Who needs twitter or facebook when you have a hobby like ham radio?  Even though those 'new' ways of keeping in touch are catching on with all too many, I would be extremely surprised to find many serious hams on them.

Just go to Twitter and do a search for #DX then see if you feel the same. Twitter is fast becoming a DX Cluster site. And with smartphones it is moble. You take your DX cluster with you wherever you operate from. Our club the Hoosier Hills Ham Club (http://www.w9qyq.org) has a website, Twitter feed, YouTube account, and Facebook page. You need to cast a large net to catch the diverging amateur radio community now.

QUOTE:
"The  NTSB 's December recommendation to ban all driver "nonemergency use of portable electronic devices"  should extend to Ham radio, GPS units, iPods, ebooks, and any other device not associated with vehicle operation. Ham Radios operators should not be exempt from such prohibitions."

That would also mean that you CAN NOT play your car radio/tape player/CD, use your heater/AC unit or any other electronic device since it would not be associated with "vehicle operation"

I don't need the feds to protect me from myself! Nor do I want to live in a "Nanny State" either!

All those China made handhelds seem to have either a Kenwood type speakermike wiring or the Yaesu type wiring. So if it's two pin think Kenwood and single pin think Yaesu.

***What would you want in a new 526?
<SNIP>
Otherwise give me an Eagle with 2M added.

Allison

How about a 2m/1¼m/70cm version of the Eagle. Could you imagine them sitting side by side on your desk. 160m thru 70 cm put me on the waiting list!

I wish I had my old 526 6n2 back, now that I'm older and wiser!!!

The Browning Golden Eagle (the Cadillac of the CB world in looks and price) had that ping Incorporated in the transmitter (it had a separate transmitter and receiver). I believe the ping could be turned off if desired, but most users left it on to brag that they had the best. Some tech types put the ping in less expensive CB radios to try to imitate the Browing, which really was an excellent CB radio system for its day.

We used to imitate that ping using a D104 mic by putting a large fish hook on the back side of the mic head on the bottom screw and clip it off and bend it to where the side lever would just catch it when you keyed the mic. (like a music box works) The vibration on the head would make a sound very much like a Browning Golden Eagle

37  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Is it inappropriate to talk about --------- on UHF/VHF on: October 25, 2011, 03:31:17 PM
There used to be a couple of older fellows here local that would get on the air a couple or so times a day and chat. "Al" would normally be heading to his office or back home and "Henry" would be either at his house or down the road at the local Evil Empire. (WalMart) They were fun to listen to because it didn't even sound like they were listening to each other they just made random comments. (They had started talking daily on HF back in the 50's and ended up living in the same town and moved the conversations to the repeater.) After a while they would sign off till the next time. I always joked about them as being the "Al" & "Henry" show on the repeater. "Al" is now SK and "Henry" don't get on much any more. I can honestly say I miss hearing the "Al & Henry" show. 38  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Discone antenna choices? No low band needed. on: September 19, 2011, 02:40:36 PM
You might want to give this one a look http://www.hamstick.com/d16.html The + version is only $54 has no "low band" element and has the N connector you're wanting. It's listed as a scanner antenna but is also listed for 2m 220 & 440 TX.

39  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: hp 110-3500 mini combo audio socket on: August 26, 2011, 07:47:32 AM
I had a Compaq Mini that is the same netbook. I found out that it's the same exact plug (1/8" stereo 4 pin) that an iPod Touch uses for the earbuds with a microphone and Yaesu uses for their speaker/microphones. Mouser sells those connectors. You can also order just a cable with tinned wire ends or a cloning cable for a Yaesu HT's from your favorite ham radio dealer and cut it in half.

