16  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Adapting morse key plugs on: July 02, 2010, 02:21:02 AM
I believe you can do just that...You will want to look to your wiring diagram in your Rig manual so that you have the correct wiring polarity for the tip and ring on your Key connectors. And a 1/4" male with the adapter plug on the end is not hard to find.  Grin God Bless and 73, Jerry
17  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Wire antenna on a hill on: March 23, 2010, 03:14:51 AM
My friend, one of the antennas I use and enjoy so much is a 80 Meter Full Wave Horizontal Delta loop which is fed at a corner with a 4:1 Current Balun, the height of the feedpoint side of the triangle shaped antenna, is at aproximately 40-50 feet, and from there is sloaps downward to about 15 feet height above ground. It works (for me) very well and I hope you have the same experience, Hey put it up, Try it, and enjoy it. God Bless and 73

18  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Reducing noise levels on: January 27, 2010, 03:48:21 AM
If you feel anything like I do...I Truly dispise "White-Noise!" Heterodyne, Static, Lightning cracks, the whole works! I don't like the "root-hog" sounds of a station that has moved up just a little too close, for comfort!

Some of this, you can't do much of anything about!
In fact I'd say some will offer the advise of; "hey fella that's Ham Radio and thats just, how it is!

But then...Some of this?
You can do something about it!

Some years ago with pure luck, I stumbled upon a JPS NIR12 Dual DSP Noise Filter. Yeah I know, we've heard it all, BUT I gave this one a try.

This DSP Filter, worked so well indeed that of all the Ham Radio equipment I owned, that JPS was one of the last things that I would ever let out of my sight! Lately...I purchased a Yaesu FT2000 and still - I will continue to use the JPS NIR12, even with this great Ham Radio that also has DSP filters! Yet, in my "Humble Opinion" no one has come close to the art of DSP that JPS did, over 15 years ago!

In the days gone by JPS manufactured and sold the DSP for about $375.00 and yet I believe they were so ahead of their time with the manufacture of this external DSP unit and fewer hams ever knew how advanced this filter actually was! The result was that JPS sold off the company and I believe Raytheon absorbed them and the NIR12, was then gone, from the market!

I believe Time Wave makes one today, that may be called the 599ZX (or something like that) that possibly is very close to NIR12. I have not operated one of these units, to be able to compare them!

There are true DSP Filter units now, that an operator could literally spend thousands of dollars on that can remove low fequency HUMS, Static noise, you name it and they have something that will help BUT how many can afford this? I also believe that better DSP advancement is truly available, but Rig manufacture cost would be so high, that many won't spend that kind of money to buy it.

Well..."Take Heart Brother" You can still find the JPS NIR12 Dual DSP Filters out there, Ebay, and Ham flea markets Etc. They seem to sell for around $100 to the $200.00 (Mint with everything)Range. So if you want the truth? Go sit an observe a Ham that has one and knows how to use it.

Sound - for me now? I am experimenting with not only DSP but with external equalization so that I can somewhat taylor the sound that I "DESIRE" and will help with some hearing loss that I personally have.
Hey it's FUN...what can I say?Huh

God Bless you and 73

19  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Speaker Recommendation on: January 25, 2010, 03:14:38 AM
Hi Bob,
I totally agree with your description, as I also am now using a Yaesu FT2000. Allow me to share this with you Bob.

I found a simple Musicians (small size "Hot Spot" monitor, as it is described. There are many brands of these small speaker monitors, the one I chose is made by Peavey company. These are quality speakers and are tough as they are most used during live sound on stage.

Here... is the "SECRET"
Somehow:Get your hands on a "JPS NIR12 Dual DSP."
It's very sad because they don't manufacture these any longer but they can still be found, and Hams sell them.

Use the rig AF or sound output, to feed your sound into the JPS. The JPS output will then feed on, to your speaker. NOW...Operate the JPS which will remove white noise, static, on and on, etc etc. The JPS NIR12 also will give you the listening comfort of some what adjustment, in hearing Frequency that pleases you.

Bob, of all the Tweaks, tricks, and tips I have ever used, this is one that I CAN NOT DO WITHOUT! Not only will you have the Rigs DSP adjustments, but with the JPS NIR12, you have assistance to find that "Sweet Spot" that makes listening...A Pleasure.
God Bless Bob, 73 and remember whomever passes on, with the most equipment-----***WINS***

I've used my 80 Meter loop, fed at the Corner with a 4:1 Current Balun and Coax for many years with wonderful plug and play results. I do use an antenna match for my Tweaking, but it's always worked, extremely well.
21  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: moral question..please advise on: December 12, 2009, 03:46:15 AM
Wow...what a "delicate situation" to handle!
You know some times folks won't always admit some of the reasons, for why they decide to leave the hobby!

