I purchased a RCA VH126 rotor from my local big box lumber yard two years ago and it has worked great. Bought a second one just a month ago. Really like the whole 12 memory remote also. I always replace the zinc hardware with stainless and use no-ox or whatever you want to call it.
I can't help but wonder if the hams who complain about the cheap China junk have too large of an antenna on it and also overload their tower with antennas to a scary level. Maybe I just got lucky. My two cents.

For what it is worth, I have had good luck with older VHF/UHF FM crystal type radios that had a 45 MHz I.F. and then the 10.7 MHz I.F.   The last ones I pulled were from an old Johnson VHF radio and it had three of them.  On the top of the can it said "TOKO RCL"  and on the side it had four lines of print. First line = 1013, second line = 001, third line = 8626, fourth line = HK. Aprox. 3/8 square and about 9/16 tall.

Side note : if you try to open link in new tab you may get a "404",..type it manually in a new window.

Sounds like it may be the low pass filter board. I would check relay 11 and 12 for 12 volts when above 21.5 Mhz  ( P-03 pin 7 ), also you could check from the low pass filter board input to the normally open contact at relay 13 ( or the proper side of TC-01 or C-38 to see if you have continuity through the filter / or from the input of the low pass filter board to ground and see if a cap shorted.
You could also test for output right at J-02 of the 100 watt PA board.

 This link may help.  http://www.radiomanual.eu/schemi/FT747_sch.pdf

Let us know what you find.

As somebody that works with all types of commercial radios I would say go with the Kenwood. If you go Motorola I would stay away from the CDM 1250. There is a reason you can get one easily, they are junk, I know Motorola dealers that wont sell them for that reason.

8  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Tapered 10 Foot Tower Section Rohn 55 - 45 on: December 09, 2010, 07:43:22 PM
Hello,
I have done the typical internet hunt but could not find any answers. I have 4 Rohn 55G sections that I could get along with some 45G for a great deal along with all related hardware and guys. I thought at one time there was a tapered section available, but maybe I was looking at something else.

The reason I ask is I was thinking of having three 6' side arms at or near the top of the 55G  (35ish feet) for some larger omni antennas that do not need to be any higher along with torque arms and continue with 45G for a much lighter load at the top with proper guy wire along the way and only in the 75-80 foot range of total tower elevation.

Another note: The one section of 55G has a second set of "Z" bars in between the first and appears to have been used as a the top section and can not find any info on that either. ( I assume for a more sturdy surface for side mounts ?? I know I shouldn't assume:)  Any links I missed during my searches?

I did check many adds also, and to go with just the Rohn 55 only would be great, but I would want only 4-5 more sections and the ones for sale are already 75-150 feet so these would not be a deal if I have to buy a full tower anyway.

I know I could get something welded together but... I enjoy life and would rather do it correctly and within spec. (Thinking it is cheaper to buy all 55 than to hire an engineer) I have worked at 900 feet installing huge FM radio bays, strobe light repair, and misc. from cellular to public service and nothing scares me more than a local ham wanting me to climb his tower to overload it even more.

If there is a solution, that would be great, no solution means waiting and saving for a full 55G.

I love overkill, nature can get mean. Smiley

Any links I missed?? (I hope)

 Thank you for your time,

10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: radio storage in cold climate on: November 11, 2010, 10:11:22 PM
The dessicant will help a bunch, but in the past i used a good layer of newspaper around the unit then dessicant with radio /equipment in a good sealed plastic bag. I worked for me but maybe I got lucky, I guess the newspaper could hold moisture though. But even if I did wrong it worked for me for two years in Wisconsin. The gear came out great. The stuff only in a plastic bin looked like it was stored for 10 years.

 Hello,
I'm sure you can order a new one. When I got one last , I was looking for a old cb antenna from other radio guys and garage sales and it didn't take long and I had one plenty long.

12  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Radio slide mounts on: August 02, 2010, 01:59:22 PM
Does anybody know of a source of slide mounts for mobile radios ?  Everyone I have contacted says they are discontinued. (Hutton,Tessco,Gamber Johnson, ect. ) Done the extensive web search engines and anybody who has them online that I have called says they are discontinued.
Maybe somebody with some new old stock?   Something like this  http://hawkinscom.com/sdibracket.htm  or even the cheaper cb type at this point.  I need several. Somebody has to have them.

Any help would be most welcome.

 Thank you,

13  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: problem 10m rig... on: April 18, 2010, 07:14:46 AM
I am not exactally sure what the problem is but I can tell you that the 22.000 Mhz crystal is used on both the TX and RX. It is the main L.O.
If you frequency counter is not getting enough RF it will hop around and not give you a good frequency reading. There is test points on the CPU pcb and the main board for frequency measurements.

Hi
I noticed on eham you mentioned changing the crystal in this or a similar radio.
I m a ham (callsign / name), and would like to look at this.
Can you give me the bit of math / radios IF dance, to figure the right crystal for shifting to 12 meters?
Thanks

Hi name,

Well the short story is .....you change the crystal on the small CPU board. It is labeled x-302 on the schematic. It is a 22.000 Mhz crystal and the way it is used is...if you put a 21.000 Mhz crystal in its place and your radio says you are on 28.000 Mhz you are actually on 27.000 Mhz, You put in a 20.000 Mhz crystal in and you are tuned to 28.000 Mhz, you are on 26.000 Mhz and so on. I have used old computer mother board crystals in the past or old computr video boards, hamfest is good for that stuff. or online, i have ordered them before.

There is also a matter of tuning of the receiver front end and the transmit section (along with a few other things) but is very manageable even with the most modest tools and equipment.

I am not sure of your technical knowledge so I am not sure how much detail you need.  depending on what you want to do with the radio it is very good to work with for mods and ect.

There is also an IC chip you can replace ....the main cpu ( the 64 pin big boy)..a company from California used to sell them and I think they still do. It's called Chipswitch. It also needs a few other mods to get it to work with the chip on 12 meters but nothing a junk cb radio won't provide and gives you memory channels, split, better scanning, and more.

Hope this helps , if you need more help let me know.

P.S.  It is best to just tune the radio to 12 meters and leave it there but I have switched 2 crystals back and fourth and spread out the tuning but it is a compromise.