40  eHam Forums / CW / RE: USB or LSB on CW? on: August 13, 2011, 08:13:30 AM
Well I had to check this out on my radios just to see what the fuss was all about. I have a Yaesu FT-817 and a Kenwood TS-450Sat. I set both up on 10 meters at 28.010 MHz and did a little QRP testing. The Yaesu set on CW and the Kenwood also the same both with 800 hz sidetone. They hear each other on the same frequency. Switching the Yaesu to CW-R there is NO CHANGE on either radio with the tone staying the same. Switching the Kenwood to USB I hear the Yaesu exactly 800 hz higher in dial frequency. Now when I switch the Yaesu to CW-R there is NO CHANGE on the Kenwood. I still hear the Yaesu at 800 hz higher on the Kenwood readout.

So the bottom line is just one of preference. Do you want to hear the tone go higher or lower when you scan up in frequency. This isn't worth arguing about.
41  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: A few questions about building a simple HT CW keyer. on: July 03, 2011, 06:39:17 PM
And for a parts source or wiring diagrams for speaker/mics think Kenwood HTs. They are both wired the same.

42  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Any Simplex / Peer to Peer Freq. for on the road to Dayton? on: May 20, 2011, 02:09:44 PM
For FM the calling frequencies in MHz are:

10m = 29.6
6m = 52.525
2m = 146.52
1.23cm = 223.5
70cm = 446.0

If anyone will be in the Bedford IN area you're free to use my EchoLink node 145.72 simplex PL 136.5 or the Hoosier Hills Ham Club's 2m repeater W9QYQ at 146.73 - offset PL 107.2
43  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: fldigi, OS X, & FT-817 on: March 24, 2011, 05:00:44 PM
According to KA7OEI on his webpage at http://www.ka7oei.com/ft817_quirks.html He says this:
Quote
Don't use the "PSK-U" or "PSK-L" mode for digital modes. For some reason, there is a slight frequency shift (10 Hz) between receive and transmit when those modes are selected for the "DIG" mode. Use USER-L or USER-U instead.  This frequency shift is (ironically) important on a mode like PSK31.  For modes like SSTV and RTTY, 10 Hz is unimportant, but to avoid possible confusion, ALWAYS use the USER-U mode.  Why?  Aside from not having the 10 Hz shift problem, digital modes are generally used on upper sideband on all bands these days - particularly when audio-sourced modulation schemes (such as a sound card) are used.  Using upper sideband also allow the actual carrier frequency to be determined easily simply by adding the dial frequency to the audio modulation frequency.

You might want to go double check your settings for the "DIG" mode and make sure you don't have it set to PSK instead of USER. Just to make sure.
44  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Local Police Department License Renewal Question on: March 09, 2011, 05:13:32 PM
The bad thing is that even if you get it renewed you will have to have a license modification before Jan 1 2013 when the FCC is forcing everyone to go narrow band. (12.5 kHz) Unless the license they have is already set up to include the new spacing. If they change from regular FM to a digital FM then the license has to be modified for the new emission mode. I just finished going through that at the school I work for. We changed all the radios to 12.5 kHz digital FM encrypted and had to have our license modified for the new band width and emission mode. Then sometime around 2020-25 it has to be done again when they make the change to 6¼ kHz bandwidth spacing. Don't you just love the government.........NOT!
45  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Help with setting up a small cross band repeater. on: February 24, 2011, 05:44:12 PM
Got out the flame proof suit, etc.  Before you get too involved into the cross band repeater, figure a way for the thing to ID the 440 transmitter.  When you use your 440 ht, you will id and that in turn will id the 2mtr output of the cross band rptr. But, when the cross band rptr hears a 2 mtr signal, and re-transmits it on 440, it won't id with your call, thus it is illegal.
A lot of people will say "who cares", because it's just a local thing.  Right is right, wrong is wrong.  I guess I grew up "old school".

I got around that using a Byonics PicCon and cheap 2m HT set on low power. Worked like a champ and IDed my crossband every 10 minutes.  If he uses the crossband radio in a locked band repeat mode. (RX only on 440 and TX only on 2m) there isn't a problem with the ID, just possible reception problems of the 2m repeater directly using the HT.
