Found the problem. I have 150 ft of RG-213 in two sections: 100 and 50 ft. The center conductor of the 50 ft was open. I connected the rig with just the 100 ft section and it worked just fine. Since the braid acts as the counter poise I had added the 50 ft to help reduce it.
I cut both PL259's off and the coax showed continuity. I checked the connectors and they were fine also (?). Maybe there is a break in the coax and it shows good and bad depending on how it's positioned. I'll connect my continuity tester to and twist and turn it to see how it reacts. I probably can do without it. I had no problem tuning with my Palstar.
