1  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Received a "Notice of Dismissal" on: October 23, 2010, 05:40:41 PM
The KJ6JW you applied for is only available for Advanced and Extra class licenses. Go ahead and upgrade then you can apply again if that call is still available. The advanced class license has also gone away so the statement below in your case is then valid. You can upgrade to extra then re-apply.
2x2's, 1x2's and 2x1's are reserved for Extra class licenses. Sorry.
2  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Antenna on the roof ridge line of a house? on: October 05, 2010, 05:36:59 PM
When i became a Novice in 1979 I lived in a restricted home so my first antenna was a Long Wire along the ridge of the roof. Worked Great and earned me my DXCC and WAS as Novice and General. A few years later sold and moved to an area where I was allowed a real antenna ( beam ).
Just do it and you will be amazed on what you can work.

3  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: New Speaker on: September 07, 2010, 09:41:46 AM
Rich,
I recommend the Soundsweet speaker. It's big, has lots of base and people with hearing problems tend to loose hearing the high tones so this works for me.

Cody, send me an email and I'll have your email address to forward you a nice article with drawings for a 1/2 wave coaxial verticle.

5  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Ameritron RCS-8V question on: August 17, 2010, 07:51:49 AM
I would set it up with grounding as default. I have had it that way now for 7 years or more and never a problem with Static builing up in antenna.
6  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Hustler 4BTV Radials on: August 07, 2010, 04:16:14 PM
each trap  is tunable, you just might have to retune the 20 meter trap.
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: call sign conssistantly misheard on: August 05, 2010, 01:47:06 PM
I would give your callsign regulary, then repeat it Phonetically such as 2 mike oscar bravo victor november. This will probably be a pain with you until you can upgrade and change your callsign. Some calls are just hard to pick up no matter what you do so you have to revert to saying it phonetically.
Good Luck & best wishes,

8  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: How many kinds of grounds are there? on: August 03, 2010, 06:58:13 PM
all these conversations about this tred leaves lots of grounds for argument.

You left out Coffee Grounds. Most shacks, but not all, have them also.
10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Effectiveness of a horizontal G5RV? on: July 27, 2010, 11:29:18 AM
I agree with W0FM. An Alpha-Delta DXCC would be more efficient and it can be setup to tune where you operate without a tuner if this is what you want. Without a tuner there is more effective radiated power. A G5RV, has to have a tuner, has losses and not very efficient if you compare these two types. My friend had a DXCC antenna so I just went over, took measurements and built my own for about 20 bucks in wire and the cost of an Alpha Delta center insulator that I bought. Has been up now for 9 years in 2 locations and works great and I have it hanging off a MA-40 tower now. My DXCC numbers are 285 so it works.
Yes the G5RV will work but for efficiency on actual radiated output power they are not very good and recommended for a serious operator. My opinion.

11  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Twisting in the wind... on: July 08, 2010, 09:44:49 PM
Tom,
Twisting it is standard on Ladder Line. it keeps the wind from whiping it around and breaking it. Hams will also run black dacron rope through the loops to help support the LL especially when the winds are strong. Twisting it has no effect of power or any other effect but just strengthens it in winds.
12  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Soundproofing a Ceiling on: June 22, 2010, 10:26:59 AM
Ron,
In my last qth I put up some cork board over drywall, then another layer of drywall and the corkwood board really sound proofed it...It's cheap and it worked for me.

13  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Dipole antenna and balun lenghts on: June 17, 2010, 04:26:21 PM
I wouldn't worry about that little bit anyways because antenna formulas are not exact and you will have to prune and trim the wire anyways. There are a lot of things to take into effect because every installation is different. What works at one location might be a little off at another location due to ground and close proxiemety of things around the antenna. Just leave a couple extra inches and then start trimming to get the antenna to operate in the band on your desired operating frequency.
14  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Dynamic vs Electret on: June 14, 2010, 04:33:32 PM
Guy,
the electret mic needs power to run. I accomplished this easily with my old TS-430. It's electret mic had batteries in it which I got tired of replacing so I found a B+ voltage in the radio that matches the battery power and thru one of the unused mic pins, I ran the power to the mic thus eliminating it's battery power. Perhaps you can do the same.

15  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Mosley / Cushcraft on: June 05, 2010, 11:12:47 AM
I have owned the TA-33M for over 22 years until recently when I moved and downsized because of age and limitaions of climbing a tower because of a back injury and 3 surgeries. The Mosley is FB beam and top quality. Only thing I have to say about Cushcraft is this, MFJ bought them out, enough said about Mighty Fine Junk! MFJ has no quality or quality control IMO.
MFJ Enterprises, Inc., Starkville, Mississippi has purchased Cushcraft Amateur Radio Antennas from Laird Technologies, St. Louis, Missouri effective July 31, 2009.
