eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Gutter Antennas?

Steve,
Been working the "gutter" now for about a month on HF. I have worked 5 countires on 20 and various QSO parties into GA, FLA, NH etc. I found I cound actually tune the gutter using the MFJ tuner I have down to 1.5.1 SWR and have been on 40 meters with it as well, tried to hook both gutters togeher and had an excessive amount of noise with this, so I went back to just the U shaped one and may try another run of coax to the opposite gutter to see if I can work different band with the coax switch to pick which gutter I want.
Sure would like a wire in the air but my home QTH is very limited antenna-wise. It works for me and I am happy to not be off the air.

Thought I would pass this along. When we bought our ground floor condo 4 years ago, I still had a tech license. Having upgraded this past 2 weeks to general I was ready to try HF. I had used our rain gutter as a lark on a 6 meter opening and made a contact a couple years ago to AL fron N. VA. This time I took a somewhat more structured approach. I ran about 17 feet of single insulated speaker wire out and across from the sencond bedroom (shack) and over to my wooden fence along the top. I was able to stealth this a bit as we have flower treluses, 6 of them along this same fence and a few inches above. I next ran RG8X from the bedroom to the wall outside and attached one end to the 17 ft wire, and the other end to the 100 Ft. rain gutter that runs vertically across the roof Tuned the whole thing with a MFJ 902B and am making contacts into SA, texas and the caribean. Best yet was Bogata Columbia at 2700 miles and had not had any RF problems.

I have a 7800 in the car, and recently my wife, zapped my FT-857 in the house and killed the control head, it would only recieve VHF and none of the buttons worked. possibly something similar has happened to your 7800, if it is still under warranty you could send it to the Yaesu repair depot in Cypress, CA.

eHam Forums / CW / Question on CW

I recently had a conversation with an older Amatuer op, who stated he did not think the new tech HF rights allowed for CW operation on HF with anything other than a morse code key, in other words computer generated CW was not allowed as it was a digital mode and therefore you had to use a key. Anyone know if this is the case?

In an earlier post I was looking for ideas to mount a DJ-V5 on the dash. I came across this by accident but others may want to try it for other HT's. I had bought a Radio Shack mobile speaker a while back and found the mounting bracket in the car. It has long metal sides that fit through both dash vents, I took some 3M double back sticky tape after inserting the bracket partly into the vents, and placed this on the back of the bracket. this allows about 1.34 inches available for the belt clip and is close enough to see the display and operate. With the SMA to PL259 cable and the mirage amp under the passenger seat, I am now mobile with the HT!

My Tercel has the rounded dash and round air veent and would like ideas on how I could mount the HT to the dash without messing it up but still get to it. I will have the antenna cable snake under the passenger side seat to a mirage dual-band amp. Any help is appreciated.
