76  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Networked SDR's - The Future of Hamming? on: August 19, 2012, 05:53:28 PM
Interesting ideas.

Personally, I was thinking it would be neat to have my own networked radios installed at various locations.  Several networked SDRs located throughout the U. S. at various family member's houses might be interesting.
77  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: help me pick: QS1R+QS1E or ANAN-10+ on: August 18, 2012, 02:10:41 PM
If you are just looking for a good HF/6m rig in that price range, I would suggest the Kenwood TS-590S instead - 100 Watts, Automatic tuner, and plug-n-play.  You will have far fewer setup headaches and can get on the air right away without too much fooling around or waiting for some unpaid volunteer software developer to get around to implementing the feature you need (if ever).

You really should consider this, or even a budget rig like the FT-450D.  Set up a station and after you've gained some experience, add a SDR to your station.  I'm personally looking forward to adding the QS1R to my station someday.
78  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: FT-450D 5Hz off on transmitting PSK on: August 15, 2012, 12:33:32 PM
True, in the default mode one can push the "CLAR" button and use the VFO knob to adjust the Clarifer (RIT).

Or via the Menu Mode, one can change the Clarifier control knob to the "DSP/SEL" knob.  I prefer this method.  When using this knob in conjunction with the Clarifier, remember to push the DSP button until the cursor does not appear in front of the various DSP functions, or the knob will control that particular function (Contour, Notch, DNR, or Width) rather than the Clarifier offset.

I never could understand why anyone feels so strongly about "their" radio.

I agree, a radio is just another tool.  It is not a religion.

Blasphemy!  My radio is the one true and good radio!    Smiley

80  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Seriously - Why buy a Flex 6700? on: July 31, 2012, 09:13:00 AM
I don't want my rig to be too small, I might lose it.   Wink
81  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: WIRELESS INTERNET on: July 27, 2012, 08:20:41 PM
I've been doing it for years via Sprint and it works great.  The security of the wireless signal is not an issue with modern cell phone networks.  The signal between your wireless device and the cell site is encrypted.  And as W8JX said, you use standard internet encryption schemes just as one does when using DSL or a cable modem for internet access.
82  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: Are Non-Ham Hobbyists Welcome In Here? on: July 23, 2012, 09:08:35 AM
There have been a few trolls who have created anonymous profiles in order to spew nonsense, so some members are leery of those who do not identify themselves with a callsign.  Of course there are a handful of trolls with callsigns, so it cuts both ways.

Welcome, and enjoy the site, you can learn a lot here.

83  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Practice CW on a TS-590s? on: July 21, 2012, 11:55:55 AM
Indeed!  They confuse their opinion with facts, and you really can't have a meaningful debate with someone like that.
84  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: SDR of the future on: July 02, 2012, 10:47:29 AM
I don't know, the threads about theft of intellectual property have been interesting to me.

Thank you for the links.  I enjoyed the SDR link very much.

Would your proposed modular design allow one to swap the panadaptor section of the rig with the section that contains the VFO knobs (so that they would be more centered on the rig)?
85  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Flex Site: "Imagine a transceiver that changes Ham Radio - Forever.." on: June 06, 2012, 12:11:35 PM
I for one, value your opinions Stan and am glad you have posted your experiences here. It is appreciated.

Ditto, I have learned a lot from Stan, Gene, and Brian (but haven't seen any posts from him in a while).
86  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Flex Site: "Imagine a transceiver that changes Ham Radio - Forever.." on: June 05, 2012, 01:30:53 PM
I agree about the "rah rah forum" suggestion.  Although I don't own an SDR yet, I have learned a lot here and would hate to see discussion curtailed because of brand loyalty (or disloyalty).   Smiley   We should be able to discuss the good and the bad aspects of SDRs without it becoming too personal.
87  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Transceivers made in USA on: June 05, 2012, 01:09:04 PM
The U.S. was very productive from 1950 to 1973 and then started a period of decline until 1990.  U.S. productivity rates have been rising since 1990, making us one of the world's most productive countries by many economist's measures.  Several companies are moving manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.  And as pointed out earlier, "Japanese" and "Korean" cars are being built right here in the U.S.

Meanwhile, China's economy seems to be cooling a bit.  Sooner or later they are going to have to deal with their currency issues and with a slowing economy.  The outlook is pretty good for the U.S., in my view.  Even though our labor rates are higher, our manufacturing sector has the advantage of high productivity rates and a weak dollar.

88  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Extinction Level Event? on: May 28, 2012, 12:21:45 PM
I would not get too worked up because of an article on a conspiracy theory website.  And hundreds of above ground nuclear tests occurred between 1945 and 1963, when the Partial Test Ban Treaty was signed.
89  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: The ongoing push of Ham Radio to EMCOMM on: May 19, 2012, 11:15:40 AM
"You know its strange that I ask a honest question and folks get all defensive about it."
"I don't know that I would call my situation socially challenged." Yes, that is a defensive statement!

When you start asking honest and rational questions and rid yourself of the imaginary demons that seem to haunt your ham experience, let me know. I am not usually a bragger, but if you will make those efforts of self-improvement and demonstrate progress, I will make an exception and share a lifetime of service (paid and volunteer) with you. Otherwise, you are just wasting everyone's time with your grumpy foolishness and attracting other eHam.net trolls to this string. I am placing you on ignore to mark you, along with K1CJS and seeking logical conversation elsewhere.  Wink

So much for your post on May 17th where you put CJS on ignore.  Methinks someone is a bit fond of arguing.

If you want a miracle you contact Rohde & Schwarz International, if Jesus was a RF engineer he would work for R&S

LOL, good one!   Cheesy  They are impressive indeed.
