1  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Still No Ammo on: April 27, 2013, 08:00:41 AM
I'm just a city dweller without an arsenal because there's just no place around here to use it,
but I've still got my Daisy BB gun, and I've managed to hoard 2400 Daisy BB's just in case!

2  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Why not more women in ham radio? on: March 28, 2013, 07:30:45 AM
I'm making an educated guess that the percentage of women Hams
and the percentage of women Hunters would be quite similar stats.

3  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: A question of trees on: March 17, 2013, 12:51:28 PM
My QTH is on a small city lot in an old neighborhood, so we have lots of trees (old and new).
A few years ago I tried working the FM birds with my mini dual HT when they were overhead.
I could full quiet SO-50 and AO-27 with 140 milliwatts and the factory rubberduck antenna.
My rig was the "Standard" model# C508A, and my secret to success was to stand on the round
metal manhole cover (city sewerage) that's in the middle of the road in front of my house.

4  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Too much info on PSK31?? on: October 23, 2012, 03:30:46 PM
I've been a casual PSK31 operator for exactly four years this month, and I don't
like the canned "Brag" macro files. But, conversely, I'm appalled at some of the
really personal info that folks type about freehand to complete strangers.
5  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-450/450AT 60 meter upgrade software on: October 04, 2012, 05:54:57 PM
As the popular saying goes "I've been there and I've done that". I did a full reset (Home/RCL/Power)
prior to upgrading from the old (0194) firmware to the new (0228) firmware. Then I did another full
reset (Home/RCL/Power) after the new (0228) firmware was successfully installed. Then I manually
reentered all of my CW mode customizations in VFO A and all of my Digital mode customizations in
VFO B before I began my bench testing.

6  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-450/450AT 60 meter upgrade software on: October 04, 2012, 01:51:34 PM
Bug Report# 1:
                    I've given the new FT-450/FT-450AT (0228) firmware
a fairly extensive workout into an MFJ# 260C dummy.

The only obvious problem that I've encountered is that
it always transmits 100 watts on 6 meters regardless
of the power/mode that you've selected.

7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-450/450AT 60 meter upgrade software on: October 03, 2012, 05:10:39 PM
After fighting Murphy's Law for a couple of hours, I've successfully installed
the latest (0228) firmware on my ancient Yaesu FT-450AT rig. I haven't as
yet actually used the rig since the upgrade, but it did power up OK as 0228.

note: my ancient Yaesu FT-450AT was manufactured April of 2007 in Japan.

            73 and good luck,
                                     Bob

8  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: WIFI Problem on: September 05, 2012, 06:54:15 PM
I've had Verizon's Westell model# 7500 DSL wireless router installed for several years downstairs
next to my desktop, and my laptop installed for several years upstairs on my radio desk. The physical
location of the downstairs router is fixed and the upstairs laptop is fixed, and their 2.4 Ghz signal paths
are approximately 12 feet line of sight point-to-point.

Questions: Why does the router signal strength change (good, very good, excellent)?
Why does a good signal = 36.0 Mbps and an excellent signal = 54.0 Mbps?

9  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Kenwood TH-215a won't power up on: July 21, 2012, 06:04:58 PM
About 13 years ago, my Kenwood TH-215a decided that it won't power up from
either a fully charged factory (PB-2) Battery or from the factory Cigarette lighter.
Today, A Ham buddy of mine showed up at an Antenna raising party with his
Kenwood TH-215a that still powers up, and now I've got the urge to repair mine.

note: I'm thinking that maybe it needs that little internal battery replaced, but
any other repair suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

10  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Alinco DX-70T sticky transmit relay on: July 15, 2012, 05:14:27 AM
OM's, thanks for the replies to my transmit relay problem,
and maybe it fixed itself at least temporarily. How? I tried
operating the rig in CW mode (straight key/semi-breakin),
and that cleaned the relay. The relay doesn't stick anymore
when I'm operating Phone with the factory (EMS-42) mike.
11  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Alinco DX-70T sticky transmit relay on: July 12, 2012, 07:15:24 AM
My 17 year old Alinco DX-70T rig just developed a sticky transmit relay problem
when keying it with the factory (EMS-42) microphone. I took the microphone apart
and spray cleaned that little PTT micro switch, but that didn't fix the problem. I can
actually hear the transmit relay that is inside the radio sticking and then keying up.

   Question:

If I take the covers off the radio, can I get access to that transmit relay to spray it?
12  eHam Forums / MARS / RE: MARS patches for Active Duty Servicemembers in Afghanistan on: May 10, 2012, 07:30:32 AM
I've been a MARS member since the first Gulf War, and all of the traditional
MARS activities (i.e. Phone patches, MARSgrams, Guarding tactical freq's)
came to a screeching halt during the Bosnian War. Why? Because that's
when the US Military switched over the bulk of their comm's from HF radio
links to Satellite radio links.

13  eHam Forums / SWL (Shortwave Listening) / RE: What was your first shortwave radio? on: May 08, 2012, 08:21:35 AM
The first SW radio that I used was my parent's Zenith with the round dial face and the wooden cabinet.

The first SW radio that I bought was a National SW-54 from a Ham who worked with my older brother.

14  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Mobile 2 Meter 1/4 Wave Whips Have High SWR but 5/8 Checks Fine? on: May 04, 2012, 02:31:29 PM
I had a situation like this about 30 years ago with a 2 meter 1/4 wave magmount
on roof of a '77 Honda Civic. Good SWR for months until the coax got damaged in
the car door, so I cut off the 4 foot bad section of coax, then soldered new PL-259.

note: apparently the cut off coax was too short and had a weird harmonic length?
15  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: Yaesu bails on FT450/FT450AT Owners on: March 22, 2012, 10:49:30 AM
Wow! As a loyal Yaesu owner/customer since 1987, I'm definitely feeling like an orphan.
Like alot of other Yaesu FT-450/FT-450AT owners, I've been waiting for new firmware!!!
Maybe all of us loyal Yaesu customers should ban together and start an "Occupy Yaesu"?
