If you have some old ham type mags maybe pass them along to him. I learned alot about ham radio this way when I was very young. Also if he has supervised internet acess maybe hand his parents a list of known good ham radio sites that he can vist.

A couple questions,

 Can you hear a mobile transmitting in the driveway?, or if you have a handheld, can you hear yourself on it?

Did you have an electrical storm in the time between it worked last and now?

I have the service manual in pdf format, it tells  you everything you need to know, it is about 8 megs.
