1  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Utility transformer causing RFI? on: November 26, 2012, 02:10:24 AM
Anyone know what this could be?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FppsZjpMFM

It can be heard all through the spectrum up to about 35 MHz or so at my place, but the loudest peaks seem to be at around 3 MHz and 9-10 MHx. Strangely on AM broadcast I don't hear it, and am yet to find much of it in VHF AM. With my VX6 in AM mode on 35 MHz there were two nearby poles much louder than others. Not sure what good that info is.

Here's another clip from later that same night. At 1:00 AM local, the noise suddenly cleared up. It doesn't get this good at night anymore since...just S5-S6 buzz at most without the 20-over peaks after 1:00 AM. What happens at 1:00 AM, I have no idea . I have called the utility, hopefully they have someone who knows what they are doing.

2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Baluns and signals on: September 06, 2012, 08:04:58 PM
I don't have much more room, I suppose if the antenna seemed bad on one of the higher bands I could add a resonant dipole for that band. I do seem to work whoever I hear though, except on 80m. That could have more to do with antenna height as its only 25-30 ft. up, I have no taller trees and it's rental property so I am lucky to have what I do on the air for now.

I have a ladder line fed antenna (Cobra Ultralite). I have been using it with the internal balun in my MFJ manual tuner. What performance gain if any could be achieved using a separate good quality balun? Would I be likely to gain any efficiency or tuning range? The antenna tunes well on 80-20, above that is a bit more difficult.

I thought about checking out one of these rigs but from the reviews it seems like just about everyone had to get their first one replaced due to defectiveness!
5  eHam Forums / Elmers / Freqency needed on: January 20, 2003, 04:13:45 PM
That's where they are on 14.178.

They are using Kenwood TS850's with the DSP-100 to do this. If you listen for more than a few seconds you'll probably hear the website advertised www.ka0ka.com.

I have one of these radios but not the DSP-100. And if I had it I probably still wouldn't be willing to do what I'd need to do to the radio- it gets good audio reports as it is. If the radio had an audio problem, then I could see the point.

Yep, that's why the tone system is sometimes called

CTCSS

Continuous Tone Coded Squelch Something

(I don't remember what the last S stands for...system?)
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / Creating Morse Code MP3 Files on: January 14, 2003, 08:28:39 PM
Most soundcards are full duplex, meaning they can play and record simultaneously. There should be no need to connect the input and output of your sound card together. Get a code program as mentioned, and let it send while a WAV recording program runs. Then convert to MP3 after.

The only way is to use the speaker out jack. You can get an attenuating cable from Radio Shack, or make one, as described on many different PSK31 websites.

I use my FT100 on PSK31 like this and have not had any problems.

How about maybe this?

10  eHam Forums / Elmers / MS-DOS PSK-31?? on: January 12, 2003, 05:01:52 PM
Go to www.psk31.com

In the software section there is one DOS based program. I don't know if it is stable or not, but it's the only one I have seen at all!
11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Capacitive coupling? on: January 11, 2003, 03:43:03 AM
I started an article below (SWR variance) and I got a reply that sounded correct. Over some types of terrain, my SWR does not waver while driving.

Is there anything that can be done about this "capacitive coupling"? Is it an issue with the vehicle frame's grounding? Because I know the antenna is grounded to the trunk lid, and also inside the trunk to the main body.

Thanks for any replies!
12  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / SWR Variance on: January 07, 2003, 11:58:23 PM
This sounds like it...as there are some stretches of highway I can go down at 70 mph and have no problems.

Can anything be done about it?
13  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Been having awesome qrp results mobile - anyone el on: January 06, 2003, 11:49:02 PM
I have worked a lot of QRPers on 30 meters CW from the mobile, and I heard them fine...which means I could have worked them at 5 watts. I don't do QRP mobile, and most likely won't, because being mobile I'm weak enough already! I do cut the power down some though, so that the stronger stations come back to me. My car doesn't make a lot of noise, but some places I drive through are noisy.
14  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / SWR Variance on: January 06, 2003, 11:44:29 PM
I use an FT-100 and an Outbacker Perth Plus for my mobile set-up. The antenna is on a trunk lip mount.

Anyway here is the problem. My SWR will vary while driving, but not on every band. 10, 12 and 15 are fine. 17 and 20 exhibit the problem. 30, 40 and 80 are fine also, so it's just those 2 bands.

I e-mailed Terlin about this a while back and they said it was because of the band tap's proximity to the vehicle frame (the taps for the lower bands being closer to the vehicle), but this doesn't fly though because 30m and below are fine.

By the way if the car is standing still and someone grabs the antenna and sets the whip wiggling, the SWR does not vary in the slightest. Even with a spring attached, the whole antenna could be moving and there is zero SWR fluctuation. This ONLY happens while in motion.

Can anyone think of a cause/cure? I have no idea!

Hello, and welcome to the hobby.

Results will vary widely depending on band conditions. Best hours for 10 meters are probably from about 10:00 AM-6PM EST, although 10 meters can sometimes open unexpectedly.

The type of antenna should not really matter too much as long as it is properly installed. A horizontal dipole antenna should be at least 1/4 wavelength above ground (not too much to ask for on 10 meters). A vertical antenna will need a few radials strung out below it to optimize the angle of radiation.

A 10-amp power supply will be sufficient for 25 watts output.

Don't worry if you don't hear a lot of activity right away...we're coming to the low point of the solar cycle and 10 meters can seem dead at times, but it's really not. It was very active during the 10 meter contest a few weeks ago and signals were very good. You can work the entire planet on 10 meters when people are there and the conditions are good.

73 and good luck.
