Yes, some UPS units do produce RF noise. But, over the last 10 years that I've used APC brand units 700VA or higher, I've never had a problem with UPS RF noise. Like all things new, some units can be defective out of the box. I still stand by my earlier suggestion with using an APC brand UPS (700VA or higher for true sine wave output) for backup power. In fact, I now run my Icom 746 via solar power going into the UPS. George ...

Like the VX-150 I also own, I'm happy with the FT-60R. It's easy to program, has great battery life, and so far, everyone has told me the audio sounds great. I did replace the stock antenna with a Comet SMA-3. George ...

If you use an APC brand UPS with a rating of 700VA or higher (true sine wave output), you'll have absolutely no problems. I use the APC model SU1000NET with both an Icom 746 and 275H and the several other devices. It also provides protection against brown outs and AC line noise. George ...

Has anyone seen a GPS unit that will read out directly Amateur Radio grid squares? In other words, if I'm in EN61 or EN50, the GPS unit will directly provide that info. Thank you.

To answer your specific question, please check out the publication "Secondary Market Amateur Radio Technical Pricing Survey" by Dave Goodman, KG6JTB, copyright 2002. It's a very good starting point to help you determine prices for radios in conditions from Bad to Mint. Cost was $12.00 .

For the last few years I've been using a Yaesu FT-290RII all mode with a KB6KQ.com horizontal loop for both mobile and portable operations. Compared to my HT's, the FT-290RII is an older fun radio to use. Just this past weekend, I made several contacts on 2 watts SSB across lake Michigan from Bridgman, MI to West Bend, WI; a distance of about 130 miles.

Instead of an HT, please consider an older All Mode 2m radio like the Yaesu FT-290RII. It can be a base or mobile with 25 watts or an portable QRP radio with 2.5 watts. It's just a bit larger then an HT, but I find using it a lot more FUN then the several HT's I now own.

Has anyone used a website that would let you calculate the airmile distance between to specific cities? For example, I'm looking to find the airmile distance (not driving distance like most sites I've seen so far) between Bridgman, MI and West End, WI. In other words, I can input ANY two city/state points, and get airmile distance. Any help would be appreciated.

It might be that you need to listen some more, especially on SSB. There's plenty of SSB nets here in the Chicago area (EN61) and I hear someone all the time.
