On par for Mosley - no - not normally. Pick up you telephone and call Mosley. They have ALWAYS resolved problems with their products for me -- even if the product was sold 30 years ago (you can't say that about many amateur antenna mfg. today -- on their 3rd or 4th owner).

Mike -
One candidate Clipperton L amplifier just appeared on eBay. It is missing the RF cage parts (four 572B sockets, etc.) - BUT the power supply baord appears to be intact (but I would replace its old electrolytic capacitors before using!!)

There is no difference in this question -- if you change the topic to classic muscle or antique cars.
The real question is whether you are collecting a "shelf queen (garage show car)" -- or if you desire to oeprate the radio on a regular basis.
Maintenance, absolutely essential for regular operation. IF you don't have the knowledge or skills -- then you either learn (community college, Elmer, local electronics club, DIY/books) OR pay for the work. Sadly, there are more radios becoming avialable due to unwillingness of owners to pay for the repairs (largely their economic problem) than amateur that can repair -- any many of these repairs are a handful of parts ($10) and an hour or two of work.

I agree, the surplus Russian GI7b triodes would be a worthy conversion to consider. The Swan 1200 power supply MAY be able to handle 2 of these triodes. The tube is regularly less than $35 and is a ceramic RF transmitting triode designed for military (abuse) service. Look here for information, and contact K4POZ and W4ZT for conversion guidance. http://gi7b.gs35b.com/

Randy -
1. Icom uses Elecret mic elements (they are the only amateur radio mfg that does for all their radios). Heil primarily sells dynamic or magnetic bobbin elements (HC4, HC5).
2. You can get replacement elecret microphone elements (2 or 3 wire) at Radio Shack for less than $ 3 !!
3. It is possible that you may have a bad elecret element or not getting proper voltage to the element. Long ago (~ 1977) I did have one bad element on my new Icom IC-22S microphone, Icom promptly sent me a new element.

Dave Benson has had a number of good kits. You can also look to QRP groups (NorCal, AmQRP, Four State QRP) as well as some of the smaller Elecraft kits (K1, KX1, etc.)
Father-Son building can be educational and fun. The more compelx kits can actually inspire an interet to "know why it works" - there is a reason for math and science!

Yes, I have an Elecraft K3 - on order. Elecraft will be demonstrating the rig at Dayton. It is estimated that it takes about 6 hours to assemble the kit version
As far as Universal Serial Bus (USB) and RS-232 control --- I finally assmebled my first Intel motherboard (for my niece) that did not have an RS-232 port (it only had USB ports - BUT it did have a parallel port).
It is a tough design decision and if they had placed a USB or FireWire port in the radio instead -- people would complain about lack of the RS-232 serial port!

Unless the entire power supply (and transfomrer) were bad -- and you were rebuilding -- not worth the effort or $$ for a few more watts.
