16  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 9M4SLL is on 12m right now calling NA on: March 14, 2013, 10:33:27 AM
Arrrrrgh!!!!  I worked them on 12 meters, but I see my call was busted to K1ZJS!  K1ZJH isn't the best call to bust pileups Sad

One of the keys for success in the pileup is to have a good call sign. You are an extra class operator so you can change your call sign with a 2x1 easily. 1x2's are very rare, just like Bouvet island 3Y0/B, hi! But many good 2x1's are available.
By the way, I think they will accept the error with your 12m Qso.

I sent in my ADIF from the ARRL Contest last weekend
after the contest ended last night.
Sent in about 8pm eastern time.
I had the confirmation back
within 10 minutes.

LOTW worked perfectly fine for me too. After the ARRL SSB Contest log submition got confirmation within few minutes. Huge improvment in speed after the system upgrades.

18  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Your Thoughts on the Future of the DXCC Program on: March 01, 2013, 07:55:39 PM
To say that Johnson island (KH3) will not be activated ever again is way too pessimistic and I completely disagree. Things will change, we just need to wait and live longer.  Smiley

I find funny when people suggest entities to me removed from the DXCC list just because of longer inactivity. If DXAC deletes entities every now and then because of inactivity where is the thrill? If P5, E3 ...etc have not been active for a longer period of time it does not mean these countries do not exist anymore. EZ Turkmenistan once was very common on the bands but not any longer. Chasing DXCC and trying to get on the Honor Roll is not for inpatient people, you need to hang in there for many many years in order to be able to work them all.

19  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Vatican ops and a new pope? on: February 27, 2013, 05:06:08 PM
Wouldn't it be great to have a special events station operate in the Vatican to celebrate the election of a new pope? Just saying. :-)

I would think the perfect time for a station to operate from the Vatican would be during the conclave, or after the new pope has been elected. A special event station commemorating the election might not be a bad idea.

The Vatican will be packed with tourists and reporters at those times and I don't know if that throws a monkey wrench into the idea but I agree with you. It's packed with tourists once a week when the pope says Mass from St. Peter's sqaure.  I got within 20 feet of Pope Benedict and it was quite a thrill.

Maybe one of the Italian members of this forum can comment on the idea. I only have the Vatican worked on 2 bands but no LoTW.

Chris/NU1O

I have confirmed both HV4NAC and HV0A via LOTW. Qsl manager for these two stations is IK0FVC.

Hi Chris,

I don't think 12m is much worse than 17m on the Skyhawk.  I need to use a tuner on both bands.  What you have experienced might be partly propagation.  Lately 17m has been better than 12m.  I agree that on RX the signals are way down on both bands.  I did a test on 17m with a local ham who has a resonant antenna.  On RX I'm 3-4 S-units down from him.  On TX I'm not that far behind.  If you could hear the DX then chances are you could work him.  The proof is in the log- in the last two days I've worked JD1/M, XT, and 9U on 12m.

Do you know of someone local to you with a resonant antenna on 12m and 17m?  It would be good to do a comparison on 12m.  When my buddy returns from Cambodia I will run some tests on 12m with him.

The bottom line is while the Skyhawk doesn't perform well on 12m and 17m it does give us a chance to work the DX provided that we could hear the DX.  And don't forget the antenna is a killer on the three bands it was designed for.  If you don't care about the excellent performance on these three bands then you could have gotten a log periodic antenna which will give you 4dbd on five bands.

73,
Jonathan W6GX

There is no doubt that of late 17 has been a great band. I have a local friend with 12 meters but he does his thing and I do mine.

I would not have bought a log periodic. I'd rather have an extremely potent signal on 3 bands but I am a bit greedy with antennas.  Wink

73,

Chris/NU1O

Chris, I think you are missing a lot with not having resonant antenna for the WARC bands. Yesterday I worked JD1/M with one call on 12m. I have 2el HEX beam and run about 500W on WARC bands. 12 and 17m have been excellent bands lately. The HEX at this point is OK antenna for me. I like to replace it with 3el StepIR but I live on a small lot and don't want to risk.  I know you have advantage with your Shyhawk on 20/15/10m over my HEX but I would rather have slightly lower performing antenna on 20/15/10m in exchange for having all bands covered. Maybe you can get one of those A3WS 3el Yagi underneath or above your Skyhawk.

When someone sets their goals or standards low enough, its easy to be very successful. (But to generate a false sense of above average accomplishment.)

I enjoy in the hobby now as much as I did when I first started (1986). No LID, DX cop, QRM, lack of ATNO will ever make me quit. Those who want to leave HAM radio will not be missed. Less noise and competition in the pileups. Adios!

23  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 4S7DXG QSL Arrived on: February 22, 2013, 07:51:09 PM
Col,

You have a well read ham news site and Ivan gives two phone numbers on his QRZ page.  Why don't you call him and get his side of the story?  I don't think Ivan should be blamed if Sri Lanka is a corrupt society and one of their soldiers let him hold his AK-47, or if he gained other favors with cold hard cash.

To me, the bigger story is I have been a ham for almost a quarter century and I have only managed to get one QSL from a Sri Lankan ham, Nelson, 4S7NE, who has the courtesy to have a mailing address outside of the country.

