46  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 5W0M is QRV on: April 15, 2013, 11:36:29 PM
They were really working hard to make contacts on 60 meters last night around 0600.  Apparently they are only authorized to use CW so they were tranmitting on 5305.5 and listening on the CW center channel freq of 5405.0 for US callers.  Quite loud even to the east coast.

Heard several US stations call 5W0M on 5305.5 CW which is illegal.

I saw the trailer a few weeks ago. It sounded awful! Most new films have fairly high IMDB ratings that gradually decline. Yet, The Numbers Station is already rated a dismal 5.7 (out of 10) after 91 votes.

The Numbers Station IMDB rating has now fallen to 5.3 based on 349 votes.

48  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Multi-Band HF Vertical Tips? All Welcomed! on: April 12, 2013, 09:41:06 AM

Little story. I bought a Butternut HF6V several years back. I installed it on a Saturday morning and began laying 60-foot long radials but it began to rain. I got 8 radials down before having to give up to seek shelter. I used the vertical for the next week and was disappointed with its performance on transmit.

Didn't N6LF's extensive testing of verticals find that more radials weren't necessarily better in the case of going up to 8 radials? He suggested that a field of 8 radials was actually worse than say 4. That was one of the odder things his tests discovered about radials.

Welcome Gary.

Aside from being more compact, do FSL antennas offer other advantages over that traditional wire loop which is much lighter, cheaper and easier to build?

Here is another place to get one:  http://www.kightradio.com/QRP-HF-Radios_c_87.html Looks like they will have a 20 watt model out soon.

But WD8KTQ said:
"There is another place supposedly selling it, Kight Radio. They do not return emails and have a non working phone number."

"A local ham, at the beach on O'ahu, uses half wave long verticals, with a matching network at the base for the very high impedance. He just uses a ground stake into the sand, no radials at all. He gets out *very* well."

Hope no one, especially a kid in a swimming suit,  comes in contact with that 1/2 wave vertical. Very dangerous.

There is an Hawaiian station who has shown up on 60 meters running 50 watts to a 90' wire vertical 50' from the Pacific. Top was supported by a palm tree. Lord was he LOUD!  I think he just used a small ground rod.

He was many, many dB louder than any other KH6 I've heard on 60.

"Any secrets to picking up European LW in North America?"

It looks like you're in VE5-land so Europe longwave may be tough. Wintertime around European sunrise is often a good time. Was surprised to hear France Inter on 162 kHz very nicely a few night ago around 0300z which is quite early. There have been a few nights lately where I haven't been able to hear the longwave broadcasters at all.

A good approach might be to plant your receiver on 162 KHz from 0300z until 0600z. The German station (which transmits in French language) on 183 is sometimes nearly as loud.

Try taking your Grundig for a car ride to see if it works better in different and quieter locations. You certainly should hear lots of aircraft beacons (not just local ones) most nights. I'm not a NDB chaser but I did happen upon one a few months ago from Prince Edward Island.

Actually one new TV show is tied with Splash for worst IMDB TV rating of 2013 and makes Radio Pyongyang look like Madmen or Boardwalk Empire.

Immortalized (AMC)

"Each week, the program pits two taxidermists against each other as they create projects based on the same theme. A panel of judges selects the winner."

Way off topic, but perhaps The Numbers Station might not seem so bad if you had been subjected to that new TV show Splash, which debuted in the US last week.

Spash features celebrities diving into a swimming pool (that's about it!). I tuned in just as comic Louie Anderson was entering the water from the high board!

I turned on the computer specifically to check its IMDB rating: 2.3 out of 10. Perhaps a new low! The reviews are hilarious.

What's coming next from Hollywoodland:  WWV...The Movie ?

You can listen to some of that range for yourself for free:
http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,87234.0.html

DC to 500 KHz covers a ton of stuff:

<15 KHz  earth sound things
11-59 KHz   submarine digital communications. Digital but often really loud.
60 KHz WWVB (digital time/frequency)
160-200 European Longwave AM broadcast... can be heard in most of the U.S. sometimes
285-325 KHZ Differential GPS
200-529 KHz Nondirectional air beacons (NDBs)
472-478 Experimentally licensed hams on various modes. CW, PSK others
506-7 KHz More ham
518 Navtex ship weather beacons
530 Highway Info stations

I don't know of any two way communication between ships still being done in the 500 KHz range. Almost everything is now digital. Hams have been known to use SSB on longwave but very rarely.

Not recommended for those who are not a good judge of character or gullible!

I've concluded that a sliver of our species should never conduct business online. Born suckers.

Was watching the Dr Phil Show recently (certainly not my regular practice) where he was interviewing  women who had lost their savings to "internet boy friends" overseas.

Each victim was warned by family, friends and even their bank that it was a scam. These women were attractive, not desperate for companionship, and educated.

They were just wired up all wrong!

"Check and verify the sellers name, address and phone number on the internet.  There are several sites you can use to do so although you have to pay a fee.  "

I've been checking out customers online since the mid-90s and never paid a cent for research.

Photo of "a" radio doesn't prove a thing. Ask him to put something specific in the shot.

BTW, Google street view is a valuable FREE tool. If you're selling something, you want to see that it's going to a home (preferably with an antenna outside)  and not some trans-shipper warehouse in a port city.

I'd worry if Street View or one of those many real estate websites showed the buyer or seller of, say,  a costly IC-7800 lived in a mobile home or a housing project.

Yes, smell test stuff.  Web commerce is actually quite safe... if you do your homework and follow a few simple rules.

"seller has provided a phone number"

I'd ignore that number and call him at his number in the phone book or 411. Assuming it's listed.

Quote
"I may call him and ask him to send me a picture of the radio powered on or possibly on and receiving a signal. "

I can find a picture of almost any radio in minutes with Google's Image Search. Tell him to put his QSL in front of the radio in the snap shot or something else that's distinctive (say two pens) to prove the image is of his specific radio, and is a current picture.

By all means speak with him. Listen for an accent. The hard-to-master English language is a wonderful tool for revealing overseas scams.

Do you know where I can get a knob upgrade kit?

SHINY knob upgrade kit for Kenwood hybrids made (and now discontinued)  by K4EAA.

He also makes a kit to convert old Kenwood hybrids to all-upper case panel lettering.

Convert that old Kenwood to a KENWOOD
