46  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: LOTW - Help Needed! on: December 27, 2011, 04:11:04 PM
Found the problem - computer has a virus and a lot of programs are infected. Now it won't even run Internet Explorer. I need to get the computer cleaned. -- Good news is that an old laptop had the tsql program on it - and it still worked, so I guess I will have to enter my logs that way, at least temporarily.
47  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: LOTW - Help Needed! on: December 24, 2011, 11:35:46 AM
Completely reinstalled the TQSL program and downloaded my .tq6 certificate file from the lotw web site. The circle with a line through it still does not change to a ribbon. When I try to load the certificate it says no certificates loaded and says there are two errors. -- I am going to contact the ARRL. If it still doesn't work I am going to give up.
48  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: LOTW - Help Needed! on: December 24, 2011, 08:00:02 AM
Thanks. I downloaded the certificate from the lotw website. I tried to install it to the TQSL cert program and it said there were two user errors. Tried to sign a .adi file and it still says I have no certificates. Guess i will have to contact arrl.
49  eHam Forums / Misc / LOTW - Help Needed! on: December 23, 2011, 06:53:01 PM
I never received a TQ6 file in my email, so how can I use Logbook of the World? I used it previously but then my computer crashed and all the TQ files were corrupted. It says I can't load a log without having the certificate. When it works it seems to work ok, but I guess you can't use lotw if you can't the certificate. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks
50  eHam Forums / Digital / Unable to make psk31 contacts during Field Day on: June 26, 2011, 04:00:41 PM
I brought my Yaesu 747 and Rigblaster Plus to Field Day and hooked them up to a laptop computer. I was able to make a few RTTY contacts using software called MMTTY. I tried using the Digipan Software to try and make psk31 contacts for Field Day. I could see hundreds of stations calling CQ FD, but I was unable to contact any of them. I did all kinds of troubleshooting including the serial port, yes it is using com 5 and it is transmitting (and I did make the rtty contacts). Was it possible that my psk31 signal was going out through a really poor antenna? Again, I made the rtty contacts. Was it the software? I did notice that the waterfall images were not as good on a laptop as they are on a desktop monitor. I tried adjusting the waterfall and transmitter settings. I checked the swr. Everything was set up exactly to transmit a psk31 signal. I was kind of embarassed because I had told our club I would try to make lots of digital contacts on psk31. Then I feel like I let them down because I couldn't contact anyone. There has to be some reason why the signal was not getting out there. If any one knows of any possible reasons why I was not able to contact anyone on psk31, please let me know. Maybe I should have tried a different software program? Maybe it was the sound card? Thanks. de AG5T

52  eHam Forums / Digital / Running rigblaster - is desktop better than laptop for psk31? on: June 18, 2011, 07:23:14 PM
I have a Rigblaster Plus. Made a couple of psk31 contacts tonight using my Yaesu 747 and the home computer (desktop). I notice that you can actually plug an extra cable from the rigblaster to the computer. In the case of using a laptop, you actually operate with one less cable, because there are only two holes for the sound card as opposed to three on the desktop. What I am wondering is if you could operate without that cable when using the desktop as well. The two holes on the laptop sound card show microphone and headphones. The three holes on the desktop sound card show microphone, headphones and line in (correct?). Trying to get set up for field day and possibly making a few digital contacts. If it's better to use a desktop for psk31, then we will make arrangements to bring a desktop computer to the FD site. Otherwise, we might try to do it with the laptop. I personally think the software runs better and looks better on the desktop. Any thoughts? Thanks.
53  eHam Forums / Misc / Replacement batteries for MFJ 107B 24 hour clock on: April 30, 2011, 08:45:14 AM
Does anyone know what kind of battery to use for a replacement for the MFJ 107B 24 hour clock? It appears to be some type of watch battery, but I misplaced the original battery which had stopped working. Thanks. Could it maybe be model 376??
54  eHam Forums / DXing / Using a DX spotting list and LOTW on: March 17, 2011, 05:10:10 PM
I have used DX Monitor to help me spot for a variety of different reasons, the main one being to highlight the DXCC countries I haven't worked yet. I know there are a variety of opinions about using dx spotting lists - sometimes I have heard people called cluster crabs, etc. In my case, I can set up DX Monitor to show me what stations use LOTW. If I were to work one of those stations and confirm the contact via LOTW it would save me from mailing qsl cards. The way DX monitor shows me if someone is using LOTW is that the call sign is in bold type. I could certainly try just to work those stations, but I am not sure if that is in the true DX spirit. Any thoughts on this?
55  eHam Forums / Digital / Setting alerts in Digipan on: February 27, 2011, 02:43:44 PM
How do I set the color coded alerts in Digipan. There is a default color of yellow whenever the text string of CQ appears.  Say I want to watch for PJ7. How can I make an alert that makes the window red (or blue, etc.) if the text string PJ7 appears? In other words, how can I make an alert that shows a PJ7 station is on psk31? Thanks. Huh
56  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Logbook of the World help needed on: February 26, 2011, 05:30:28 AM
Got it working! Was entering dates wrong - went back and reinstalled software and went step by step. Ok now. Thanks everyone.
57  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Logbook of the World help needed on: February 23, 2011, 05:34:58 AM
I was getting the error messages when I tried to request a new certificate. I did previously use LOTW but the computer I was using to log contacts on trusted qsl crashed and I lost the data. I downloaded the trusted qsl software onto a different computer and did a test file of about three contacts. When I tried to sign the file, I got a message on the software that said no certificates were found. I also noticed that I do not have a gold ribbon next to my call sign but a circle with a line through it -I think that indicates a certificate error. So I think if can figure out how to change that circle to a ribbon I might be able to upload logs again. Thanks.

59  eHam Forums / Clubs / Field Day operation by less than 3 people? on: April 18, 2010, 03:45:29 PM
I was reading in the Field Day rules where in order to operate as a radio club you needed to have at least three people to operate Class A, and if you operate off power mains, it's Class A Commercial. Just curious - if you only have two people, can you still operate as a club station or do you have to use one of the two individuals' call signs? Can two people operate with a club call sign? Can two people earn any of the bonuses? What class is it if two people operate off existing power and existing antennas? Thanks.
60  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / HF verticals for 80/40 that do not require radials on: January 01, 2010, 06:59:24 AM
I suffered some damage during Hurricane Ike and am just now getting around to replacing some of my hf antennas. I would like to purchase a vertical antenna that works 80 and 40 meters, but since I am on a small city lot here in Houston, I would prefer to use a vertical antenna that does not require radials. Actually, having a vertical that works 80-10 might not be a bad idea, as it could also serve as a backup to the mini-beam (MA5B) I am also thinking of purchasing. I could either roof mount the vertical or ground mount it on the side of or behind the house. I would think that an 80-10 vertical would also give the addition of the 30 meter band which is sometimes the best band for copying dxpeditions in certain areas. So I welcome any suggestions on non-radial vertical antennas. Thanks!
