I'm on CW 7.114 and thereabouts almost every night and make lots of contacts. And I spend the majority of my time on 40m which is very active on phone and cw. 40 meters is far from dead. In fact, it's the most active band.

eHam Forums / CW / Autek Research MK-1 Message Memory CMOS Keyer

I found one of these in an antiques shop and grabbed it. Anyone here happen to have a copy of the manual? This keyer was made in 1976 or so. I thought I could get the original owner's call sign from the memory, but it's just really bad random code recorded in there. This would be a cool keyer to use with older equipment.
Thanks

eHam Forums / Misc / Yaesu 800SA won't turn
|
on: October 31, 2012, 06:10:23 PM

I have a three month old Yaesu 800SA rotor up on the tower that suddenly won't turn. My antenna spun on the mast and I went up and straightened it out. I turned the rotor to go up a second time to put some washers in the U clamps and when I got back into the shack, my rotor wouldn't turn. I've checked everything...all the connections and wires. All is good there. The controller lights up and is connected, but when I push the buttons, the needle won't turn and the rotor is motionless.
Ideas? Could it be the brake stuck? I've never owned one of these before and I'm not familiar with them having any problems with that. I really....really don't want to pull the rotor from the top of the tower and send it and the controller to Yaesu. Uggh. That would suck.
Is there anything I can try on the tower or in the shack to test or troubleshoot?
Thanks

I guarantee you'all that I will not give up on getting into a sat and will not sell it until I do. I actually just got a 10 element 70cm Diamond yagi in the mail. I'm waiting on brackets for it and then it will go on the array.

My radio went back to Yaesu for some warranty calibration on the VFO. It's like 0.20 off of zero.
When I get it back, I might sell. It has: Inrad 2100hz 455khz 8-pole Crystal SSB and 400hz 455khz CW filters, custom amplifier cables, Inrad Vox Box, etc. The radio is a hot rod, so it will sell for more than the normal 847 (if I sell it). Just a thought. I haven't decided yet, or given up on the satellite thing yet.

No voice?
That's strange. Usually if you can hear your own dits or whistle to find yourself, you can tune in your voice without any difficulty.
435.250 LSB up, and 145.900 LSB down is the middle of the passband, so that sounds right.
Once you heard you whistle, what did you try to say? I know is sounds silly, but I'll keep repeating "test, test, test" and tuning until I can actually understand what I'm saying.
Well, at least you're getting close.......
Well, I said "four" a few times...nothing. Then my call...nothing. Then more tuning with my whistle. Then my call...nothing. I adjusted the wattage but got nowhere. My new 70cm yagi is due in tomorrow. Maybe that will make a difference, but I am also sending my rig back to Yaesu for some warranty work and for them to calibrate my VFO so it doesn't ghost spin. Will be on my 897 for a while until the 847 gets back to me. You should get on 40 with me one of these days so we can chat.

I tried to get into HAMSAT again today with no luck. I can hear my whistle and tune it in, but I cannot hear my voice coming through the sat. 435.225 LSB and 145.900 USB (VFO) RIGHT? My whistle came through at 145.898/435.254. No voice.

Just curious, but why did you throw in the towel on SatPC?
Once you understand the setup, it's rock-solid and easy to make changes in.
And other than setting up your "Observer" Lat/Lon and time zone, and getting fresh Keps, it works "right outta the box".
I tried the demo version... I didn't really throw in the towel, I just liked the maps better in Nova...the SatPC was a goofy cartoon map, while Nova is a nice looking sat from space look. I'll go look at it again. I'm starting to think that I don't care about the look, as long as it works right. By the way...my 847 is going back to Yaesu on the 90 day warranty from the work they did a month ago. My VFO and the other stuff they fixed with new parts need to be looked at again.

yeah, I can't get this Nova program to work right no matter how hard I try. All the settings are right. If I don't get into the HAMSAT next time it flies over my head, I'm done with that too. I'll go back to CW. That's easier.

It also doesn't help when Nova says SaudiSAT 1C is in range, but AMSAT says it's over Africa. WTF? Ridiculous. I'll try that with VO-52..thanks Without you here I'd be bashing this sat radio in with a hammer by now.

OK, take a deep breath, calm down, and approach it methodically.
WHICH bird are you trying to use?
FM or Linear? The approaches are a bit different.
HAMSAT. USB downlink, LSB Uplink. Let me first get the tracking of those pairs right. My radio will track as I VFO. It's the same radio you have. What frequencies should I enter directly into each vfo before I push track? I hear everyone great, but I cannot hear myself at all with sometimes hearing myself way off frequency or messed up. I turned the wattage down, but so far I have had no luck even hearing myself now. Maddening! I gave up on SATPc32 and paid for NOVA since it's the one I've been using. It's giving me all sorts of trouble with access and doesn't automatically track my SAT's frequency pairs.

Frustrating!!!! I cannot get into this satellite. I hear people, but I can't get into it!! I think my tracking and frequency pairs must be messed up. I don't know. I'm about to throw this radio across the room.

I wasn't sure why you mentioned the SteppIR the way you did, but I guess I understand now. Having your rig under PC control to do the tuning is a great thing, especially with the linear birds, and using it to control the rotor is equally "nice". Is it required? No, but it sure makes things easier. It can be quite frustrating to tune the radio, move the antenna, log the contact, AND try to have a QSO with someone. Well, at least for me! I think Patrick, WD9EWK, runs a "Full Manual" station, and he does extremely well. I tend to get kinda all crossed-up....... Good points.... I guess it's more of a question of resources with the purchase of that SteppIR. The SAT station upgrades and all that will have to wait a while. What is your take on eggbeaters? I wouldn't have to rotate those...takes one more thing out of the process.
