1  eHam Forums / Elmers / Professional Call Sign emblems for Cars--where to on: April 18, 2002, 03:49:35 PM
While I don't know of any products like this, another alternative is to use adhesive vinyl.  It's great for automotive use.  I have it on a truck that I take to Bears games... a big 3 foot wide "C" symbol on each side, and a smaller 1 foot by 1 foot "growling bear" logo on the back door.  It's survived the harsh Chicago winter with no problem.

A Chicago Tribune article last week talked about how custom shops are forgoing traditional airbrushing and pinstriping in favor of vinyl.

Any local sign shop can make this stuff.  It's even easier if you have a program like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW on your computer- you can draw out your callsign, etc. and have it made.  You can install it yourself or have the shop do it.

A good friend of mine works at a local sign shop (http://www.omnisigns.biz) and did the work for me as well as a logo for his own car: http://home.attbi.com/~n9oa/pics/van-back-callsign.jpg

Hey folks-

I want to set up a tracker for a cross-country trip.  I have the radio/gps/TinyTrakII all ready to go- but what do I want to set my unproto path to in order to ensure that I will most likely be able to reach a digipeater?

3  eHam Forums / Elmers / "Kenwood audio" - what is it ? on: August 29, 2001, 01:43:34 PM
My two main HF rigs are a Kenwood on the desk and a Yaesu in the car.  Even when parked with the engine off (as to discount road noise, wind noise, engine growl, etc.) the Yaesu audio is much more fatiguing than the Kenwood (both are in the same price class).  I think it's due to the fact that the atmospheric noise in the Yaesu is higher pitched.  Why this is, I'm not sure.  I haven't looked at the block diagrams and schematics.  I would guess that it is the method that each radio uses to filter the signal, but whether it's post-rf-chain audio filters or the IF filters, I can't say.
I used to have an Icom on the desk and it was also harsher.  (I have hooked them up to the same speaker, so I know it's not just the quality of the rigs' internal speakers that's the limiting factor.)

Hi-

just wrote a new program based on Moe Wheatley's modem.  It lets you read received text in a scrolling taskbar while doing other work on your pc.  It's free!  for more info, go to

5  eHam Forums / Elmers / IC-746 vs FT-920 on: February 15, 2001, 06:43:04 PM
Rogerio-

Can't comment on the 920 but there's a few guys here with a 746 and it is a very durable radio.  They have used it in Field Days and it did quite well.  Everyone I've talked to with one really enjoys it.  Like the other fellow said, hopefully you can compare both side by side.

6  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / ...and then there's Burghardt's.... on: February 14, 2001, 02:57:26 PM
I didn't like the way these guys charged me.  I traded in an old rig for a new one, told the guy over the phone that i didn't have the original hand mic.  He said, "no problem".  Well, a bill showed up a few weeks later for a new hand mic.  Never paid it.  That was about 3 years ago.  They lost me as a repeat customer.

Good Luck!  I think you'll find that you've opened up a whole new world for yourself- one much greater than you imagine.  73 and hope to work you on 10 sometime.

9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Working a contest when not in the contest on: January 30, 2001, 07:39:01 AM
One more tip-  before contacting the station, listen to a few exchanges to figure out the exchange the contest is using.  The exchange is info that is required to make the contact "official" for the log.  Usually signal report (59 or 599 for purposes of the contest), state or country, and sometimes CQ Zone (see CQ magazine for details on that) are used. Also, some contests require a serial number that starts with 1 for your first contest QSO and goes up 1 with each additional QSO.  If you work more than 1 station in the contest, make sure you don't repeat the serial number as that will show up in the logs.  You should be able to figure out the exchange within a couple of contacts, and this will speed things along for you and the contester, making your chances of getting a QSL better.

73 and good luck!

P.S. about 20 or so of my WAS cards came from contests.
