1  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Kenwood TS-440SAT w/ Signalink USB on: April 09, 2013, 06:14:24 PM
I only use two audio lines from my computer to my TS-440 phone patch input and output.  I have a 1:1 balun in each line.  I did wire up the 13 pin din just for PTT but I have found that using VOX works well and really simplifies the set up.  There is also an issue with the audio out on the 13 pin din.  I can't place it right off the top of my head but if you google it, I am sure you will find it.  Hope this helps a little.  73s
2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Modify a 6BTV ? on: March 08, 2013, 06:38:06 PM
You might try what others have done (And I plan on doing this spring).  Build a 40 meter trap to replace the resonator and then add about 25 or so feet of wire and use it like an inverted L.  I plan on doing that and adding wires for 12 and 17 meters.  If you Google 6BTV Modifications you will find many articles on doing this.  Good luck and 73
3  eHam Forums / QRP / RE: Argonaut 509 filter suggestion on: January 18, 2013, 05:04:04 PM
I used an MFJ filter on mine when I first got it.  Found a 208 at a hamfest and snapped it up.
4  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: PSK on a Kenwood TS-440S on: December 29, 2012, 07:30:14 PM
Yes the AFSK IN and OUT are what you want.  The PTT is on ACC2.  I just use the AFSK in and out and use VOX mode.  Worked many contests and Field day this way with no problems.  Another plus to doing it this way is that you can turn down the volume because the AFSK-out is a steady output. Remember to unplug your microphone if you have one plugged in!  73's
5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Hustler 4BTV Overhaul on: November 10, 2012, 08:45:48 PM
Would have to 2nd the DX Engineering guide.  Put my 6BTV back up and had a hard time tuning some of the bands.  After reading the guide and measuring my traps, 3 of them were off and one by 1/2"!  Once I adjusted them, the antenna tuned right up.  You shouldn't have to take apart the traps but I would measure them just to be sure they are right.  1/4" will swing the trap 500KC in some cases.  Good luck and 73s
6  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: APRSdroid type software for Windows or Linux? on: September 02, 2012, 01:06:13 PM
I have been using YAAC (Yet Another APRS Client).  It is written in Java and is multi-platform.  Even though it says Alpha, I have not found any issues with it.  It is in very active development.  I use it under Linux so I can't say how it runs under windows.  Worth a look.  73's, Jeff

Hey there,

Have you checked out this article? http://www.eham.net/articles/7305 It might give you a few more options.  Good luck with your hunt.  73s
8  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Logging programs for Linux? on: July 13, 2012, 04:24:42 PM
For general logging I use Xlog.  For contesting I use YFKtest, TLF, or jlog depending on which contest it is.  I have used CQRlog but I have just not gotten the hang of it.   There is also twlog for general logging.  73s
9  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: PVC Center Insulator on: March 17, 2011, 10:43:26 AM
If it is a coax feed antenna, I usually just use a small section of pipe and wrap the coax around it and then ziptie it together on the bottom and make the connection to the elements.  If it is for ladder line, I drill 6 holes in it and weave the antenna elements through the the outer two and feed the ladder line up through the inner two and make the connection on the top.  I usually paint the pvc before for some U/V protection and just general looks.

Good luck with your antenna project.

Jeff
10  eHam Forums / CW / RE: SKCC WES on: February 16, 2011, 10:58:41 AM
I was testing a radio this weekend and worked a guy who told ME what my SKCC number was! (I forgot I had one HIHI).  Worked a couple more stations using my Lightening bug.

Maybe your virus detection software was not smart enough to tell the difference?  Just saying.  It has happened to me.  One reason I moved away from the Windoze platform.

12  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Laptops for ham radio? on: January 28, 2011, 09:21:22 AM
One thing that I look for and it is getting rare is a serial port.  I do have a netbook with a usb to serial converter that works.  Basically find something that will fit your needs.  I have used everything from a Tandy 100 to a full featured laptop.  Good luck in your search.

13  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: SIMPLE logging software on: January 28, 2011, 09:18:00 AM
Hi,

Why not use just a simple spreadsheet?  You could tailor it for your needs and a simple ctrl F solves your searching needs.  Just a thought.

14  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: Storing cross band splits in memory for Alinco DJ-580 on: January 21, 2011, 01:37:13 PM
I just use mine in VFO mode.  when I want to transmit, I just hit VHF and then jump back to UHF.  I usually use a speaker mic and clip the radio on my clipboard.  It is a bit of multitasking but not hard to learn.

Jeff