VA2WT, Guy, writes on your site that Sri Lanka has a big problem with their postal workers robbing the money from our envelopes which is what I always thought was the problem. If those of us outside Sri Lanka know their postal workers have been rifling through ham mail for decades and stealing our money shouldn't the resident hams in Sri Lanka also be aware of the problem?  Yet, only one ham in the whole country makes it easy to get a QSL.

For some balance, why don't you interview the head of the Sri Lankan Amateur Radio Society and ask if they know they have a theft problem, and if so, why they don't make it easier for foreigners to get a QSL?  You might also inquire about the availability of the Internet in Sri Lanka. It would be nice if some of their hams used LoTW but Internet service maybe prohibitively expensive in Sri Lanka.

I think either interview would make for a good read and both would really be terrific.

73,

Chris/NU1O

Let alone the problem with the mail theft, If you read the comments on DX-world on the 4S7DXG topic you will notice that some of the resident 4S hams do have internet since they have responded with comments trying to discredit the 4S7DXG operation. Yet none of these guys have been active on the air for a long time. Check the cluster if you don't believe. 4S is quite rare DXCC and I have a hard time to understand why is that so.

Mr.Tom
Ravensbergerstr.55,
32312 Luebbecke,
GERMANY

I used the same address and did eventually receive my card.

When this was briefly posted on QRZ.com I believe Tom indicated that he needed $3USD plus an SAE
for a return card.  Given increases in postage rates I might consider including at least $4USD.

GL de harry, W6DXO

Thank you W5RDW and W6DXO.

Thanks for all comments; they are really useful and / or encouraging.
My antenna is a nearly horizontal loop, slightly sloping from the terrace of my QTH down to the garden. The perimeter of the loop (an irregular polygon encompassing as much space as I could) is around 140m. The highest part of this polygon is some 30 feet over the ground, and the lowest is just about 10ft. I feed it through a remote SGC auto tuner.
I have noticed the loop shows some directivity towards the US, but I can't tell for sure. I haven't modeled it yet anyway. Signals from N and E usually come through consistently weaker, but of course I need to keep on testing and trying to figure how this antenna really works. Time is a limitation; I don't really have much spare time.
The rig is a Kenwood TS590, which is a very fine receiver, and I am just using 100W. I have a beam I haven't put up yet, and I am also bringing in a vertical for 40 and 80 next time I get some leave. 160 is going to be a challenge. No high trees around, and no space for decent RX antennas for the top band, but I will do my best anyway.
I don't know how long I will stay here. I work in the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and things in Mali are tough in that respect as you can imagine. Security is a big concern, so everyone is keeping the head more or less low and living with a degree of anxiety, but Bamako feels safe. Life here is pretty much normal, and the city is otherwise one of the most interesting places on planet Earth to live in. It is very beautiful too; the views over the Niger river I have from the window of my shack are just stunning (the house is partially built on the river). Check out the link below to see what I mean.
There are other hams in Bamako, such as my friend Hamadoun TZ6HY, but they are not very active these days. And authorities are just not issuing new licenses (you may know that the state of exception was officially declared in Mali a few weeks ago in light of the present situation and has not been lifted yet). In that sense I was very privileged to be given a license, but the authorities let me know very clearly when they gave it to me they were making a very "exceptional exception". It took some trying to get it, too.

I confirm through LoTW, or through W3HNK for the real thing. As you probably know Joe is about the best QSL manager that there is, and he tells me the cards will be out of the print within a week or so.

Fernando,
you are a true amateur radio ambassador. Thank you for being there for us. We certainly need more people like you in HAM radio.

I had also worked and confirmed TZ6TR but I wanted a back-up for DXCC purposes.

Fernando is a great CW op and I also just received my LOTW confirmation for TZ6BB.  Grin

I encourage everyone who needs TZ to work Fernando ASAP given the volatile political environment
over there there is no telling how soon he may need to go QRT.

73 de harry, W6DXO

Is the mailing address printed on your TZ6TR Qsl card? Any other info that I can use to locate his manager? I don't understand why there is no info on QRZ.com anymore.

Thanks,

........I had worked TZ6TR but never got it confirmed..........

I worked TZ6TR this past September and got his address from a JA who had got a card from him. I am still waiting! Getting the TZ6BB confirmed in 4 days is indeed nice!

A year ago I sent direct for TZ6TR but never received the card. There was address listed on QRZ.com but it's not there now. No info about the TZ6TR operation whatsoever. I am not sure if DXCC has even approved TZ6TR. I am glad TZ6BB is there for us. Quick LOTW confirmation, what else someone could ask for?

I have worked all of those, except ZS8, with 100 watts and a dipole or random wire, so it can be done with a hexbeam.

John AF5CC

My intention was not to brag about my DXCC totals but to let WD4ELG know that beam at 35ft will be a fine antenna. You worked 310 countries with 100W and dipole in 6 years period of time? Bravo!

30  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: OK, need to step it up to the next level on: January 27, 2013, 09:01:29 PM
Thanks everyone for the input.  Much appreciated as always.  While I would prefer to put up a yagi on 20, I can't get it any higher than 35 feet...which means it will be limited in its impact.

35 feet is a half wavelength on 20 meters so it may work better than you are anticipating.

73 and good luck,

Chris/NU1O

I have 2 el. Hex Beam at 40ft and with this antenna I have worked 310 countries on 20m in the last 6 years. Excluding 20m from the antenna array is a big mistake. 20m has always been the money band.
