1  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / Looking for novice class instructor on: November 06, 2008, 11:48:51 AM
Hummm...If I ever need a detective, I'm gona try to hire you, W3HF. I don't suppose your first name was Sherlock in a previous incarnation was it? I think you are dead on for all the reasons you stated so succinctly. Add to that the fact that the first call (WB6PLZ) sounds vaguely familiar and it seems even more likely that the first "Lyman Ellis" that KB2VUQ found is probably my novice instructor.

I did some further searching online once I had the WB6PLZ callsign and address and I actually came up with an email address for the person I believe to be my first elmer. I emailed him two days ago but thus far I have heard nothing back. I still hope to hear from him, but if I don't, at least I have made the effort to re-establish contact and to thank this man for the help he rendered me and who knows how many others over the last 30+ years.

Thanks for the help! As the call sounds vaguely familiar, this is almost certainly my novice instructor.

In 1976 I was living in San Diego. My wife and I were practically newlyweds and our daughter had just been born in January of that year. In March of that year, we (yep, my wife, our newborn daughter in her bassinet, and I)began a novice ham class being taught in the social hall of a church. Methodist, perhaps but I am not sure now. The instructor was a ham named Lyman Ellis and he was the minister there at the time. Can anyone tell me anything about him or his current whereabouts or current or previous call? Of course he may be an SK now, but perhaps not. I would love to contact him and thank him again for getting me into ham radio over 30 years ago.

Any information would be much appreciated.

4  eHam Forums / Misc / AC6V site QRT??? on: October 21, 2008, 04:32:56 PM
Thanks James, the suggestion to clear the cache was a good one and I tried it, but that still doesn't get me into the AC6V site. This really has me puzzled.

5  eHam Forums / Misc / AC6V site QRT??? on: October 21, 2008, 01:26:32 PM
Well, I just don't understand why I can't bring this site up as others here obviously can.

I tried this link:  http://www.ac6v.com/

I tried it just now @1959 and get NOTHING (as in site not found)on both my laptop and my desktop computers and using both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Not only can I not bring it up today, but on various occasions when I have tried to bring it up over the last month or so I have not been able to bring it up either.

Stranger yet, I just called a friend and asked him to try and bring the site up and he could by entering "ac6v.com". I tried that and still can't.

Any suggestions as to why this might be the case here? What the heck is going on? I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but I consider myself at least fairly computer literate yet I can't account for this problem here.

And my condolences to the family and friends of AC6V. From what I have read online, he must have been a fine man and a ham who embodied the spirit of the hobby.

Thanks again for any help.

6  eHam Forums / Misc / AC6V site QRT??? on: October 21, 2008, 04:07:19 AM
I have only recently returned to ham radio. In looking for information on various ham related topics here on eham and other sites, I have often found links to AC6V's site but it is never up. I am assuming that it no longer exists, which is unfortunate as it apparently held a wealth of information.

Am I correct in my assumption? I certainly hope nothing untoward happened to AC6V.

Is there any similar site online that might be similar in content to AC6V?

Tnx...James...N4EKZ
7  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Quick Yaesu FT-7800 question on: September 13, 2008, 06:03:27 AM
3 quick questions...

1) Could someone please tell me what type of antenna connector the FT-7800 takes? I am assuming an SO-238, but certainly don't know for sure.

2) I also need some some quick recommendations for a dual band mag mount for this radio.

3)I also need to homebrew some sort of dualband antenna for base use and I have no tower. When it comes to base use, mostly I will be using this radio to hit whatever repeaters I can. So extreme height is not overly important...just relatively simple design/construction/erection for homebrew. If you don't know of any homebrew designs, then suggestions for a simple to erect manufactured antenna would be appreciated instead.

I've been pretty inactive for several years and I am definitely not back up to speed yet. I called myself doing my due diligence in researching a suitable vhf mobile rig that would also be suitable for base use. But it never occurred to me to check for what antenna connector I would need and Yaesu's site doesn't tell me what type of antenna connector this radio takes. In addition, it never occured to me that I didn't have an antenna for mobile or base use until AFTER I ordered the radio!
Getting old isn't that easy is it???

Thanks in advance gentlemen.

8  eHam Forums / Misc / 30 meter beacons? on: September 02, 2008, 11:22:52 AM
Just a quick "thank you" for the prompt responses"! It is much appreciated.
9  eHam Forums / Misc / 30 meter beacons? on: September 01, 2008, 10:54:39 AM
Not sure where else to ask this so I am putting it here..

Can someone tell me some frequencies where I can listen for some 30 meter beacons?

Also, is there a site somewhere that lists frequencies for beacons on the various ham bands?

Thanks!

10  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Need recommendation for handie w/ a larger display on: August 25, 2008, 12:58:40 PM
Thanks for the suggestion. I may have to do something like using an external display but I am not ready to take that step yet.

As I said, I can see the larger font numeric frequencies in the display with no problem, and I can see the smaller text. That is to say, I can SEE those smaller text letters...I just can't READ them. But perhaps I should add that if the smallest text in the display window was juuuust a tad bigger I would be able to read them. That is how close I am to being able to do so now.

You are correct of course about displays getting more compact rather than larger. I have even considered purchasing a used handie (if I could find one) that has a slightly more legible display, but I am afraid I would have to give up such bells and whistles as memory scanning and dual band.

So my search continues I guess. Anyone else have any suggestions?

11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Need recommendation for handie w/ a larger display on: August 25, 2008, 06:35:42 AM
I've been a licensed ham for many years but somewhat inactive on vhf for the last several years. I want to become more active on VHF and I have a Kenwood TH-G71A dual band handheld that works fine but I have a problem reading the smaller type parts of the display.

I was diagnosed with diabetes some time ago and one of the effects that this has had on my health is that my eyesight is certainly not what it was in my younger days. With my glasses, I can read the frequency part of the readout with no problem, but I literally have to get a magnifying glass to read all the smaller print on the display.

I want to purchase a new handheld, but I need one that has a larger display (for the smaller print) than my current Kenwood TH-G71A. Unfortunately, the closest ham retailer is hours away.

I surely would appreciate some recommendations for handhelds that would probably display the smallest print at least slightly larger than what I am using now.

TIA!

Does anyone market Extra Class study material that includes actual flash cards?

TIA!
13  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / 40 meter rfi using mzr700 sony mini-disc recorder on: May 10, 2003, 03:42:03 PM
I recently cured a 40 meter tvi problem by making a 8-10 turn coil in the coaxial feedline... diameter app. 10". It worked when a combination of a lowpass filter on the rig and highpass filter on the TV did not.

Good luck. Oh, and if you do try it, would you let me know if it was successful for you or not. I'm just curious.

Thanks!

15  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Looking for an inexpensive source for Split Beads. on: March 21, 2003, 04:50:26 PM
I need to purchase some type 43 split beads (with the plastic snap covers). I'm looking for suggestions for where some good places to buy them at reasonable prices. Oh, I need to purchase both some .25 and .50 inch diameter.

Thanks... James (N4EKZ)
