16  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: multiple monitors; arranging windows on: May 20, 2012, 04:11:07 AM
Every DXLab application provides a Use Multiple Monitors box on its Configuration window's General tab. Make sure this box is checked in each application.
Thanks; I missed that; lots to learn about DXLab and, to use the McDonald's ad, "I'm lovin' it".

17  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / multiple monitors; arranging windows on: May 19, 2012, 07:44:17 AM
Hello,
This morning I set-up two monitors in "extended" mode and can move stuff from one monitor to the other.
I moved several DXLab applications to monitor#2, which is not the main-monitor.
When I power-down, re-apply power, and start-up those applications, they show up on monitor#1, the main-monitor.
I don't want that to happen; rather, I want them to start-up on monitor#2, preferably as I had them arranged prior to power-down but that is probably wishing for too much.
Is there something I can do to make that happen?
I should mention the OS is Win7/64.
I have not researched this problem as I don't know what wording to use for searching this situation.
Tnx in advance for any help.

18  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: who directs where a driver gets placed in the computer's file-structure? on: May 14, 2012, 05:32:08 PM
The OS decides, based on whether the driver code is 32 bit or 64 bit.
OK, thanks for the reply.
I've ordered SIIG-card#JJ-E10D11-S3 and am in the process of returning three different cards that don't get along with HP Pavilion p6 & Win7/64 Home-Premium.
Now I've never heard of SIIG before (I never used RS232 in my professional work) but, from their website, it seems like they make stuff for industrial users.
So I'm hopeful that their product will be a winner for me; besides I've ordered it from the HP website, so that's a good omen for me that HP is selling a SIIG product.
Anyway, could someone tell me where in the driver-coding I could see where the OS gets the info it needs to place the code in the proper file location?
I'd look at the code when it comes here later this week.

Hello,
I'm having a serious issue with Windows7-64bit and drivers.
This is related to another subject I have posted "directions confusing" and I've copied a small part of it here.

I've found out, via a lot of googling, that Windows7 now has special places to keep drivers.
Apparently, based on this link "http://www.msigeek.com/322/driver-store-in-windows-7-and-vista", 64-bit drivers go to a new storage-area for future call-up.
The path is "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore".
This link "http://www.articleinput.com/e/a/title/Where-does-Windows-7-store-drivers-for-devices/" claims there is a 32-bit driver store.
The path for the 32-bit drivers is "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\DriverStore"; "WOW" stands for "Windows-on-Windows".
On my HP Pavilion p6-2021 with Win7-64bit home-premium, I've gone to those places to see what is there.

BTW, why there has to be 32-bit and 64-bit drivers is beyond my pay-grade here in ham-radio to understand.

Anyway, my questions are, "Which coding decides where the drivers are installed? Does the programmer writing the driver tell the computer or does the OS handle those details?"

Since you tried to install the driver from the control panel,......
Please let me clarify....
I used the control-panel to see if the installed card was there via "view devices and printers" or to remove a driver.

Below I've written a summary of my procedures but the bottom-line is this:
I think the drivers are not getting to the correct place expected by my Windows7-64bit.
Apparently, based on this link "http://www.msigeek.com/322/driver-store-in-windows-7-and-vista", drivers go to a new storage-area for future call-up.
The path is "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore".
This link "http://www.articleinput.com/e/a/title/Where-does-Windows-7-store-drivers-for-devices/" claims there is a 32-bit driver store.
Its path is "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\DriverStore".
I read a link that was supposed to explain why this second place is needed but it is still a mystery to me, so I have to work on that topic.

After installing a driver, I checked the first storage mentioned above and, if my checking is right, I see no changes.
Instead, I find the drivers in this path"C:\program files\MosChip\....".
Now, admittedly, I know little about drivers but I presume it is the responsibility of the driver's coding to set up the proper path and not Windows' responsibility.
Perhaps a "driver expert" could comment about that aspect.

As I wrote before, the three cards are going back to the respective vendors and I'm ordering a SIIG-card.

