Lighten up and learn to show some respect.  You'll be "old" a darn sight sooner than you think and wonder where the time went just as all of us have.
Lighten up and get a sense of humor.  Now that Im "there", age wise, Im proud to call myself an "old-fart".   It wasnt easy getting here (and being on the cheap side definitely helped).

I did a conversion of .4um and it came to 1.575 inches.

Yup; Thats about right.
3  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: Any decent inexpensive SDR shortwave receivers out there ($300 and under)? on: March 19, 2013, 07:56:03 AM
Add a few more dollars and get a Ten Tec RX-320D. I recently purchased (2) used Ten Tec transceivers. The receivers of both are terrific. That led me to purchase a demo RX-320D from Ten-Tec which will arrive today. Reviews give the RX-320D very high marks. The biggest gripe concerns the control software for the radio. Comments indicate better performance can be obtained using other control software, some of which is freeware. .... W0NTS

* I have one and love it, but its NOT an SDR radio.
* Yes, there's a lot of 3rd party software, but none of them will change the performance; they just vary in terms of convenience feartures and usability.
* The 320 !!BADLY!! needs to be updated to accomodate a higher speed USB connection

Right now doing legal broadcasting on a 50KW short wave station in Monticello Maine on Friday nights.

*You're* Fred Flinstone ?!?!?!
You have a great show.  I heard a (I think) repeat awhile back soliciting reports and I almost did, hoping for a qsl & a mentioned bumper sticker (does the station really have any??), but being a repeat (from Im not quite sure when), I didnt.   Makes me want to make darn sure I catch this weeks show!

If only I had not junked that 1957 Chevy Convertible I had back in the 60's.  Grin Grin

OK.  What would you do with that $1200?

6  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: I Bought A New Personal Computer-Should I Bother Adding Serial Ports? on: January 31, 2012, 07:55:17 AM
One of the big disadvantages of serial vs. USB is that with serial, you always have to get to the back of the machine which may be problematic depending on your layout.

Which serial cable?  Null modem or regular serial?Huh
USB never has that problem.

Serial is dying.  USB may not be here forever, but it it'll be here a long time, yet.
The newer usb-serial converters work fine.
7  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Solving the Rats Nest Problem on: January 12, 2012, 12:32:43 PM
I've put off repairing a hole in the ceiling and repainting, just because I dread removing the equipment and its' wires (along with my computer setup)...  How long?  Three years.

Ah.   Single, eh?

Use separate raceways for power+RF vs low level signals.

I'll second the motion re:WBCQ on the weekends, if you can avoid the eternally creepy "Brother Stare".

Ive used them and they were perfect, and very reasonable.
12  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Design an easy circuit for me?? please?? on: May 24, 2011, 06:20:18 AM
Depending on the accuracy of the simulation, Im not sure there's any trivial way to do it.  The brightness curve would need to be non-linear; Im not sure sinusoidal would quite do it either, but it would be close, and a good place to start.   This is a job for a PIC (or any other suitable cheap, programmable micro) driving a LED with PWM.
And long as you'll have extra outpout pins, I would consider a multi LED approach so that as the "beacon" is pointed away from the observer, it also becomes more diffuse as well as dimmer.
13  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Front panel printing on: February 28, 2011, 06:55:50 AM
"Silk screening the front panel is no doubt the ULTIMATE way to go.... "

Nope.  Engrave and fill is the ultimate way to go.
One way to go (from 1 of my favorite websites):   http://hackaday.com/2011/02/17/etching-panel-faces-on-the-cheap/
14  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: give some radio money to a food pantry on: December 18, 2009, 07:35:16 AM
Who's Lexus??  You mean recipients???  I'll bet $$ that you have no idea what your talking about.  Out here in reality, there's >12% unemployment and a LOT of skilled, hard working people are hurting.

Asside from Mr Downy, the response (and lack of it) on this topic is embarrasing.
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / Broadcasting - Is this Broadcasting over Ham? on: July 09, 2009, 12:50:39 PM
What about the relays of NASA TV xmissions (audio) over repeaters during missions?  I know of atleast one (in Minneapolis) that does that.
