eHam Forums / Elmers / Recommended Antenna Tuner---

What is a good-quality 300 watt Antenna Tuner available in today's market? Palstar used to offer a nice one, but not any more. MFJ's offering is HUGE, but is there ONE that 'makes the grade'? There seems to be trend to go 'automatic', but I would prefer to stick with a 'manual' one--- Any and all advice/suggestions are welcome. Thanks. VE3GNU

My ICOM-740 (Ham band only) has a variable AGC control---a rotary knob. What is the optimum setting for CW operation? I would appreciate some guidance from those with more experience than me, with respect to this issue. Thanks in advance. VE3GNU

eHam Forums / Elmers / Need a small HF CW rig ---

In terms of a suitable size check out the Wilderness kits such as the NorCal 40A and the SST series. All are monobanders, highly portable, and are given some very high ratings on EHAM by their builders and operators. The Oak Hills Research OHR 100A series and the Ten Tec 1300 series are also great performers, but are not considered as 'portable' due to their size and weight. I have the 40A, OHR 100A for 20M, and the 1300 rig for 40M---all fun to build, and they work just fine. 73---VE3GNU

I have both the Wilderness NC 40A and the Ten Tec 1340. Both are great performers, but as far as getting 'the most radio for the money'---my vote goes for the Ten Tec---($99.00). The biggest difference---for me anyway, is the bandwidth: the 1340 has a 1kc bandwidth while the NC 40A has a 400hz one. Also, the 1340 has a built-in speaker. We are truly fortunate to have available such great QRP kits these days!

eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom 740 CW filter upgrade

Based on experience, what is the recommended CW crystal filter to replace the standard 300hz AF filter that comes supplied with the rig? An INRAD filter would be an option. Thanks in advance---Ernie VE3GNU
