1  eHam Forums / Site Talk / RE: Bad Photos in the Classified Ads on: February 18, 2012, 07:01:35 AM
Many good points on "bad" pics, but my favorite is no Pics &/or "Pics on request but only if you're serious...." & the best one is IMHO "can't get the Pics to upload..." Makes ya' wonder about the item, doesn't it.
I get that some Hams have limits, but asking someone to help is what this hobby is about, I hear?  ;-)

I just avoid dealing with folks who do any of that, it's just not worth the time. I understand the "Cheap Ham" deal &/or lack of camera/computer skills (however see "Help" comment above). If a Ham really serious about sell/trade then ASK, even many younger Hams will assist. HiHi

So happy "hunting" & don't you eat the yellow snow.... Tongue
2  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: Chinese VHF/UHF Radios on: October 03, 2011, 10:03:32 AM
There are Folks defending the Chinese flooding the market with goods so cheap you "must" buy them. Allow me to proffer the economic "fact", that will be ultimate downfall of this GREAT country we inhabit...

Here's a quote from on of our Founding Fathers, John Adams, make of it what you will....

"There are two ways to enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt."

— John Adams (1797-1801) Second President of the United States and Patriot

Here's my post quoted below from QTH forum. It was intended with a "smattering" (read that as a lot) of sarcasm, which I hope comes through. I will, however stand by the essence of my comments....

"Fellow Hams, it has come to my attention the Chinese are flooding the market with cheap, essentially throw away JUNK ham gear!! Which I'm sure you're all aware of, unless, like the Geico commercial, you've been living under a rock! Hi Hi

For all that's Holy don't fall for their ploy, after forcing everyone else out of the market with their cheap crap, the prices will go up substantially, BUT not the service or quality!!!

So why oh why are hams falling for it, because it costs less ....... initially...But AHA no service, no reasonable repairs & I've been told they're a pain to program & did I mention accessories are hard to come by & aren't cheap...

SOOO, this is my position, DON'T BUY CHINESE & as Donald Trump stated, "the Chinese are our enemy..."!!!!

If you're comfy doing business with our Mortal Economic Enemy then you'll get what you deserve... & unfortunately so will the rest of us in the bargain !!!!!!!!

So spend $100 +/- for an HT & when it breaks or gets funky ...throw it out...HUH?

Spend $175 for a quality HT & get service if needed & Oh yeah it might even work for a while!!!

In these tough economic times I truly understand the temptation....but unless it's life or death...save your pennys & buy a "good" rig....

Food for thought ....

My 2¢.. "

I agree DXLABSUITE is ok. I found HamRadioDeluxe, HRD, to be more sophisticated, along with that sophistication of course takes some tinkering.
Hey, for what they cost (FREE), try 'em both.....

> No different than the public safety network infrastructure really.

That's been my objection to DStar as an emcomm platform all along.  It's a wireless IP solution waiting for the right problem to come along.

Here, here..
Dstar, IMHO, is another facet of Hamdom that, while I'm sure can be fun & has it's place & use; I do not feel Emcomms is one of them.
1st: it requires Hams to pay for a "dedicated" "rig/dongle/Dvap, etal..."..read $$$...
2nd: it requires a fair bit of "vodoo" to set up..
3rd: too many "links in the chain" to fail, your digital rig with all it's programming, a Dstar repeater, controller, Inet gateway & the Dstar backbone internet link.....
4th: in some instances you need a "secret handshake" just to make it work....

Don't get me wrong, while I feel it is a "modern; version of Echolink, analog vs digital & it's a technological "marvel" that has a reasonable "infrastructure" & # of users, it's not "common place or simple enough" to be considered using in an EMERGENCY!!!!

OBTW, I have a strong backgroung in computers & 'technology" & there is a famous axiom widely used, KISS!!!! (Keep It Simple Stupid, Keep It Short & Simple....). A great many Great people adhere to this daily when "creating". So, we have HF, V/U simplex & repeaters, Digi modes (I'm sure I'm missing some) for Emcomm now, why add another tangent to the equation...

KISS.... critical with the # of Hams, skill levels, equipment, training,,,etc that would be "needed" in an Emcomm EMERGENCY...adding to the "confusion" would not be beneficial...again these are MY OPINIONS <with a smattering of fact tossed in for good measure  Roll Eyes Tongue > & did I mention KISS <no not the rock band  Wink >.