For instance... I was once married to an (EX) spouse, that really hated Amateur Radio, and the fact that I enjoyed it, so much. And, I sold my station and left the Hobby for a few years. Of course I told my friends that I was "burned out" with it, as no Man wants to say "my wife won't let me play with this anymore!"
Later in my Life (and after I remarried)I found out that my "True Soul Mate" tells me go play radio and that she loves the idea of seeing me enjoy something which makes me happy! Wow...what a different point of view that still, makes me smile!

You know...if you are friends, you could just admit the feelings you've written here, about this situation. No - you don't want him to leave the hobby and is he really going to sell his station, for this reason? If your really close friends, you might say "OK" I'll buy this equipment from you with the offer that you can buy it back for what I pay for it, or If I decide to sell it, then I will ask you first if you want it back?

Never know...could be some financial reasons or some reason he wants to go in another direction for a hobby.
BUT...either way you will have your friend covered.

God Bless - Merry CHRISTmas 8-)

22  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Callsigns with initials on: December 04, 2009, 03:33:18 AM
Hi Ed,

Some slogans:
"There are no strangers in Ham Radio just friends who have never met".
"There is no stupid question but it is stupid not to ask a question".

I appreciate those quotes Ed. Isn't it amazing how far we might travel, by adopting those slogans as a pleasent attitude to have, in everyday Life?

Ed...First of all?
I just liked the idea that I could "make a choice" about having a personalized call sign that I wanted.
And, I admit that when I was a child, my father actually had a branding Iron that he made and used to mark some of his own wood work - with the pride he'd taken to build it, and so, being named after him, I also took "Personal Pride" in what those initials stood for (for myself) in a loving, respectful memory, of my Father.

As mentioned earlier, the use of it with personalized license plates is nice. I would suppose that this is something unique to each individual that decides to take this offered option, if in fact that call sign is indeed available, to them!

A few more quotes I appreciate, Ed:
Some things - That We can never take back?
The Stone.......After it has been thrown
Hurtful words...After they have been spoken
Time....After it has passed us by!

"There are no strangers in Ham Radio just friends who have never met". Man I like that!

God Bless you and your family, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year to each and every "New Friend."

23  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: CB style amps and Ham bands on: December 01, 2009, 05:15:02 AM
As was suggested in an earlier post?
I can only imagine, that it is our Elmers, Mentors, TEACHERS, and yes even the VEC later - That Do shoulder such a great "RESPONSIBILITY" when it comes to teaching a new prospect, all about Amateur Radio!

An fine example of this (for myself) was one of the first Golden Rules, that I was asked to always observe, and this was about "RADIO MANNERS!"

"Before you get ready to transmit or call CQ, always try to look up and down the band, at least 3Khz - to see if the frequency is already being used." Even then, always ask first "is this frequency in use?"

Now days? You mention this around an brand new operator, who joined up simply because of what they call "Radio Sport or Contesting" and just see if they don't laugh and say "Man it's kill, or be killed" you move, or just get out of my way!

Now, look around us these days...In These times?
When "Respect for our Elders, Politeness, Manners, RULES" should FIRST be taught at HOME by Responsible Parents...IT'S NOT! But people continue on to say; "what's gone wrong - How could this have happened?"

Sadly now days? We have Kids who teach other kids, how to survive, by utilizing "SHORTCUTS- and HOW TO CHEAT!"

The buildings FALL DOWN, and folks can die - because they have worried MORE about profit, being faster and CHEAPER, using LESS WORRY about the INTEGRITY of what was first invested "INSIDE" - which truly mattered - BEFORE - all other things, that may come later!

Why would a new Ham ask; "Can I use a CB Amplifier on the Ham Bands?" I believe it is because the TEACHER did NOT cover this subject, while the STUDENT was being taught! How important we all are, as a "MENTOR" as a "TEACHER!" Especially when a student asks questions like "What shall I do, Teacher?"

Will I, teach them to understand "It's Kill or Be Killed" or will I first explain "INTEGRITY" and the reasons for our MANNERS, AND OUR RULES. Will I take the time to explain to them the REASONS, that we don't do this or that!

OR will I advise them about a shortcut or a "CHEAT" of HOW TO WIN-and HOW WE LOSE, AT THE SAME TIME!

There are REASONS concerning all things in our lives!

On the Level and On the Square?
Most of these problems we ALL face, go back to the very "FOUNDATION and the INTEGRITY" of what we have been taught or we have learned, or what WE DID, along the way!

Like it or not?
WE REAP - WHAT WE SOW!

As a MENTOR, as an ELMER, as a TEACHER?
In all walks of Life...WE can invest first, in doing it right the first time, OR WE can sit back a thousand times, and continue to ask ourselves: "Why did this fail?"

"Raise them up and first set them on the RIGHT PATH and they will follow that Path"

God BLess You, Merry CHRISTmas, 73

I've only experienced a few, whom I could not confirm contact with in my logs on EQSL. These days, I also use Ham Radio Deluxe software, which also offers "Real Time Logging" automatically into EQSL, each time I add the contact into my HRD logbook.

I really do enjoy "Real Time Logging" and I certainly wish LOTW, would also offer that same feature.

