76  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / 2 meter amp PA transistor help on: September 15, 2011, 09:35:03 PM
Hi all,

I have a friend that has had an ongoing issue finding replacement transistors for the Mirage B1016 2 meter amp. I pointed him to RF parts, but several hundred bucks later no joy, they blow out of the box, 1 of 3 works but no where near the gain needed. The OEM PN is Motorola PN SRF2838.

My research indicate they are NPN EPITAXIAL PLANAR TYPE VHF power transistors. Appears that Toshiba 2sc2782 are similar but not quite there.

I cant find a Motorola to save my soul, nor a data sheet. Has anyone run into this issue? I have a contact willing to make them for us if we can come up with the data sheet for the original Motorola.

My friend has 2 of these amps needing these, and I would imagine there are more out there.

Any suggestions, data sheets or help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a VX-150, awesome little HT. With a little better antenna they work very well.

The FT-270 is very similar..either would do the trick on the trail. Dual band is nice feature to have for repeaters... if you need them.

Good luck on your exam. Go for General or Extra asap. Its awesome to work the world portable as well. Check the FT-817ND Smiley

That is a tough one, I wonder if you could elevate a butternut vertical and run ground radials isolated and get by? Let us know what you decide, a tower is least compromise option but understand your situation.

73 n good luck

Very good read!

I would recommend this as well, esp the new ops. Its great to be patient with new comers. Some are so grumpy when they make a simple mistake in a pile up.

Thanks Tisha

81  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: dentron super tuner..knob settings on: August 18, 2011, 10:01:09 AM
Hi Jeff,

I have a Super Tuner Plus, great lil box when I need it.

Just tune at lowest letter setting for the band your on.  I use a (old guy) cheat sheet. When I got it I noted the settings for the bottom, mid and top of each band, then put the settings on a spread sheet and laminated it. You will need a swr meter to use with it to determine the correct settings.

The manual is at BAMA here: http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/dentron/16010at/

Enjoy!

82  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: What's the wattage of this resistor? on: August 16, 2011, 06:54:44 AM
Hi Mike,

Yep those are pretty old.

RN20s are fixed film circa 1952; 1/2 watt 350 volts Mil spec type

X is the temp coefficient = 0.05

4993 = 499 + 3 zeros so your right on value.

The 6640 is like he other gent said week 40 of 1966, lets see, I was in the fourth grade hihi.

F is the resistance tolerance.  Heres a link to the old spec, that was fun! Grin

Agreed, you should be able to tune just fine with ladder line and a Balun. I have even used a short section of ladder (9 feet) and a home brew air balun to match my loop. Not the best but works.

Another consideration. something like a DX-CC dipole. It will tune 80-40-20-15-10 into coax. I have one I got from a garage sale and use it for field day. Its 82 feet long total. Or you could make similar multi fed di-pole.

Best of luck, no worries, you will have fun. I used mine on vaca at a lake in Michigan a couple weeks back, 100 watts on an old TS-430 and did 12 country's and lots of US. 20 and 40 were open  Grin

Hope to hear you soon!

Hi,

I have had the non HP version for years.  Its not a bad little rig for 10, little different to tune but no biggie. All it does is 10 though  Undecided

If you looking to buy a new rig though, you may want to consider saving up your bucks and going for a small HF rig like a FT-857 or a 706MKII. That will give you room to grow, might even find a deal used if your lucky!

86  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Ameritron Power switch dimensions on: August 10, 2011, 12:28:05 PM
Hi all,

My time was up, and the power switch went on my 811H.  I know this is a common issue.

I see its a 20 amp 125 volt. I'm not home so I cant get the panel mount dimensions for a replacement. I have a friend putting in an order tonight, if someone can help me out with the snap in dims I can order a few. I assume they are solder lug. There are several standard sizes but ?? : )

Thanks

I agree with Tom.

If you dont have a dummy load, start with the rig (no autotune), then tuner and antenna. See what the swr is straight thru the tuner.

I'll bet you have a bad jumper or something like that.

Sounds strange, something going on.

Have you checked the antenna direct from rig on 10 with the amp out of line? Are you using a tuner? Big enough to handle the power?

Make sure your jumpers are good and maybe make sure the correct wire is clipped again.

Mine was fine oput of the box as well.

I agree with the others, could be anything from a CB balcony antenna (good fishing rod) or a 2 or 440 ... http://www.copper.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=32_33&products_id=1440

Elevate it on a pole and throw  it on analyser, you will know what bands it will work on for sure.

90  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: suspending a dipole from a tree on: July 16, 2011, 10:16:44 PM
Easy,

Sling shot, fishing line, weight like a socket, you will need two ropes for each side, one for the pulley and the other to route the second rope to suspend the wire. You said caged di-pole for multi-band? Do you mean a fan separated? Multi-band different wire lengths?

Anyhow, You pull rope for the pulley (clothes line plastic) on the first rope , pull it up with the fishing line over the high point on the tree, thread the 2nd rope the the pulley and pull it up..repeat.

Some use weights, I just use pulleys and a little slack. The tree moves and rolls over the pulley in the wind.

Just figure out what will work for you.  I have a 544 foot look suspended on 8 pulleys, I can move the feed point around pretty easy Smiley 2 di-poles and an inverted L same method.

Email me direct if you need any help, its easy!