Wow, there goes my morning... Tongue

I've heard opinions are like an certain anatomical part, everyone has one, some are just "prettier" than others....So I'm sure the "debate" will go on, "proponents vs opponents".... each "side" "armed" with suppositions & feelings.... & hell maybe a few actual facts or cases where "X & Y" performed better than "A & B".   Kiss

REMEMBER, 1st & foremost, this is, above all, a HOBBY....<thought I was going to use KISS again, Huh?>
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Icom or Kenwood HF radio? on: April 11, 2011, 08:13:10 PM

***480 SAT nice sound & features but no IF Dsp, if you want to block strong adjacent signals, I think it's a must.... 480 SAT only one with internal tuner, depending on your antenna system you may still require an external one....

IF DSP does not guarantee this. It has its own slope on its skirts for filtering and ultimate rejection. I have optional 1.8khz SSB fillter in my 480 and I do not find it lacking. Actually I find its skirts are much steeper than older generation Kenwood 1.8 khz SSB filters used in previous Kenwood rigs.

True & I did look into the 1.8 SSB filter, and after installing one in my IC706 MKiiG, my observation is while it helped, but not as much as the IF filtering that gives you a wide range of adjustments, as in my IC7200 or 7000 or even 746 Pro I've owned/own.

My preference of course & while I did like the TS480, one issue prevented me from installing the 1.8 in the 480, SOLDERING  Tongue ....not my strong point.... Roll Eyes

As many posted, there are a bunch of well priced rigs, new & used, providing good performance.... Enjoy the hobby with what "floats your boat"....
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: What radio to buy....what to buy at Dayton on: April 09, 2011, 03:26:06 PM
Oh go on, just get a 2nd mortgage, tap into savings & pensions, borrow from the relatives & just buy it alll.... Tongue Cheesy

I will go to Dayton, I will go to Dayton, I will go to Dayton...Damn, clicked my heels & I'm still here....

Have a blast & at least think about us poor shlubs who can't be there...

Seriously, enjoy....

Wow three pages and World War III has not broken out  Grin
I thought these kind of posts were supposed to be world ending  Cheesy Peace and love in my lifetime between Icom and Kenwood users  Shocked Now if some willing soul is ready to take on the post "Which is Better, Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu"
Naah, that's like tap dancing on the head of a Nuke  Grin

Too funny....  Cheesy Wink

Anyway I've owned all 3, so I'll venture some insights.....

***718 is very "basic" & no IF DSP, Twin Band Pass as Icom calls it, but not a bad rig...you'll probably upgrade..

***7200 with great IF Dsp and sounds OK from front firing speaker, but using an external one makes it sound quite good...

***480 SAT nice sound & features but no IF Dsp, if you want to block strong adjacent signals, I think it's a must.... 480 SAT only one with internal tuner, depending on your antenna system you may still require an external one....

Note: The Icoms need external tuners regardless..unless you have the "antenna farm of all antenna farms", with a "resonant" antenna for each band up 100' or so on separate  towers.. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cool

Now, I've given my 2 cents, I also give the following disclaimer, so as not to tamper which the delicate balance aforementioned Roll Eyes Tongue ..... these are my OPINIONS & your mileage may vary......... Roll Eyes

Go "play" & compare @ a Toy Store, it's worth the trip, IMHO!!

Heres' where I got my software for all my 2/440 rigs. http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ .... works well, great service, fairly priced.... Also I've gotten all my cables from KawaMall on Ebay...good stuff for decent $$.

Good luck on getting your ticket & upgrade, HF is where the "fun's at" IMHO.....Have fun, enjoy & remember it's a Hobby.....

13  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Are Hams prepared for a nuclear accident? on: April 07, 2011, 10:27:29 AM
"Are Hams prepared for a nuclear accident?"
Add "Most" before "Hams" & in a word, no!!!!

I doubt that but a select few would come remotely close to being of any "help". I believe no one would disagree, a nuclear accident is very complex issue, as evidenced by the aftermath of the Sendai earthquake & resultant Tsunami. I certainly wouldn't be inclined to do anything except take care of my family, in a similar situation & not be on the radio!!

My 2 cents, etc, etc..... & Oh yeah, "Duck & Cover"....

Yes, I edited my post & yes the duck & cover is being sarcastic & maybe even a "lame" attempt @ humor, yet a reference to the Governments BS about being Nuked by the "Soviets", like that would save you...OK a little off topic, but .... to "beg the question", "are Hams....accident?".. I again will opine, "No, but for a SELECT few".....

No I don't need chastised about my comments, as life's too short for anyone to "cry in their beer"...... Historically, humor has seen many folks thru a myriad of tragic disasters...
