Having both the VX-150 and the FT-60, I found that I can use the FNB-83 battery pack and the VAC-370 desktop rapid charger with the VX-150 with no problems. Another consideration is using the FBA-25A and your choice of alkaline batteries. The FNB-83 battery pack provides a longer run time than the stock VX-150 battery pack.

eHam Forums / Misc / Replacement for ICOM 746Pro?

Dan,
you didn't say if you would consider a used radio. I've owed the 746 (non-Pro) for 6 years now with no problems at all. But, I would also consider other radios from the past as well.

Dan,
have you considered going QRP/SSB on 6m & 2m? At least for me, I find using my Yaesu FT-290RII 2m 2w all mode radio a lot more FUN then my HT.

eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Par-omni -Stacked or not?

Please check out www.KB6KQ.com 6m & 2m antennas. I've been using the Par 2m stacked omni for 5 years. It's a decent antenna, but the SWR goes off scale when it rains. I've never had a problem with KB6KQ's 6m or 2m omni in rain and/or snow.

Thanks for all the replies, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a software program(s) that will allow me to send email from point A to Point B (regardless of band/frequency) and WITHOUT any usage or interface of the Internet. Thank you.

Can WinLink 2000 be used between two hams without the Internet? If not, is there any Email exchange program that can be used without the Internet between two or more stations?

Thanks for the info, but I'm looking for a program that would allow for email exchange between hams without the use of the Internet.

Sometimes IE doesn't work well, or at all. Try another simple browzer from www.browzar.com . Whenever IE gives me problems, I fireup Browzar, and make the connection everytime (unless the site is down for maintenance).

I would definitely keep the 275A! As much as I like my Icom 746 (which I've been using for over 6 years now), I can still hear better 2m on my 275H. There's certainly a LOT of older used radios to consider as well depending on your budget. I've also owned the 706MKIIG until it lost power on HF/6m and I sold it (after 4 months of use).

For backup/emergency power, I've been using an APC brand UPS (battery backup) SU1000 model. It powers the Icom 746 and other devices (lights, computers, etc). Everything is in one box, and it also protects from AC line voltage spikes and brownouts.

I've seen the original battery pack selling for as little as $35 at local Hamfests. I agree that there's no reason why you can't use rechargeables in the FBA-25 battery pack, though I recharge them using the QuickCharger from www.ccrane.com ($39.95).
