Just a suggestion, if you have 350 ft to play with you may want to try a double extended Zeppelin, lots of info on the web.
I have one roughly cut for 3.800 on the 80 meter band, it is fed with appx. 150 feet of 450 ohm ladder line to an MFJ 919 current balun and then a short piece of RG8 thru the wall to a MFJ934 tuner in the shack.
I have not exceeded 100 watts (yet) but it tunes well on 80,40, and 20 meters, the claims are that it is a 3db gain antenna....It is much quieter on receive than my Buckmaster 7 band inverted "V"

Hi Kevin; I recently purchased an HW12 in supposedly operating condition, i've spent a lot of time cleaning it up and it does receive. I'm about to make my first transmission but i would really like to speak with an HW 12 owner regarding initial and then final tune up. I have no tube type transceiver experience hence my request... 73 Dave VE9YA dredfern@nb.sympatico.ca

I applaud you in wanting to restore the radio to "as new" I see a comment here that after you do have it restored you only have a Heathkit..... So what? I have a recently acquired HW12A here with the speaker/power supply, it sure looks looks like it's been around for awhile but I intend to restore it to the level of my own incompetence.... In this age of "plug and play" rigs I'm glad to see i'm not alone in wanting to restore this older tube type rig. I know nothing beyond the basics of how radios "work" I intend this to be a learning experience over the long cold winter nights here in Maritime Canada 73 VE9YA Dave

eHam Forums / Elmers / Net protocol question

Hello Elmers....
I am one of the controllers on two different nets one HF the other VHF, we have some women operators who check in and it has been my practice, on say a round of five checkins, to first call in the lady operator, even if she was the last to check in. (the old ladies before gentlemen thing)
I was very recently chastised by a male operator for that practice, he said "there is no gender" in amatuer radio....
Interesting observation from his point and it has me wondering..... Am I doing it wrong? Your comments please....

"Run one strip against the back wall or underside of your counter/self/desk and run a separate strip to each piece of gear using the adhesive to fix the strip to bare metal "
Will not the adhesive inhibit electrical contact?

eHam Forums / Elmers / Icom microphones ?

Thank you for the response to my question about the SM6
I guess i knew about the IC 740 radio not having "built in" pre-amplification and that the mic provided that function.
Well i plugged the mic in and went "on air" with a friend...
First off it worked, I set the dial on the bottom at 12:00 but i was overdriving at that setting, so i backed it down to the 10:00 position
The report was that my audio was more clear than when using the hand mic (as supplied) lacked the "punch" of the hand mic.
So the Jury is still out on this case... I guess it is a matter of personal preference..
Thanks to all.... 73

Hello Elmers;
I have a basic question: The manual for my radio an ICOM 740 shows an alternate microphone as the SM5 desk mike.
I recently picked up a very nice SM6 desk mike at a local Flea Market.
The question is, are these microphones similar?
Thank you;
Dave

Hi All;
I have a Kenwood THG-71 handheld here with a 9.6 volt battery, the best charge I can get into it over 14 hours is 6.9 volts..
So i assume the battery is gone...or has developed a memory.
Does anyone know a source for new batterys for this rig, preferably in Canada
Thanks;

eHam Forums / Elmers / OCF Dipole location

Hello All;
I have a Buckmaster OCF dipole erected as per instructions, on the long leg one part of the wire is touching a large limb, I'd rather not cut that limb and/or the one close above it.....
Question.....Is it permissible to tie a string to the dipole and raise it off the limb or does the touching really matter?
Thanks;
Dave VE9YA

I bought the HTX 242 and have been using it for almost a month as a base unit, 30 amp Pyramid power supply and a commercial, 2 meter aluminum folded dipole antenna about 20 ft. in the air. I can regularly hit a certain repeater 80 miles away on high 45 watts power......
