out what you need to do.  Most communities have ordinances about upkeep and the storage of boats, cars, bulky material, etc.  Many communities post their ordinances on line.  If not, go to city hall and take a look at the relevant ordinances.

If you're getting certified mail, I'm sure the ordinance violations and the remedy are spelled out, along with how long you have to comply.  Sometimes if you're friendly you can gain an extension but now that it's gotten to this point I recommend you focus your energies on getting the property into compliance.  Trying to find out who reported you is wasted effort.  The city agreed, so you really have nothing to gain by going down that path.

In most instances if you do not resolve ordinance violations yourself, the city will do it for you and send you the bill.  And you could end up in municipal court.  I'd recommend you quit swimming against the current and get the ordinance violations resolved.

I'll pass for the same reasons I don't shop at Wal-Mart.
188  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: The Validity Of Reviews on: April 14, 2011, 09:50:50 PM
Well said.  I also like to look at reviews when shopping at Amazon.  It doesn't take too much experience to figure out the reviews that offer meaningful information.  And the rest can be downright entertaining.  Same with the reviews here.  Some are useful and some can be taken with a grain of salt, but overall reviews can be very helpful.

Jari
Go to this link  http://www.flex-radio.com/Products.aspx?topic=F5Ka_details

This link describes the Flexradio 5000a and it's add-ons INCLUDING the VU5K. Near the bottom of the advertising is:

"RoHS Compliant Manufacturing
FlexRadio Systems takes environmental issues very seriously making concerted efforts to minimize the impact of our products on the Earth."

NO WHERE does it say the VU5K is NOT RoHS compliant

This kinda of advertising is VERY confusing and borders on deception......
I can fully understand why EU hams are upset and angry at Flexradio.
Stan K9IUQ

You know, the thing about this is that it is either intentional or it is not. Stan would have us believe that this is intentional and therefore deceptive advertising. He is very care not to say that in so many words because then he would leave himself open to a lawsuit. So I see this as heavy-duty spin. He uses facts to lead the reader to believe  something that may not be the truth.

The most likely reason for the error on the Flex web site is that someone forgot to update the site when the problem was discovered.

Regardless, the web site IS wrong and should be fixed. I sent email to Gerald, Greg, and Tim asking that the web site be corrected to be accurate.

I doubt seriously that Stan could be subject to legal action for stating his opinion. If he believes what he is saying is true, and I have no doubt that he does, then it would be very difficult to make a case for slander.  And if FlexRadio Systems were to file suit against him for stating his opinion, then they would be viewed by many to be a less than reputable company.

Perhaps you can follow Steve's advice, and in your case cut one leg for 3700 kHz and the other for 3900 kHz (or one for 3800 kHz and the other for 4000 kHz) or some other suitable variation on this theme.
191  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: Universal Radio - Great customer service! on: April 10, 2011, 09:22:05 PM
Universal Radio has a great website.  I've placed two online orders in the past few weeks and the service was great.  I'll continue to be a customer.
192  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: cb at 5 watts using a dipole..... on: April 01, 2011, 10:17:54 AM
This has turned into a odd thread, with folks complaining about CB conditions.  I also believe you should obtain an amateur radio for this project.  It better fits what your are intending to demonstrate and is also an opportunity to introduce your students to amateur radio.
193  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: cc&r's and hoa's on: March 24, 2011, 09:27:33 PM
I am fortunate enough to live in a subdivision built about 20 years ago and there's no HOA.

Nearby there is a nice city park with a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, softball and soccer fields, playgrounds and walking trails.  We have trash and recycling pickup, Christmas tree recycling, we are within walking distance to award winning schools, and best of all no neighbors who can tell me I can't put up antennas.  Oh yeah, we have police protection too.

All this for $0 additional per month.  I'll pass on HOAs.

194  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Japan tragedy, will it affect the “Big 3” radio suppliers? on: March 17, 2011, 08:53:50 AM
I'm more concerned about my friends and the people of Japan.  These manufacturers will be fine.  For those interested in helping financially consider the Japanese American Citizens League, www.jacl.org.

The price doesn't seem to be excessive considering its capabilities.  I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of this rig.
