The 13 Colonies Special Event is always loads of fun - http://www.13colonies.info/ Big signals, excellent operators, and a unique challenge to get all 13 of them in the log. I like this contest. I'm a QRP operator, and this contest is made more challenging than it has to be by "big gun" operators who, despite instructions to the contrary, try to work all 13 on ALL BANDS. It doesn't give them a bigger certificate, although I sort of wish the guy who runs the contest would attach a LID off of a soup can to give them something for their efforts. -- Tom

As long as you get payment before you ship it sounds ok to me.
Not really. Sometimes, the scammers pay with forged cashiers check, which you deposit and find out too much later that the check isn't any good. And PayPal with stolen credit cards is a common problem, common enough for PayPal to urge people not to do business with certain countries. I know that forged money orders are also a problem, and scammers have even gone so far as to create fake escrow sites to make you think you are protected. 73, -- Tom

While normally you would think DXpeditions would be operating split, it is quite common to hear them operating simplex when not busy. I heard several this weekend - outside the contest - operating simplex and one announcing split but answering on his transmit freq. One started out split, but then ended up operating simplex.
In any case it is more likely to hear a DX station operating split, announcing it, and then hear several people calling on freq for whatever reason.
Very true. Towards the end of the expedition, I worked Malpelo Island 20m simplex. -- Tom

What kind of roof do you have? If there's any foil or metal covering your roof, that will inhibit reception and transmission.

Why is there an ad from leggings.com on this site? It's obnoxious-looking and doesn't seem to be a good fit. I'd be glad to pay eHam what leggings.com is paying you, but...you guessed it...I'm broke!
Pay for a subscription to eHAM and you WON'T see the Leggings ad! It won't cost you an arm or a LEG for the subscription. I have one and I don't see any ads at all !!! I'm a paid subscriber, and I see them. Are you sure you don't have some other form of ad-blocking going on? Yes, I'm logged in. -- Tom

I'm still interested in the Argonaut VI, but I'm not sure how well they will be able to compete at that price range. The first eHam reviews give it 5.0, and they say that the audio is great. However, I don't think it stacks up well against the KX3 overall.
I never buy bleeding edge equipment. I wait until it's been out for a while so that the bugs are known and hopefully, corrected or worked around.

You can also buy a dipole adapter for hamstick type antennas for about $20. You just clamp it to a mast, and screw in a hamstick of your band of choice on each side. It's not the best performer, but an antenna beats no antenna.

QRP-ARCI has a 1000-Miles-Per-Watt certificate you can get.
I didn't know about the QRP endorsement for WAS. I only need 3 more states and I'll have WAS, and I'll make sure that the QRP is noted.

I got a nice picture of the Wise County reservoir with the QSL information on the back from a ham in Wise County, VA, and it is very attractive and much appreciated. If yours are just blank post cards, they will still do.

What mode do you want to operate in? CW is a lot more forgiving of compromise antennas than SSB.
Antenna-wise, you may try a hamstick dipole. Just about anything else, other than a portable vertical, which you already said you didn't have good results with, would require being able to fasten on to something. If you want to minimize lugging around big batteries, you are probably going to have to stick to QRP, or VERY short sessions with more power. As far as rigs go, I love my FT817ND. With that, an Emtech ZM-2 tuner, and a bunch of wire, I've currently got 65 DX entities with SSB, and I'm 4 states short of WAS.
I plan on doing CW, but I need practice time (both sending and receiving).
BTW, I'm in Alexandria, VA, so I'm not too far away.

I usually look up the call sign on QRZ. If they say they don't QSL, and that is not contradicted by the information at the top of the page, I just don't bother to send a card. Some people put "No" in the "QSL by mail" section to indicate that they don't QSL by mail at all, and some put it there to indicate that they won't send initiate a card exchange.

It varies for me. While I'm chasing the awards, I'm not in a big hurry.
Some of the cards I'm still waiting for are my own fault. The cards I sent to Croatia, I sent 1 IRC, but I've recently learned that they can't get enough postage with 1 IRC, so they want 2 IRCs, or $3 or $4 in green stamps. There may be a similar situation in Venezuela and Denmark, I don't know. I hope they at least sent me QSLs via the bureau, if nothing else.

eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Field day--in general
|
on: June 26, 2012, 10:32:13 AM

I consider our club's field day to be a success because:
1.) Nobody died or was hurt, 2.) If you wanted to operate, you could, 3.) The food was great, 4.) There was plenty of time for socializing, 5.) We scored some points, and yes, this was the lowest priority.
Our club values fun over competition.
I think about the only grousing that occured was when visitors (non-hams) dropped by around the time food was being served. At least they showed some interest in what we were doing, and asked questions about the radios, so that didn't really bother me (but then, I wasn't in charge of food). We did have some people drop by to ask for bottles of water who didn't even ask about what we were doing, which I guess is a consequence of operating in a public place.
If you wanted your name on a plaque for scoring the most points, our club wasn't the field day for you. If you wanted to see a variety of radios, and antennas, THAT we could show you.
