Keep in mind also that your callsign is not necessarily being announced over the repeater at the other end; this is an option that can be turned off by the system administrator.
That's even more reason to announce your callsign (after listening briefly). I find that I am much more likely to drum up a QSO if I drop in a friendly greeting, rather than just waiting.

Why would a Google search require Windows?

eHam Forums / Elmers / TM-D700A "Opening TNC" lock-up
|
on: July 18, 2007, 03:53:44 AM

I've owned a TM-D700A for about four years. I did run info this problem once, about six months ago. After resetting the rig (using the back-panel reset button), the rig returned to normal, and I haven't encountered the problem since.

eHam Forums / Elmers / RTTY in FSK Mode with USB Serial Adapters?

One solution is to use an actual 16550 UART device instead of a USB-to-serial converter. The USB-to-serial converter is good for most applications, but is not fully compatibile with a true-blue UART.
For a notebook, you can use a PCMCIA card (also known as a PC Card). I have had good success with the SIIG Single-Serial PC Card, both on Windows and Linux. This is a true UART that will work at the low, non-standard speeds required for FSK.

Nearly every year, we've drummed up some extra interest from inactive hams by sending out Field Day reminder postcards.
The address list comes from the FCC database of hams in the surrounding ZIP codes. Each year, we get one or two folks who stop by the Field Day site, postcard in hand, with the explanation that they've been off the air for a while but wanted to stop by and see the FD operation.

The USB-to-serial adapters are the easiest and cheapest way to add a single serial port, and they are compatible with most software.
If you need true 16550 UART compatibility (such as slow 5-bit data, like Baudot), however, you will need a true UART; these are available either as PCI cards or PCMCIA cards.
The PCI card might also be a good choice if you need to add 2 or more serial ports at once, even if compatibility isn't an issue.

eHam Forums / Elmers / Cooling Fan for HW-101?
|
on: May 21, 2007, 01:45:20 PM
|
|
I used to use the HW-101 on RTTY quite a bit (100% duty cycle), and I installed a small fan inside the cabinet, at the rear center of the chassis.
At the time I didn't have the CW filter, so I used the filter switch as an on-off switch for the fan. The only missing wiring was the neutral side of the AC from the power supply, which I brought up by adding a wire to the power supply cable, connected to a spare pin at each end.

Incidentally, I believe that radios like the FT2800M have a "WiRES" feature that allows them to be used in conjunction with WiRES nodes. It does not mean that the radio can be used *as* a WiRES node, without the addution of the WiRES package itself, which is what I was referring to above.

The WiRES-II package comes with a cable with a multi-pin connector at one end, and stripped and tinned leads on the other.
You'll need to customize this cable by adding appropriate connectors for your rig. I believe WiRES requires that you connect incoming and outgoing audio, plus PTT control and carrier detect. Carrier detect is usually available on a back-panel accessory connector (or "packet" connector). If there is no such connector on your rig, you'll have to dig in and find a COS line internally.

If you're on the road and want to access EchoLink using a computer, your best bet is to take advantage of any of the many public proxy servers that have been provided.
Under Tools->Setup, click the Servers tab, select the Public Proxy option, and choose an available proxy from the drop-down list.

The Heathkit SB-104A kit sold for $694.95 in 1981.
According to the data.bls.gov site, due to inflation that same kit would cost $1,569.96 in today's dollars, and I expect that both the K2 and the K3 would run rings around it in terms of performance.

EchoLink isn't a digital mode, so a TNC wouldn't normally be used with it.
Instead, what you will need is an audio interface between your computer's sound card, and also some way of keying the transceiver's PTT line from the computer's serial port.
For details, see the Interfaces list on the EchoLink Web site.

It depends on whether the node owner has set up custom DTMF commands, or is using the defaults only. If he or she has modified the connect/disconnect scripts, the sequence of digits might be different. Your best bet is to contact the node owner by using the special page on the IRLP Web site ( www.irlp.net), and ask for the specifics for the node you are interested in using.