The remainder of this posting is only for anyone interested in a "boring" summary of what I did:
For card#1 (from ebay and Hong Kong), its directions call first for installing the driver, then the hardware.
For card#2 (StarTech PEX2S553LP), directions have first hardware, then driver.
For card#3 (from Newegg and IOCrest PCIe-SIE9835), directions have first hardware, then driver.

For card#1, I attempted to follow the directions faithfully even though there are discrepancies between the text and what came on the screen.
Problem #1: a file-name "PCIesetup.exe" was supposed to show-up but the only '.exe' file there was "StnSetup.exe", so I used it.
It did something; I found this path "C:\Program Files\MosChip\" had one folder (with three files in it) and 6 files.
I installed the hardware and turned on the system.
Problem #2: The computer hung up on the HP-screen (I expect this as the first screen to show up on power-up); 'cont-alt-del' did not work; I had to do the "ten second depress the power-button" routine to regain control of the computer.
I uninstalled the software using Microsoft's Control-Panel.

For card#2 , directions here first has card installed, then software.
Problem #1: on power-up, I saw the HP-screen and then it hung-up with a blinking-cursor on a blank-screen; the expected "Found New Hardware Wizard" was a no-show; 'cont-alt-del' was ineffective and I resorted to the ten second power-button routine.
Problem #2: I thought I'd try to load the driver but the supplied disk had a myriad of files and the directions never called out what the file should be used.
By inspecting the pcb-assemblies, I saw that both card #1 and #2 used MosChip; 9904 for card#1 and 9922 for card#2, so the same driver would be used for each one. So now, I ignored the directions and loaded the driver but it still hung up.

For card#3, it got farther along than the other two but it could not find its driver; nor manually could I find any '.exe' file for it.
Additionally, from a google-search, apparently people are finding that its AMD1083 chip has timing problems.

Hopefully, the SIIG card will work.

Did you install the device drivers first or the card.  You need to install the device drivers first then put in the card.  That way when you fire up the computer, it will find the drivers for it on its own.
de Rick wn2c
I followed the directions, which called for installing the card, then the driver.

I curious as to why you need this card. Are you trying to get a DB-9 connection on the computer? If so, for what pupose... rig control...etc. ?
de Rick wn2c
I've had it with getting USB-to-RS232-adapters; long story there with Dell-laptop running Vista and my new HP-desktop running Win7-64bit.
With the Dell-laptop, the Radio-Shack works my AIM-4170 and the Keyspan won't; the Keyspan works my FT-950 and the Radio-Shack won't.
With the HP-desktop, neither one works; BTW, the latest drivers are installed for each adapter.

Tomorrow, I'm packing up the three RS232-cards to send back to the respective buyers and then ordering a SIIG card.

Hello,

I'm trying to install a RS232-card into my HP Pavilion p6-2021 desktop; OS is Win7-64 bit Home Premium.

I don't understand one line of directions.
This link will show the directions. http://www.sybausa.com/resource/SY-PEX15032/SY-PEX15032_Manual.pdf.
My problem is under the heading "Hardware Installation"; step #5 "Attach your internal devices to the PCI-E Serial Card."
My confusion is:
I don't have any "internal devices" that I know about.
If anybody knows what that means, I'd appreciate some input.
I do have an external device...a Yaesu FT-950...but I did not connect that to the card; after all, it is external.
So I skipped over that step #5.
Anyway, my system reports the driver is not loaded even though I have tried to load it first from the disk that came with the card or then from the Internet.
Also, in the instructions for "Driver Installation", the system never displayed a "Found New Hardware Wizard"; so I tried to work in the Control Panel.

This is the third card I've tried; each one from a different manufacturer and source.
The first two hung my computer; one at the very first screen; the 2nd one (by StarTech) just made it past that first screen.

Yesterday, I found out about a company SIIG that makes a card I need; I suspect I'll be returning these three cards and then call SIIG.

Sorry it wasn't Amazon, it was eBay where I purchased it:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170744713151
Qty Item Options Price
1 4 RS-232 Serial Port COM to PCI-E Card Adapter MOSCHIP
Item # 170697247882   $22.98 USD
They really did offer free shipping as well as the $22.98 is all that I paid.
By the way, it works just great and now I don't worry about disconnects or anything anymore! Smiley

Hello Butch WA4GIF,
I need to ask, "Are you using this card with 64-bit Windows7?"
Hopefully, the answer is yes because I'm ready to buy it.
73 Jerry KM3K
Just to follow-up here, I did a Google search on the MOSCHIP advertised as being used in this card and found a claim that it handles Windows7/64-bit.
So, I have ordered the card and received conformation that it has been shipped with delivery in early May.
Thus far, I've had good success on items shipped from China; I hope this order continues the success story.

