1  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: SB-104 VFO/Filter Circuit Board on: May 26, 2012, 04:43:58 PM
Turns out I had to adjust the coils on the HFO board and now it is working.  Not sure about the other board, but it works.
2  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: SB-104 VFO/Filter Circuit Board on: May 25, 2012, 07:02:41 AM
No, I don't think that is it. The description of the circuit says that the board acts as an automatic switch to increase the vfo signal injection to the premix circuits on the 28.0 to 29.5 Mhz bands.

In the 29.5 band setting, basically the vfo is not functioning at all.  The unit was owned by a ham previously to me, so I doubt they would have modified it for CB, but who knows.  Everything else on the unit seems to be functioning correctly.

It was service by a Heathkit service center in 1977.  I know they usually put all of the available mods on a unit that was in for repair when they got it, but I can't find any official mods on that circuit board that would have removed those parts.

Another person has told me that the three 85-1516-1 boards he has all have those parts fully populated.
3  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / SB-104 VFO/Filter Circuit Board on: May 24, 2012, 12:46:19 PM
I have a SB-104 that has a vfo issue on the 29.5 band switch setting. On all
the other settings the vfo works fine and the display is correct.

On the 29.5 setting, I just get the 26,60x.x display depending on the LSB/USB/CW
setting.

That tells me that I am not getting the premix signal. So I take a look at the
VFO/Filter Circuit Board (85-1516-1) and it is missing all of the diodes and the
transistor. Looks like they were never installed, but I can't be sure.

So I have two questions:

1. I looked through all the errata pages on the web of heathkit mods and can't
find anything that would be done this way, with the exception of the move to the
85-1516-2 board which removes some resistors. Is this a mod I am just not
finding?

2. Would this possibly be the cause of the problem I am seeing with the rig, or
am I just chasing my tail?

Any help would be appreciated.

They moved their support forum to http://forums.hrdsoftwarellc.com/

They had a post on there yesterday stating that they hoped to get out version 5.1 by the end of the year.

Anybody have an instruction sheet for a Calrad 65-286?

I assume you have to connect it to a transmitter with a known power output to adjust the power reading, but I was hoping to use it to verify my MFJ-962D

Had a nasty one come in this week.  It started with the "Windows Recovery" malware, which we cleaned off with no problem.

But apparently, that one downloaded another one.  When we got the initial malware cleaned, after about 15 minutes of being up, a Internet Explorer session would start using the -Embeded option.  You couldn't see it running unless you ran process explorer.  It would then go to some site that had audio ads.  All of a sudden your pc would start talking to you.

I think we have it cleaned up now, but I have it on the bench watching it just to be sure.

Yes, I remember the first time I had to remove a virus.  Spent about 8 hours on it.  Don't remember which one it was, but it was a boot sector virus.  At that time Norton AV had just come out, so no one was running anything on their machines.  I had to remove it myself, no tools.

This week we had a 6 year old laptop and a 6 month old netbook come in from the same client.  He went to a website and infected the laptop, then went back to it with the netbook.  Go figure.  Anyway the netbook took about 15 minutes to clean.  The scans on the old laptop took 6 hours.  Just goes to prove your point that the new faster machines take less to clean up.

The latest "Windows Recovery" Malware can be a real bear to get rid of.  I don't know if it's different variants or how far it progresses, but on some of them it is not just marking files as hidden, it is moving them or deleting them.

Yes, we have a pretty good procedure setup for virus removal.  I took a look at our tickets and over the last 2 years, we have had just shy of 400 machines that we had to remove malware/virus's from.  Out of those we only had to reload 4 machines.  That is a pretty good track record.  It usually only takes less than an hour of tech time to run through the procedure.

About 2 months ago, one came in and it had some malware that encrypted all word, excel and other common files.  We of course didn't have the cipher, so it was better to just reload and restore from a backup.

The current hot one is the "Windows Recovery" malware that changes all the common files in the programs directory to hidden.  Took an hour or two on the first one to come up with the recovery procedure.

We are always learning new ways to work on and prevent the infections, but I know better to say that I will always be able to remove a virus on a PC.

It's not a matter of accepting defeat or not.  When our billing rate is $85.00 an hour for a tech, at some point we have to do a cost/benefit analysis for the client.  If it takes and hour or two to reinstall, but it takes 4 hours to track down the problem, the client is going to take the former, not the later.
10  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Can CI-V on 706MK11G go bad? on: May 19, 2011, 06:09:36 AM
Try to delete the driver for the CI-V Cable and reinstall.  But yes it is electronic so the port could go bad.

We have cloned hard drives for awhile. Mainly for replacements.  If we have a client that has a drive in the pre-stages of failure, we grab it and make a clone of it.  Some of our clients have line of business software installed that can take 2 - 3 hours to install, so it saves us a lot of setup time.

We use a product called HDclone.  We have a technicians license for it so we can use it on any number of machines.  A lot of people don't realize that Norton Ghost is usually licensed on a per machine basis or in units. Being in the business, we have to be sticklers about licensing issues.

Cloning doesn't always work and yes sometimes you have to do a clean install.  It will transfer over any problems, just not the bad clusters.  Sometimes if you have a machine with a lot of problems you are better off doing a reinstall, it is kind of an art to figure out when to cut your loses and start over.

I got busy with work, so I sent it to Mike N1EQ to get it fixed.  We will see what he finds.
13  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Windows 7 SP1 on: May 11, 2011, 10:50:23 AM
We recommended Trend Micro for over a decade.  Then in the last few years it got to be resource intensive and didn't do as good of a job stopping Malware.  We then switched to AVG and used it for the last few years.  It was fine at first, but the last year it got to where it wasn't stopping anything.

Although it was good for our bottom line, we cleaned a lot of PC's, it was not good for our reputation.  So we went back to Trend for awhile.

Then we started using Vipre.  We have moved everyone over to it now.  It cleans stuff that the others couldn't even touch.  It used very little resources.  I believe it is about 15mb of ram for the background processes.  Best of all the tech support is based in the United States.  We hardly ever get put on hold and when we do it has been for 5 minutes or less.

I will put it on the bench today and test the IC151 to see were we are.  Thanks for the input.

I have a latter model 746Pro Serial #0207690 that came up today with no TX.  I haven't put it on the oscilloscope yet, but it sounds like the typical IC151 gone bad.

First question, since it is a latter model that they supposedly fixed, what mods should I need do to it while I replace the IC151?

Second, does anyone have a current mouser or Digikey part number for the IC151?  Or do I just need to order it from Icom?
Since your rig is a very late-production unit, IC151 is less likely to be the problem. I would suspect the pre-driver FET, Q1 on the PA Unit (2SK2973). And if resistor R3 is 4.7-ohm, I would change it to 10-ohm to help prevent another failure.

No, we haven't had much for lightning yet this year.  I did have a Astron RM-50a pop a fuse about a month ago.  I swapped it with a RM-35.

Allen,

Just out of curiosity - did you had any nearby thunderstorm when your IC151 fried up?
My Pro3-s IC151 died when I operated during nearby thunderstorm. My friend lost his IC151 last summer under similar circumstances.

Just wondering if there are other causes of IC151 death or is it only high voltage (induced by not-too-far lightning) coming down from antenna.
