1  eHam Forums / Remote HF Station Control / RE: DM780 diplay lissue on: August 13, 2012, 07:48:09 AM
Hi Robert

I run remote using both the iPhone and iPad. Although I have not experienced this problem, maybe I can point you in a direction that will help.

If you can see the desired video output on your pc then it should also be Good on LogMeIn. Make sure all your display settings are good here first.
Second, make sure it all looks good remoting from another pc before you try the iPad.
Although you said the resolution was fine, you might want to play with different settings on the iPad. I use 1280x768 on both the pad and the phone. Make your pc resolution match this.
Check the network speed, mine is auto, but you may need something slower.

Hope some of that helps. Again, if the video is good remoting from another pc, then the issue is on the iPad side.

2  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: Yaesu FT-950 - Contest Rig??? Opinions? Experience? on: December 12, 2011, 11:18:03 AM
I work mainly CW and RTTY contests. FT-950 works FB for me.  Wink
My only complaint is that I wish the CW filter could go more narrow.
3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Vertical radial system help please. on: November 04, 2011, 11:36:15 AM
Put in as many radials in the space you have available. Don't be concerned about the odd length if it is ground mounted.
Remember, the reasons for the radials is to eliminate the ground losses. The more you can help the vertical radiator the better.
4  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Side tone frequency for QRQ? on: June 16, 2011, 10:34:35 AM
The purpose of the dynamic tone frequency is so it can be adjusted for the operator's personal preference.

With the exception of modulated CW, you are not sending tones. The tones are generated in the radio for reception by the human ear.

Go with a tone that is comfortable for you.
5  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Yaesu FT-950 & Ameritron AL-811H -- Hooking them up? on: June 03, 2011, 11:15:50 AM
I also have an FT-950 and AL-811H.

Do a search on e-bay for FT-950 amplifier cables.

I found one two years ago that goes from the amplifier connection to the relay connection on the amp. Great cable, no problems at all.

CW-Man (also on ebay) has one that goes from the tuner connection on the radio to the amp. I have one of those as a spare and it works fine.

My only complaint about Yaesu are those stupid connectors. That's why I searched custom made cables on e-bay. Both are very well made and I think cost around $20.00.
6  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Tuning a Vertical on: March 15, 2011, 04:29:48 PM
The length of the radials on the ground is not critical ONLY if you have an adequate number of radials.  Two radials is far from adequate.  When there are only a few radials on the ground, they will appear mostly resonant and a little lossy.  The ground lowers the resonant frequency of the radials a lot, so if you cut them to 1/4 wavelength based on some formula they will actually be resonant at a much lower frequency.  That will lower the resonant frequency of the antenna, which is the effect you are measuring.

Trying to cut radials for a certain frequency when they are on, or in, the ground is a waste of time and probably won't be correct anyway.  You would actually have to measure the resonant frequency of the radials, but this is also a waste of time.  Gain will be very poor with only two radials on the ground.  For a 6BTV make them all 40 to 60 ft in length, and put in 20 to 60 of them.  After you do that your antenna should start acting normal again.  You will have to go back and undo the tuning you did to make the antenna shorter.  Performance should much better also.

Jerry, K4SAV

Jerry hit the nail on the head. Think of the radial filed as a "mirror" that the vertical radiating element sees. Current flows in the radial wires which keeps the ground losses down and helps the vertical radiate the RF into the air rather than roasting worms.
In a ground mounted antenna the radials are not the "other half of the antenna", but are a critical part of the antenna system. So the radials will have an impact on the resonnant frequency. Get a good radial field down like Jerry indicated...then adjust the antenna for resonnance.

A properly tune btv with a radial field should have an SWR of about 1.3:1 as the antenna is not 50 ohms.

As indicated in other posts, use the instructions from DX engineering and you won't go wrong.
8  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Hustler 4-BTV versus Inverted V on: February 25, 2011, 12:39:45 PM
I would go with the 4btv or even the 6btv. (yes the 6btv is about 25 feet, but who is going to climb up and measure it).

You will be surprized what you can do with a properly installed and tuned btv.
9  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Cushcraft MA 5V 5 band vertical antenna on: January 31, 2011, 03:44:21 PM
I have had an MA5V since 2002 and have been very happy with the antenna. Works well incomparison to my other antennas.

It is small in diameter, so it is low profile. I have used it as high as 20 feet and low as 5 feet, both with good results.

It uses the coax choke and the four rods to compensate for a regular radial field. I'd say for a compormised antennna it is engineered very well and it is durable. It does what it was designed to do.

I hope they continue to improve and sell this antenna. I'd buy another one when this one is ready to retire.  Wink

What's cool is that remote station operating the the newest thing to experiment with as there are lots of possibilities.

So far I have found that your standard remote software (I use LogMeIn) and Skype are the way to go. I use it with my laptop and my iPhone.
11  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Traveling Salesmans hotel room rig on: January 18, 2011, 10:02:13 AM
I use my iPhone for remote operation.

Using the free version of LogMeIn and the free version of Skype.

Works FB.  Wink
12  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: CC&Rs vs. TV stations and the cable company... on: January 10, 2011, 03:01:09 PM
I work in the television industry. Trust me the lost channels will return. It's a school yard contest over who has the biggest balls.

Regarding the HOA. If enough people in the association decide they want to put up outdoor TV antennas then all they have to do is vote on it.

Luca,

Make the app multitask.
14  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: RTTY on: January 03, 2011, 05:23:03 PM
Although you will occationally get a keyboard to keyboard QSO on RTTY, the majority of the traffic is during a contest.

Frankly with the duty cycle of AFSK RTTY you are better off running short exchanges rather than a ragchew.

If you are reading this before Jan 8, 2011 get on the ARRL RTTY Roundup. It is a great event to get into RTTY, but caution...it can be addictive.

I have a similar situation with my 6btv. I have a 50x40 foot yard that I share with two small children.

My 6btv is centered in the back of the yard. I have 40, 25 foot radials buried in a 180 degree arc.

I have had this installation for about two years. I work all the major contests and I do not see any degrade in performance or that the antenna favors a particular direction.

Go with what you have to work with and you'll be fine.  Smiley
