1381  eHam Forums / Elmers / No Power Out On Kenwood TS-2000 on: March 02, 2007, 08:45:29 AM
As you mentioned, the TS-2000 is a transceiver with largely surface mount components.  What is your bench experience with surface mount electronics?

"I want to know about the tunning pots that are located in the back of the unit.  How do you set them up."
You don't.

This is a very nice amplfier that will last your lifetime -- if properly operated and cared for.

Please follow-up Steve's (WIK) suggestions.

People who repair HF amplifiers -- see far too many problems caused by broken ferrite core slugs -- due to improper tools -- that damage these cores.
Keep that 'golden screwdriver' in your pocket.

I always visually inspect new equipment acquistions (just like autos and trucks) some people care or their equipmnet -- while others deglect or abuse their equipment.

1385  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / SB-220 P/S caps on: February 25, 2007, 05:46:54 PM
CDE / Mallory is a US capacitor manufacturer, that should always be on your list.
They are available from Mouser, Harbach and other electronic parts suppliers.
http://www.cde.com/catalog/alum/#screw

Harbach Electronics has the FB-220 filter capacitor block -- that is ready to "drop-in" (without hunting for appropriate capacitors and bleeder resistors)
http://www.harbachelectronics.com/reference/harpg3cart.htm

I would also recommend the "soft-key" -- so that any transceiver can switch the amplifier - without damage.

1386  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / alpha power on: February 24, 2007, 04:14:39 PM
Sounds like you had that experience during the time that "Crosslink", Alpha's former parent corporation was being dissolved.
Many Alpha owners are glad that some people stepped up and were able to seperate the "old ETO/Alpha" from Crosslink -- before its eventual bankruptcy.

I had a chance to visit Alpha in 2004, a few months after this, to pick-up some parts for my 76PA.
I had an interesting discussion about their decision to select the 8877 tube for the new amplifier (with computer control) and avoid the all solid-state approach.

I had VERY GOOD service in picking up my prats and got to see Ronnie Milsap's Alpha in for refurbishment!

1388  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / SB-220 Cabinet on: February 24, 2007, 03:47:11 PM
You can look at the LMB Heeger cabinet line.
http://www.lmbheeger.com/products.asp?catid=16

Their "CO" series of cabinets are very much like the Collins "S" line and Heath "SB" cabinets.

They can custom build, but a telephone call -- may provide you additional information.  I believe they were the original OEM supplier to both Heath and Collins (based on both companies specific deisgns).

1389  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Azden PCS 4000 tone board installation on: February 24, 2007, 03:41:47 PM
You can install the ComSpec SS-64 CTCSS encoder.

IF you desire an external enclosure and knob to change the CTCSS tomes -- purchase the TE-32

The TS-64 is a CTCSS Encoder / Decoder

Good luck with it.  ComSpec is a very good firm with long-time CTCSS solutions for Land Mobile Radio (LMR) and Amateur Radio Service (ARS).

1390  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / FL-2277B (FL-2100) Conversion to 2 x GI7b on: February 24, 2007, 01:10:03 PM
Chris -

Lawson Summerrow, W4EMF has probably performed more conversions of the various HF amplifiers to use the Russian GI-7b and GS-35 tubes.
http://w4emf.gs35b.com/

Tony, W4ZT has a large list of GI-b retrofits !
http://gi7b.gs35b.com/

Tony also fabricates sockets!
http://gi7b.gs35b.com/gi7b.html

Good luck with the project !

1391  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Tube replacement on a FL 2100b on: February 24, 2007, 11:58:48 AM
I think you will be happy with the Taylor 572B tubes.
I belieeve that RF Parts offers a longer warranty period for them!

BTW, since you have amplfier open - take a look at W4CLM web page on the FL-2100b (bottom of page)
http://foxtango.org/amplifiers/FL%20Amplifier%20Evolution.htm

Now is the time for maintenance:

1. Check C222
2. Clean fan assmebly
3. Check bandswitch for arcing or corrosion
4. Remainder of W4CLM tips and visual inspections recommended with this amplifier -- before you "fire it back up"

1392  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / How to check out a used TL-922A on: February 24, 2007, 11:35:43 AM
"It took several seconds (30?) to settle at this reading."
That sounds like a capacitor discharging (either through your DVM or the resistor).

DO BE CAREFUL, the HV supply on the TL-922 will deliver 2.2 Kilovolts DC ..... woudl like you to be around to use it!  :-)

1393  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Heathkit SB-220 updates on: February 17, 2007, 05:32:53 PM
You can read Measures notes (revised 2001, originally published in QST 1989).
http://www.somis.org/SB220ci.html

Harbach Electronics now has the CDE/Mallory capacitors, BUT is going to change to 'snap'mount' versions later this year.  This is largely due to the 16 week lead time -- that Jeff Weinberg had to deal with for the USA mfg. CDE capacitors he has been selling.
