Mr. Carswell, KT4WO - I thank you for your email thru the contact form from IP 63.19.185.165.  Did you think your IP is not trace-able back to North Carolina where your QTH is?

But you took the time to show how adult you are here in the forum while acting like a child behind closed doors. Grow up.

You are a far, far cry from what Amateur Radio is all about.

Regards,
-Ian

Hello, about a year ago I posted a message regarding sending/receiving email over packet radio. After testing and some additional enhancements, version 1.3.1 of ODQMail is available at http://www.odqmail.com

I would appreciate any suggestions towards future improvements of the software.

Thank you and 73,
-Ian, WA6ODQ

Hello, thank you for your input.

Not trying to play devil's advocate, but what would the "alternate radio service furnished reasonably" be?

There are other alternatives to APRS and Winlink, I don't see where one could draw the proverbial line.

Email set aside, other features include Callbook lookups, Traffic Conditions and Weather by Zipcode.  What is the alternative to that?

Thanks!  (and I'm really not trying to be a pain in the side, just getting all aspects covered and the hope that anyone in the hobby can make use of what I'm trying to do here.)

I've been developing this over the last few months and it is almost similar to what you are trying to do.  http://odqmail.ianthurston.com

You could have a program on your base station computer, which upon connect, puts you thru to a telnet session to your linux server and relays the data between telnet over ethernet, to packet over serial and vice versa.

I have a version of this also in the works, but it's for Windows, but that wouldn't stop you from running a telnet session to Linux.

The website for this won't be up for awhile, but the program is called TNCBridge and will be available at http://tncbridge.ianthurston.com

I wanna say it's XMITOK ON but I think when it's turned off, it disables transmitting altogether, not just the ID.

If you are still having trouble, I'll go out in the garage and look for the manual.

I have a few KPC-3's with varying ROM's, you really don't need to upgrade from 5.1 unless you want to use that TNC for APRS.  I just took the KPC3P TRACKER out of my truck because it doesn't work with KaGold in Host Mode for some reason, I put in a KPC-3/5.1 in it's place and added a TinyTrak3 for the APRS beaconing.

The KPC-3P does have two ports, one for RS-232 and the second for GPS data.  You can find the info on this from the Kantronics website.

There are a couple features that regulate the system.

1.) Allowed senders.  You cannot list/read messages from anyone that you haven't already sent a message to.  You can also manually add and remove senders from your list.

2.) The sysop has to create the account for the remote user.  Someone cannot simply connect, add their pop3/smtp server and be off running.  They have to connect and issue the A command to request an account.  The account can of course be removed by the sysop at will.

Thank you for your input.  I am incorporating other features before release, I am interested in all your comments.

How does WinLink get around this?
12  eHam Forums / Digital / Send/Receive Email Over Packet on: December 02, 2006, 07:41:35 PM
Hello, thanks for your reply.

I have never tried WinLink, but I understand it's used on HF.  I wrote this software for use on VHF, mainly because I only have KPC-3's at my disposal, and I'm not a General class licensee.

The think about scanning thru commercial email (or SPAM) is on the operator when he/she does a message list (L) they can see who it's from, date/time and subject.  If it is from someone they do not know or it looks like spam, they can kill it (K) without reading it.  The software acts just like a PBBS.

I have found that SPAM is normally received after someone puts their email address on a bulletin board, guestbook, or mailing list.  If someone is using packet to send/receive personal email, there really shouldn't be any way their email could be placed on a SPAM mailing list unless of course someone forwards a website (Tell a Friend link or similar) and uses their packet radio email address,  in which case it is again on the operator (or recipient) to kill the message from their list.

I am planning on incorporating a SPAM/dirty word filter into the software in the near future.

I have developed a software package that allows your station to be an email gateway, all that's required is a TNC and your computer connected to the internet.

I have used it to send/receive email while mobile (connect to my home station and start typing). It's authenticated by callsign and connects to the user's POP3/SMTP server, or if you host email like me you can create user accounts on your server to provide email access to whomever you like.

It's been tested with Comcast and Windows Exchange Server 2003, and the only TNC I have tested it with is a Kantronics KPC-3. It should work with any Kantronics TNC as the command structure is the same, if you want to see a little preview you can check it out a
http://odqmail.ianthurston.com. I will have a trial version available for download shortly, just check back in to the website for updates.

I'd appreciate any comments, either here or using the website feedback form. You can also do callbook lookups as well. The interface looks like a standard BBS interface with comprehensive help and features.

15  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Web Based Log? on: December 01, 2006, 12:44:07 AM
I am considering writing a web-based log, if someone can provide me with the fields they'd like to store, I can develop one that users can sign into and log their contacts.
