eHam Forums / Amplifiers / 3-500Z Tubes for Drake L-4B

I've had this amp for a while now. Just getting around to getting it online. Have it all hooked up correctly. But don't seem to be getting anything out of the Amp. (no power out the back side.)(Yes, I have it going in) I have been through a ton of trouble shooting with it. Can't seem to find anything obvous that is wrong. I am wondering about the tubes. They glow when the unit is on. I know that does not mean that they work. I do have 1 extra tube that has never been used and is still in its original packaging. Is there any way I can test the tubes that are currently in the unit to see if they are. or one of them is bad?? If there is a way how do you do it?? Bob W8RID

Dick:
When I have the SSB on, PLATE VOLTAGE selected the plate voltage reads 2600. When I key up the unit I get the relay to engauge but the PLATE AMPERES reads ZERO. The needle does not move at all.
Somthing is not getting somewhere.
I am going to check the tubes and their connections. Since this unit has sat for so long It could be just a reseating /connection problem.

No you don't sound rude, you sound concerned. I appreciate that. I am game to try and do what I am comfortable doing. But I do know what I will not do and will not go there. I have just contacted a local guy who can help me with this unit. Everything is hooked up right. With the QRZ postings I we have come to the conclusion that I am not getting any plate voltage. I will check the tubes and reseat them and make sure all those connections are good. Beyond that, someone else will be looking at it.
Thanks for your concern.

Dick:
Thanks for the quick reply. This is all new to me. Could you please go into a little more detail about all of your steps??
I have 2 knobs that you did not mention in your steps. (AGC/Standby Push and the one that has Current Grid, Plate voltage, 3000 watts fwd, Etc,)
I need to know what to do with these also.
In your #4, you say Apply 100 watts drive from the exciter. Is that my rig?? In #5 you talk about adjusting the "Tuning Knob" which one is that??
I know once I get familiar with how this thing works it will be a piece of cake.
But like I said before, it is all clear as mud right now.

Just got the 220V power installed. Got it connected. I have been trying to read the "Tuning" and "Operating" Instructions for the L-4B from the manual. Right now, those instructions are as clear as mud!!! Does anyone out there have a very simple set of "Tuning" and "Operating" Instructions for this Amplifier??? Want to test it out completely, but I am just not getting what I'm reading. Thanks Bob W8RID

Got it figured out.
The facotry installed CTCSS board had another board installed on it. That is why I did not have the White molex plug.
That is also why my board looked much different that the same board I found in an ebay listing.
I removed the Red, Black and yellow wires and connected them to the appropriate wires int the TS-32.
Viola It worked.
I did have 1 more minor problem that was related to the install. Once installed and working, I lost my audio. That was corrected when I temoved the other 3 wires from the mystery board.
Now everything is working correctly.

Have an FT-726R. It came with the factory installed CTCSS Tone Encoder. In my area the PL tones are 110.9 Which I set the CTCSS board for. Now that I have access to 6mtrs, I now have an antenna for it, I need to be able to change the PL tones for the 6mtr repeaters. They are different that 110.9. Changing the dip switches every time is a pain.
I purchased a TS-32 CTCSS Encoder from Communications Specialists. The instructions are very clear about how to configure the adapter plug and where to plug it in.
I also have to disconnect the factory installed CTCSS board (which I did).
The problem I am having is that I cannot find the plug that I am suppose to plug the TS-32 into.
The instructions say that I have to plug it into the white molex plug on the PB-2448A connector. The PB-2448A is the Scan/sql SW unit according to the FT-726R manual. I just do not know where to find this PB-2448A.
Has anyone out there done this mod?? If so could you please help me out here??
If you haven't done this mod but know where the PB-2448A is, please let me know where it is in the radio and how to access it.
Thanks

Love this little radio. I have had it for several years, bought it used.
It has been a great addition to my collection.
What I have noticed over the past 18 months is that the on/off button is not working corrrectly.
I have to push it more and more to get it to come on. It shuts off right away. It just seems like there is something not right with the switch when I try and turn it on.
Anyone have expertice in this area or had a similar problem and was able to fix it??
How??

Not sure where this should really go so I started here.
I know that there is probably some use for this in Amateur Radio, but I have not run across it yet.
My In-Laws just dumped their Satelite TV Dish.
It is still on their house.
I am willing to take it down for them.
Can you guys give some uses for it in Amateur Radio??(I've already come up with some "other" uses for it, not radio related.)
Thanks

Tried to describe it the best way I could in the description.
Is there a formula or a given number of feet that you leave on the mast coming out of the tower for antenna rotation on the feed cable??
I have a South Centered Meter on the control box. Due to where I am putting this the rotor/antenna will be facing either East or West before I tilt it up.
It will only have to go a quarter turn to hit North. But from the oposite way it will have 3/4 of a turn till it hits North.
The feed line will be tied to that mast till is gets down toward the Tower top section.
Can I get some help with this?
Thanks

I have been asked to put on a little talk about Amateur Radio. I have done some searches on the internet for Power Point Presentations. I have found several that I can use to put mine together without reinventing the wheel.
Does anyone have any other Power point presentations that they would be willing to donate or show me where I can get a copy of them so I can put this together??
Thanks
Bob

In the spring I will be putting up a 40' tower on the back corner of my house. The initial connection to the house will be the "Off-set" bracket that the on leg of the tower will be u-bolted to. Guiding the tower will take place on the othe 2 legs of the tower. One will be parrallel to the back side of the house connected to an eye-bold to the house, The other will be the same accept that it will go along the side of the house to an eye bolt.
This gives me the 2 buide wires holding it into the bracket and the house.
What type of guide wire should be used for this application? i have seen so many different kinds of guide wires for this purpose I just want to get some ideas as to what I should use or what will work best.
thanks
Bob

I was just going by what I have read about amplifiers and the tubes in them. Everything I have read says that you should have matched tubes.