What I have been amazed to find out???
Is the great amount of DX Operators, and even Special Event Stations, who are utilizing EQSL!!!! In fact "SOME" that have not submitted to LOTW, that in fact have submitted the matching Log, to EQSL!

Well I may never know the answer to the question of "WHY?" Yet...I believe that because it can be somewhat confusing to initially get setup on LOTW, and for others, with understanding of converting their Logs to Cabrillo format, for submission to LOTW - Maybe they give just up on using it!

Then there are those who are resistant to the word "CHANGE" or just a new way, of doing things!
I can understand how much easier it may be (todays times)in some Countries...to simply use E-Mail to confirm a contact, over the old method of paper and snail mail!

However...you are right, there have been some contacts in EQSL that I have no idea where that came from, so I just refuse to confirm it, and explain that it is not, in my Log!

God Bless You All, 73 - Happy ThanksGiving

I'm trying to remember, but you might try adding a .001 Uf ceramic disc capacitor added across the speaker wire connection Terminals. I recall this helping to solve some of those problems in the past.

Good Luck, God Bless, 73 8-)

26  eHam Forums / Contesting / Who can work a contester? on: October 15, 2009, 03:56:44 AM
I rescently called upon a station in Wyoming, working the California QSO Party, because I sure needed that state for my ARRL WAS and LOTW. It's one of those States that when you get down to the end - I just never have been able to make a contact!

I never even got to explain myself, or ask for the favor of the contact because when I said that I wasn't in the Contest the fella abruptly stated that he was only working those in the California QSO Party.

Well...I sorta sat there then...what else could I say, as he just went on calling CQ Contest, California QSO Party. Yeah I was Sort of embarrassed, and sort of broken hearted, at the same time!

Oh well I suppose that is Ham Radio, and I know that.
So? Any of you fellas that live in Wyoming or North Dakota, I think that is what I need to help finish out a WAS log. I'd sure be happy to make a contact.

27  eHam Forums / DXing / Increasing the odds when work DX "Split" on: September 26, 2009, 02:16:17 AM
I have had some good results working Split DX - by first Tuning into "HIS" listening window, to see just where "HIS" recieve PileUp frequency - is exactly located.

To me, that is where YOU simply will hear, so many different stations calling - one station on top of the other station - that you CAN NOT make heads or tails out of any of that pure Noise! I mentally note - at what that exact frequency is.

I then MAKE SURE - I transmit slightly up...or below...Most always BEYOND - AWAY FROM - THE PILE UP!

Have you ever noticed how so many times DXpedition Operators are always saying "Cmon guys - spread out?"

I have had very great LUCK - knowing where the Noise or PileUp is and STAYING slightly out above that Discombobulation!

Hey I figure their reciever is entirely like the one's we use. When you cannot hear in a Jumbled Mess - then move slightly to HEAR the stations that are beyond the NOISE that THEY CAN, UNDERSTAND!

For me...If I hear them say "SPREAD OUT GUYS" that means quickly get out on the Fringes - slightly away from the Freq - with the most stations calling all on top of one another. Honestly...it's worked well.

God Bless you and your Family, GUD DX, and 73 8-)

28  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / SteppIR vs other yagis on: September 18, 2009, 03:43:52 AM
One thing about it that I find honestly funny, Tom?
One may read some of the most "inflamed remarks" from someone... who honestly does NOT operate, or even own a steppir!

I can tell you that I purchased mine because I also love to chase and work ...DX stations and IOTA.
So when I do dive into, the "DX PILE-UP" and they come back to my call sign - using the words like "Big Big Signal?" Each time that happens (and that honestly happens alot) I think to myself, "Wow these SteppIR Yagi Beams don't really work - Do they?"

(Funny Pun) "Of course you know that SteppIR owner's pay those DX guys in advance to say such things, so that just can't be true!

Of course that "Big Signal remark" is always followed with a "Belly Laugh" and the words "Well Alright!"

Plus, I have to mention that with the "Reverse 180 Degree Operation Button" on the SteppIR Control?
I can go from due North to Due South in just a moment, without having added work on my tower Rotator and shorter wait time.

With the "Bi-Directional button" on the Control? If I desire to - I can Open the Beam Bi-Directional and ragchew several operators - East and West or North and South - IF I CHOOSE -at the same time!

Wow...where is the SteppIR Owner's NET when, we need it? Hahahahahahaha???

God Bless, 73 - Gud DX

I can agree whole heartedly with an earlier post to never forget to "GET THE ANTENNA RIGHT FIRST" then continue on. I also do admire fantastic AUDIO - BUT???

For the few that get offended-when reported that their Audio is splattering down, or upwards, at a tremendous "over-modulated" wide signal?

Cmon Guys...Realize that "excellent audio" includes NOT being over-driven, OR Splattering - like a bursting Hot Water Enema Bag, across the Band! YES -Beautiful Audio can be... kept within due bounds.

Just... one mans opinion, nothing more.
