Hi Dave, The power cord you have on this vintage rig is correct. The meter thing took me a min. hihi and I have a TS 440 on the bench now. Check to see that the R.F. gain control is not fully counter clockwise, it should be the other way. GL HTH, Rob WA9UAA

Hi OM, I have the earlier 706 MK II, for it's size, it is a super rig. I would review the posts on each but I suspect you will go for the Icom. See if it goes on sale for Dayton. Gl, Rob

Hi Tom, Depending on how serious you are about 160M, it is possible to load a full sized dipole cut for 80M if it is fed with ladder line and an out board tuner and balun are used. I would suggest that height above ground for the feed point is more important. An inverted "L" with plenty of radials would do a better job on 160. The above mentioned dipole will load up and do a fine job on 160 M through 10 M if one can get the height above ground. GL HTH, Rob

Richard, Go with the Icom 718, if you can, get the DSP noise reduction, Icom's is one of the best. Run Open wire feed to your G5RV via an outboard tuner. Tune up at 5 watts and then increase your power a bit and tweek the tuner. The 718 will give a very good account of it self. Get the center of your antenna up as far as you can, having a tuner and open wire feed allows a lot of flexability. Now, if you can, go for the IC 746 on close out, it has DSP noise reduction built in, I still recomend the out board tuner, balun and open wire feed. but it is a REAL step up especially if you want the all mode VHF, other wise the 718 will do.If you can't do much with a dipole go with a vertical with a good radial system. Don't be afraid to ask questions! GL es 73 Rob

Hi Ian, Just a quick idea, try adding some length to your feedline. It and the antenna may represent some strange imbepence on 20M. Try 7-8 feet if you have a place to run it where it won't get on the way. I presume you are useing a manual tuner between the rig and feedline? GL, Rob, WA9UA
