1  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: MFJ-1026 What am I doing wrong? on: March 17, 2013, 06:51:14 AM
Maybe the tower is picking up the noise.  was tracing some noise the other day at
another hams home and the tower was hearing another noise other than the one we
were trying to find.  Tower equal vertical ant.

Your norm tx/rx ant and the noise rx ant have to hear the noise and the noise ant needs to have a good level of signal from the noise to adjust the gain and phase to cancel the noise.  i would
hook the unit up with the normal connections with the tx/rx and noise rx to the 1026.  first listen to the noise thru the 1026 with the tx/rx ant, then remove the tx/rx and replace it with the rx ant
and see if you hear the same signal.  the way the rx hears the signal will affect the phase and gain of the 1026.  i have use both with good success to cancel rfi.

Time and practice the help.

i had a noise like that one time and it was my computer power supply.  maybe the flex radio computer is the problem.

if not the rfi is coming from a neighbor home from a switching power supply, which inturn
is radiating thru the house wiring for power.

All the plasma tv's that i have seen, including panasonic, samsung, etc here in the usa
make lots of rfi.  just tune your radio and see.

i have seen rfi from plasma tv.  had neighbor 25 feet from house with one.  the dsp or nb will not clear up the rfi as you have.  this in not plasma.  this is some type of arching.

know nothing about growing that stuff.  the rfi is flowing from their home to yours also by the power line from the transformer feed point,  also i have found that the rfi will flow on the ground system as well.  i guess the rfi is both common-mode and differential mode.  if you pursue the rfi issue just give yourself some time to work the problem.  maybe if you talk to the neighbor drop some information about what you think the problem is during the conservation, don't be accusing, but just think out loud while you talk.  i have been there in your shoes where i lived before now.

This may be a grow light for some type of plant that people grow in their homes.

Mike Gruber at the ARRL can offer some suggestions of help, and the ARRL has established
a MOE  memorandum of understanding with the FCC, and Mike will write a letter much like the FCC to the neighbor about the RFI, the FCC will get a copy.  I used this approach twice.

The January 2013 issue of QST has article listed under Hinks and Kints how another ham fixed his RFI from a variable speed motor unit.

11  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: GFI Brakers not GFI Outlets on: November 25, 2012, 06:25:50 AM
having just built a new home in less than two years, there are square d arc fault breakers in the panel.  i have not removed one yet, for the part number, but running about 1kw no problems so far.  maybe the distance to the ground is a problem since the breaker has a second ground on the second and third story.  so far no problems with the GFI's at the outlets.

12  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Look at these AC EMI/RFI Filters on: November 18, 2012, 03:16:34 PM
I have the pdf file for the filter that was suggested.  the filter is inside a metal box, with power cord to the wall, and nema plug on the other side.  according to the schematic from the pdf
the filter is brute force and the ground has been wound with an inductor.  i have the AC power
interference handbook by marv loftness.  his book on page 14-15 printed is a schematic of a
brute force common-mode / differential mode choke with common mode choke in safety ground wire.  these filters are sold at different locations.  have not been able to insert the pdf into the message to show the unit that is for sale.  i am suggesting a product that will look professional and be consider safe to place into someone's home to filter rfi.  i suggest that if anyone looks at
this website look at the home automation section for filter ideas and request the pdf for the CF151 to look at.

RE: PowerLine RFI Filter for Samsung Plasma TV

Look like you folks could build a RFI filter for the Samsung Plasma TV.  Lots of RFI into the power lines
In the home then into the triplex to the power grid.  RFI flows on the ground wires as well.  As a
Amateur Radio operator for 40 years I have seen this first hand.  See what your filters will do.

Richard,

The filter that we would recommend is our CF151 (attached).  The unit cost for quantity 1-9 is $ 226.00 FOB our dock.  Delivery is stock to two weeks ARO. We accept American Express, MasterCard, and VISA credit cards.  This quotation is valid for 45 days from today.

14  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Checking a potential new residence for RFI on: November 13, 2012, 06:39:50 AM
having moved from a close pack neighborhood, checking the RFI level at nigh is a good idea, also check the area several nights.  But, I would also look at the power system in the area, how is the triplex that feeds the homes hung from the pole.  is there several houses on the same transformer, is the house you like on the same feed.  is the power underground,  how close are the homes, look for campers, boats, fun carts, etc,  all of these where in my previous neighborhood and caused RFI from 160 to 10 meters, i was not using 6 meters.  the RFI that is generated by these devices is radiated from the power line in the house out to the power transformer / triplex that feeds the home.  my suggestion is to look for a home with some distance
between you and the next home.  put some distance between you and them, like maybe a acre or more.  i had thought that all the RFI problems that i had in the neighborhood had been solved until the night of Tuesday after thanksgiving, when i came home from teaching ham radio class, i sat down to listen to the 75 meter nets, when i heard the worst RFI not only on 75 but 160 40 30 15 12 10 meters.  i was floored.  i when out side with my handheld SW receiver and found it coming from the neighbor next door, only 25 feet away.  it was a Samsung 50 inch plasma TV.
just because the neighbor is quite when you buy, you never know what the next person is going to buy on black Friday. i was building a house on 5 acres so i had to put up the TV for 4 months.  my suggestion to you is look real hard, buy some land with space to separate out.

Study this company with their filters.  Even filters with power cords and plugs.