One thing I look for is "Microsoft Certified Drivers". This means that they have been tested to Microsoft specifications and, in addition to working,....
The USB-to-RS232 adapter Keyspan-19HS had a "Microsoft Certified Driver", yet it would not work my AIM4170 but a Radio-Shack Gigaware adapter did. Consequently, I have little confidence in "Microsoft Certified Drivers".

26  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: I Bought A New Personal Computer-Should I Bother Adding Serial Ports? on: April 18, 2012, 11:52:17 AM
They are only as problematic as you make them. I find them to be very reliable.
The person, who wrote these sentences, must lead a charmed life.

I personally have had problems with two different kinds of USB-to-RS232 adapters connected to my Dell laptop running Vista:
1. RadioShack's Gigaware works with my AIM-4170 and the Keyspan won't (please note that W5BIG and I spent days trying to get the Keyspan to work the AIM).
2. Keyspan worked with my Yaesu FT-950 via Logger32 but RadioShack's Gigaware won't.
Figure that conundrum out. Smiley

Now, because my grandchildren do their homework on the laptop, I've bought a new HP-Pavilion p6-2021 running 64-bit Windows7 and neither adapter works my FT-950.
Just to comment....I have the latest drivers from the respective manufacturer's website and do pay proper attention to COM-ports, baud-rate, etc.

Interestingly enough, my six year old Dell desktop with its built-in RS232:
1. ran the AIM4170 with no problems,
2. does everything very nicely in Logger32.

Life is too short to waste on getting USB-to-RS232 adapters to function; I'm now shopping for a RS232-card for the HP.

27  eHam Forums / Elmers / burning-up a mfj-269 on: February 23, 2012, 07:08:13 AM
Hello,
Our radio-club has bought a mfj-269.
I recall recently reading on-line somewhere the mfj-269 can be easily burned-out if the manual's stipulated sequence (serious enough to be repeated nine times throughout the manual) is not followed to put the mfj-269 in the UHF-testing-mode. That article also mentioned the part that gets damaged. Regretfully, I am not able to remember what that part is; hopefully someone could supply the answer and maybe comment on how easy/hard it is to replace by a ham.
I've been reading the manual on-line and have a technical question that'll I'll put in a separate posting.

I bought the 4 port serial board from Amazon (really imported from China) for $22 and it works great. No more problems
I'd like to get one for my new HP-tower.
Just now, I was unable to find any $22 card from Amazon; if you can, please supply a company/part-number. Thanks.

30  eHam Forums / Elmers / matching impedances with stubs on: January 26, 2012, 05:42:07 PM
Hello,
I volunteered to give a presentation, at our local club's next meeting (21feb2012), on "matching impedances with stubs".
I'm very much comfortable with the theoretical aspects of the topic in designing, with an admittance-Smith-chart, either single, or double, or triple stubs.
But, on the practical side, presuming that parallel-stubbing is used for coaxial or open-wire transmission-lines, my concerns are with applying of the method and I hope that some could comment on these points:
1. How low in frequency do users find satisfactory results? I'd expect frequencies would not be lower than 144 MHz because, below that frequency, stub-length becomes unwieldy.
2. Assuming that only shorted-stubs are used, how does one secure the stubs mechanically to keep them from "flapping in the breeze"? Anything I conjure up in my mind's eye seems awkward.

While reading the ARRL's "Antenna-Book" 21st edition, I came across a matching method (Series-section transformer; the algebraic method on pg 26-5 and Smith-chart on pg 28-13)
that was new to me. If I ever had to do impedance-matching using transmission-lines, I think this would be the first method I'd try because:
1. I might be able to use it for frequencies lower than 144 MHz, and
2.  I would not have to be concerned about "mechanically securing stubs so they would not flap in the breeze".
