1  eHam Forums / Youth / NAYN Website? on: January 28, 2006, 08:53:30 AM
I had one up for a while.  Right now it is down.  I'm working on a new one.  Feel free to check in every Friday at 2300 on 14.329, as I am now the regular net control.  We also have a new podcast that will be availible at the group.  The WWYN, that I ran, hasn't been run since this summer.  If you'd like to run it, just email me at 20meters@gmail.com, and I'll make you a moderator around the group, and you can take control of the net.

I now am condsidering putting an antenna on my new snowmobile. Wink

Well, I am going to use some Standard HX240 UHF HT's programmed to license free "DOT" frequencies, with a couple vox earbud headsets for an in helmet comm system on the snowmobile.

I am not in any emergency services, and I am 14, but I do have a bug catcher I made that I use for portable operations that I can also attach to my four wheeler, and I have a cable to go from the battery on the four wheeler to my Yaesu FT-817, so I can go drive to a higher elevation and use that, in the event that the power is out, or my GAP Titan is blown down.  That is my emergency preparedness.
4  eHam Forums / Elmers / RV-Digipan-laptop Lines on waterfall from AC on: October 20, 2005, 08:25:54 PM
My old computer did that.  So did my new one until I switched over to an LCD monitor.  Could it be the LCD inverter on your laptop?  Things still cause RFI, though, like the vacuum.  It causes my whole waterfall to go yellow with interference.  Can't see a thing.
5  eHam Forums / Youth / Kid Repeater Builders on: September 18, 2005, 10:15:18 AM
Well, the problem is the stuff is so rare.  I will probably pick one up this winter when I get back into paging again.  Right now it is still warm and there are engines to be worked on.
6  eHam Forums / Youth / Kid Repeater Builders on: September 06, 2005, 02:04:44 PM
No, but I have played around quite a bit with commercial radios and pagers.  If I have the money, I would do it.

With 2m you would have better luck, I would imagine, unless 6 is also popular in your area.
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / Any other use for this thing? on: June 16, 2005, 10:54:42 AM
Also, it was from a phone company.  It would work pretty nice for testing big chunks of coax to see if it has a fault or short in it.  Only problem is, the minimum it will go in distance (that I can figure out) is .3 miles.  It may be in meters, though.  I need to play with it some more.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Any other use for this thing? on: June 16, 2005, 10:51:39 AM
Well, it does have a digital display, too.  I am guessing what you do is set the cable length, then punch the appropriate button to make it calculate what you want.  It have I think 7 test clips, 3 are for splits and faults, and 4 are for opens.  It has an orange digital display.  I will take a pic of it.

Hi,
Over a year ago I got for free a Communications Technology Open and Split Fault Locator model C-4910G.  I pulled the thing out today again (it is built into a gray fiberglass (?) toolbox) and powered it up from a bench supply.  I kind of get how the thing works (it has a keypad and about 5 pushbuttons).  But, it says that it was US West, and I don't happen to have any large lengths (.3 miles or more) of phone line, especially older stuff (the display alsmost looks to be Nixie tube, but I took it apart and does not appear to be).  Any manuals or any info on the thing would be greatly appreciated.  I may take a picture and upload it to my site and post a link here so you can take a look at the thing.  It is a pretty neat thing.  I wonder how many people own a surplus US West open and split fault locator? Wink

Thanks,
Devan, KC0KBH
11  eHam Forums / Elmers / Trying this again... on: June 02, 2005, 06:45:20 PM
Last week I was supposed to run the North American Youth Net "Schools Out" net special.  A big problem came up, and I couldn't run it.  So, this week I am trying it again.  It will be on 14.329 MHz at 2300z on 6/3.  Anyone, of any age is welcome to join, including people operating 3rd party under the control of a control op.  For more info, check out groups.yahoo.com/group/nayn.  I hope to see (or hear) you there!

Yes, please check out those nets.  I run the WWYN, and would love to have more check ins, and some more activity around the yahoo group.  BTW, I have a Icom IC-765 that I got for $500 last summer, and am loving it!
13  eHam Forums / Digital / POCSAG Pager Data on: April 12, 2005, 04:44:06 PM
Do it!  Tell me how it goes!  I am playing with pocsag at the moment.
14  eHam Forums / Elmers / Does anyone own an Itronix XC-6250 laptop? on: February 15, 2005, 06:45:13 PM
Yes, they are trustable.  Get the 6250 pro.
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / cleaning HF rigs up on: January 23, 2005, 07:20:26 AM
That works really good for cleaning up a chainsaw.  All of our STIHL's around here we clean off with compressed air.  It really gets the oily sawdust out of the recoil housing, chain side cover, etc.
