My UV-5RA can have split frequency memories. The Wouxun dual-bands are one of the only HT's (besides a few Yaesu's) that are truly 'SAT Friendly' --- in that each memory can be programmed for the differnt 'band' RX & TX frequencies. It would be nice to hear yourself in a true duplex world but technically not feasable in small HTs. I have the UV3 for SAT opererations, it works great; I've programmed 4-5 memories for each SAT to accommodate doppler effacts and when need the 10min PL timer activation. Now we just need more working FM SATs in orbit - we're down to only two SO-50 and the tempermental AO-27, with Fox-1 going into orbit next year. ISS repeater is not active and crew OPs are very hit-n-miss.

Hey guys, (need to update my call...now W0EA) I was also looking at these antennas. I have one of the MFJ-971 qrp portable tuners and I was wondering if I got a 1/2 wave wire and hooked it up (and tuned appropriately) if I'd have about the same luck as you are having? I would think that it's the same deal, just with a more efficient tuner?

My dad is worried about ligtning strikes in my tree mounted C Pole antenna (april 2004 QST). I figure if I just disconnect the coax every time I'm done using it (which I was already planning on doing), it would protect the house and the antenna/tree from lightning strike. Would I be incorrect in this assumption and if I am, what can I do to protect the antenna from this type of thing. Give me solid advice as I hope to show it to my dad to convince him that it will be A-OK. Thanks for your help guys and 73 de KC0PNH

We moved our school antenna onto the roof between 2 air conditioner units. It recieves a-gillion times better but we are unable to get out very well. The antenna pulls about a 4:1 SWR without tuning on 40 Meters so we have to tune it down but it still doesnt get out much. The people we call dont hear us. I think we'll figure something out better. As far as my antenna situation, on qrz somebody had the idea to just coil up the cable outside the window by my station and just pull it in when I want to operate. I think Ill try that. We'll see. Thanks for your help gentlemen and 73 de KC0PNH

I recently bought a new HF rig (Yaesu FT-890AT) and I'm trying to work on an antenna. I live in a house that my parents dont own anymore (we are moving) so we cant get an antenna out of the house anymore. Right now I'm taking the radio outside and operating when I can but Id love to have somethign inside. My shack is in my basement but I need to figure out a way to get out OK and tx marginally. Let me know what you all think!
Thanks and 73 de KC0PNH

Thanks again for all the help. Im going to go in later this week and talk to the principal and the "custodial engineers" and see if we can work something out. Ill have help from a few members of the club and hopefully we can figure out a place to put it. I know we wont have the feed line to make it back to the library and I also know that we will have to negotiate some sort of way to get the feedline into the library. Im sure we can wor something out. I do need to make a trip to the roof to see what I have to work with as well. As soon as I get an idea of what its going to look like, Ill let you all know. Thanks again and 73.

Mounted as in just set it on the roof? or is this using any form of support because we have no supports in this part of thie building so it would be stting on the again metal roof. Thanks. I also thought about that, I dont think it would be hard to get out just as long as we sealed it up well. Thanks again. I hope some others have more ideas.

I have recently just started a station in my school and unfortunately when we put up the antenna, we couldnt get much out of it. The antenna is located between the drop cieling and the roof (metal). Obviously you can tell that this configuration is about the worst case scinario. What Im hoping is that somebody has a good idea on how to get a non intrusive, OK radiating and OK recieving antenna for my school station. Some ideas already brought up is to try and get the steel gridder roof support system to tune up, the ceiling grid system, or maybe just a random wire with a decent tuner. Right now as far as a tuner goes, we have a believed to be broken down MFJ Deluxe II. The rig we're using is a Kenwood 140S so we dont have an swr meter either.
I really hope you can give us some ideas on solutions for this on ! Thanks a bunch in advance!

The laws surrounding getting payed for amateur service in my mind have become vague. For instance, I am planning on teaching an out of school class at the school sponsored by the school on the subject of ham radio and getting kids licensed. Because that basically quallifies me as a coach/teacher, they want to pay me. The way I look at it thats ok. But at the same time in the back of my head I sure hope Im not breaking any laws. What do you say? Is it against the law?

Actually I have heard Voice in CW portions of 40 Meters before. I didnt believe what I was hearing and I didnt have time to sit and copy the calls. They did seem like good amateurs doing something they knew was right but I was worried that they may be breaking the law. What do you guys think?

Now that you mention it, my antenna situation is rather, well modest and what you would call a major compromise. I have a full length homebrew 40 meter dipole on my wooden privacy fence, about 6 foot high. Im sure that effects things a bit. At the same time though, I have made a few contacts over 1000 miles from my qth on 100 watt voice. I should, theoretically get out better with cw, even with the antenna. hmm... I sure hope I can work cw even with my antenna, I know its been done by tons of people. THanks for your comments too, I appreciate it. 73 de KC0PNH

I just upgraded in late July to General class and Ive been excited about getting on and operating CW. So today I rigged up a homebrew key and went at it. When scanning around I think I heard only one qso at Extra class speeds on 40 Meters. When I go down to the voice portion of the band, I find that its a different story, every few Khz you run into a qso. Why is this? I think I know. In talking to the local hams, they all seem to have learned the code to pass the test, left it and now its gone. Whats worse is some are the Grandfathered classes having had to pass 20 wpm for Extra and have lost it. Why are we not using code? I dont know. All I really want to do is use it and get better at it. I only work 40 right now so if anybody would like to set up a sched on 40 cw, let me know. Thanks and 73 de KC0PNH

Thanks again for the replies. Unfortunately through looking for a decent higer powered HF rig, I can not find something for 200. It might be impossible, but that is the limit. There has got to be a way to do it. 250 or so is the lowest I can find. Right now somebody has got to tell me to "save up and wait till you have enough for a better rig" however I didnt upgrade to sit around with a general ticket on 2 meters. Im sick of borrowing things from people and having that huge responsibility to take care of them, especially when they are expensive rigs (Kenwood ts 940sat) I just need my own radio! Thanks agian and 73.
