1  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: BV/PP5BS on: May 16, 2013, 06:52:40 AM
Any word on the legitimacy of this operation??  Signal was very strong for that part of the world. (although not impossible as 8q7kp was 20 db over 9 at times)  No email response yet.
Frank,

I haven't received an email response yet either and I haven't heard him/seen him spotted again.  Someone that night said every time he turned his beam towards Brazil the signal got stronger.  My guess it's not for real.

Any cluster will work for you.  If your software allows, filter the spots for Northeastern USA or something similar.

Legit?  I just worked him on 21.290 and it was way too easy.  Can't find anything on this portable operation and nothing on his QRZ page so I'm doubtful.  Anybody have any info?

I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to get them from Middle TN on 10 and 12 meters.  LoTW within 6 months according to their website.
5  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: "Please - No LOTW" on: April 03, 2013, 11:44:39 AM
As mentioned in other threads. more and more DX stations are subscribing to LoTW.  I've found a number of DX ops who state "no LoTW" upload eventually.  They just wait a bit to see if they get cards w/green stamps first.  I'm not implying they are in it for the $$$; it just may be their way of handling QSLs.

Here's a nifty little resource; stations (stateside and DX) that are known users of LoTW.  Interestingly you will find some DX on the list that have said "no LoTW".

Dave,

I'm still enjoying DXLab Suite after all these years.  Seemless integration.  Thanks for the great support too.

Operating skills.
8  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: How many of us are not using beams? on: March 28, 2013, 12:47:03 PM
102-foot long G5RV (flat top) up at 60 feet.  No amp.  I wanted to take advantage of all the tall trees here.  Planning to put up a fan dipole for comparison.  I used to have a tower at my previous QTH but why not use these 100-foot babies mother nature gave me?
9  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: T2GM Tuvalu just uploaded log to LoTW on: March 23, 2013, 08:17:54 PM
It's so nice to see these uploads to LoTW.  Whether they are major DXpeditions or individuals working holiday style, LoTW is very helpful to those who are looking for electronic confirmations.  Kudos to the ops and sponsors who spend so much of their time and money putting up these entities.

Yessiree.  Mine hit LoTW this morning too.  That was quick.
13  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Your favorite DXing technique/tip? on: March 03, 2013, 09:29:43 AM
As others have mentioned, listen first for patterns regardless of whether DX is working simplex or split.

1.  Try tailing in just before you think the op will return (just once and with your full call).  Listen for that ebb and flow to the rhythm.
2.  If split, pick a frequency and stay there.  I know many try to find a pattern of where the DX listens and they jump around based on that.  It works but the time it takes to find that pattern (if there is one), you could have bagged him/her already.  For me, staying put works.  Your mileage may vary.
3.  If you're running barefoot without a beam, you'll have to be surgical and creative as you may not be able to muscle your way in.  See Tip #1.

Oh, and before I forget; as Steve WB2WIK recently pointed out, get yourself a rig that says "you're still working split, dummy!".  Nothing worse when you don't turn off that split button.

Excellent idea.  I wish more disaster response agencies would think similarly.
15  eHam Forums / Remote HF Station Control / RE: DXCC? on: February 17, 2013, 03:36:05 PM
Thanks for all the replies.  My post pertained to me operating another station (ie: W7DXX) via remote control, not operating my own from another location.  I was clear on how to ID myself, just unsure about the DXCC issue.

As for "physical control" of the station, remote users do have control.  They can adjust the VFO, use the antenna tuner and in some cases turn the beam -- all via remote control.  I guess it depends on one's definition of "physical".  Anyway, it's like everything else in this (or any) hobby.  If you like it -- do it.  If not -- don't.  Thanks again to all.
