Unless you're a brute and want to carry enough batteries and possibly a solar charge system to power a 50-100W rig, you're most likely going to do it QRP. If that is the case, I'd look at the FT-817 from Yeasu. 5W output, can run on internal batteries for limited time and a small 12V gelcell and a small roll up solar panel along with the FT-817 and you can cover all of 6M on SSB, CW, FM, Packet, PSK31, etc. I had one and it was a great little portable rig. Make yourself a roll up 6M vertical or dipole and when the band is open and you're on top of a mountain or high terrain, you should be able to work many stations with 5W. Granted it isn't going to compete with a 100W station driving a 11 element long boom yagi but it will make QSOs.
Good Luck
Gene W5DQ
I agree with Gene W5DQ. Plus the 817 would give you 10m CW & SSB 28.1 to 28.5 MHz. Also 2m & 70cm all modes, and with an antenna from Arrow Antenna you could do hill-topping and satellite options as well. Not to mention all of the HF bands if you get your license upgraded. Just something to think about. WW KB9TMP

ANYTHING BUT IE8 I run Firefox, Opera, and sometimes Chrome. If you could combine the best parts of all three into one browser it would blow away everything. Just imagine a browser with Chrome's speed, Firefox's add-ons and Opera's speed dial and page size control along with the mouse shortcuts like rightclick hold and left click to go back one page or left then right to go forward again. For me if an ad is over 3 days old I "assume" that it's already sold. Whenever I sell something I make sure to mark it sold because I don't want to be bothered for the next 6 months with emails asking if the item is still available. It's just easier on everyone!

This is from Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_wrench#Bristol"The Bristol screw drive is a spline shaped with four or six splines.[22] The grooves in the wrench are cut by a square-cornered broach, giving a slight undercut to the outer corners of the driver. One of the main advantages to this drive system is that almost all of the turning force is applied at right angles to the fastener axis, which reduces the possibility of stripping the fastener. For this reason Bristol screw drives are often used in softer, non-ferrous metals. Compared to an Allen drive Bristol drives are less likely to strip for the same amount of torque, however the Bristol drive is not much more strip resistant than a Torx drive.[citation needed] It was created by the Bristol Wrench Company. This type of drive is commonly used in: avionics, higher-end communications equipment, cameras, air brakes, construction and farm equipment, astronomy, and military equipment. A Bristol screw with a pin in the center is also used as a security screw in the Playstation 3." 73 de KB9TMP

(Quote)"Another option is the 857D, I guess should have put that into the loop, but other than remoeable face, I do not think I am gaining anything other than VHF/UHF."(/Quote)
True but you'll be loosing the auto tuner if your FT-450 has one. Not a big problem if you use a ATAS 120 for your mobile antenna. You'll still be missing the tuner with it as your base radio unless you use the ATAS 120 there also.

I just installed Signalink USB with my Icom 746PRO and it copies well. However I can not get it to transmit. The PTT light shows transmission but the radio does not get the signal and transmit. I am using 6-pin data socket.
When I had a 746 (non Pro) it had two separate pins for VHF and HF digital transmit. You might make sure that your pro doesn't have that or if it does that the Signalink USB is set up for the band group that you are trying to send on. (just a thought) 73 de KB9TMP

In the 817-MEM program click at the top "File> Setup..." you will have a popup box called "Setup communication" and it will have a box labeled Serial port with a box to select from the available com ports you can use. The other box labeled speed seems to only work on 4800 if you set it to any other number the program won't read or write to the FT-817. When your done just click OK and it should work for you. Hope this helps!

If you press the 'F' key then the number 4/RPT key that is the shortcut to the repeater shift menu. You can select +/- or simplex there and just hit the PTT to accept the change. Works lots easier than turning on or off menus the 'normal' way.

I own both rigs right now. I'm using the TS-450 as a base and the TS-50 mobile. Both rigs have NO BACK LIGHTING for the buttons. Lucky for me my truck has lights in the rearview mirror that I can turn on and see what I'm doing. I've also had the TS-450 sitting in the truck for short hops and it will only fit between the seat and the floor shift standing on end. It's way to large for 'mobile' use.

I'm up in Orange County Indiana and the local repeaters are dead except for the ID. Now when it's net time they come out of the wood work after the net is over....silence!!! I think the internet is at fault. (Hey you have to blame something other than ourselves!! 73 KB9TMP
